Coaching search update

Butch started his career at UM 30 years ago...

My biggest reason for not having Butch #1 isn't even bc of UNC.

It's because I've watched a ton of sports in my life, I've rooted with tremendous passion and deep following of several teams across major sports.

And never have I seen it work out when you bring back a relic from the past.

Not Cito Gaston, not Joe Gibbs, not Yogi Berra.

Butch Davis began his career here TWENTY years ago. He left here 15 years ago. I dont want a coach on the downside. That's what the Phins got with JJ, what the Cowboys got with Parcells. Get a coach who is trending upward or in his coaching prime.

If they hire Butch this week he could probably win the National Championship this year.

I think the difference with JJ, Parcells, and those guys is they have already won. At a certain point you don't go the extra mile because you have nothing to prove. You also become set in your ways and stubborn. However, Butch has one more shot and everything to prove. We know that Butch should be a championship coach and he wants to be remembered that way. This is it for him and he's hungry to complete his legacy. I think that's what makes Butch different than those guys.

Butch took the Browns to the playoffs, took us to an 11-1 record with a sugar bowl win, and had winning seasons with UNC.

--3 Big EAST Champions
--5-2 in bowl games
--Left Coker with a stacked squad for years, and made him look like a good coach.
--Put together a monster coaching staff with us at Miami.

The man can coach, and I don't see the reason to be so bashful towards him or people that want him as a HC. He has the resume, and wants to be here. Will I be happy if we get Chip Kelly? Yes. I am a Hurricane fan like I believe most of us in this board are as well. I don't root for a HC, but we need a for sure thing here.. I don't want to keep fcking losing, and Butch is the most for sure pick I am aware of who wants to be here.

The Alternatives? J.Fuente, Hue Jackson, Tom Herman, and B.Davis. Those are the guys that have shown interest, or have been rumored to be potential candidates who are actually good candidates.

How I see it. Butch Davis= Winning seasons + developing and producing NFL ready players. Why? because he has done it on a consistent basis.

C.Kelly = Winning seasons + the best offense in the NCAA. This is a long-shot, and I don't see it as a realistic option until he gets fired.. That and USC gets a coach first as well. Kelly recruited in the West coast, and is comfortable there, so USC would be the team to beat/outbid for his services. IMO unlikely, but if was to happen I would celebrate as if we won the NC bcus we would be a lock 2.

Hue Jackson = Great offense + Experience + Good Recruiter. My 3rd option behind Kelly or Butch.

Tom Herman/ J.Fuente = Good up-and-comers, but again we need someone who has that extended resume. We can't fck this up. If I had 2 pick, it would be tom Herman. I like his aggressive coaching style + I don't trust a man with pillars.

Anyone that thinks butch will work a miracle in year one is insane. He is a good coach but hes never turned a team around in one year.

Look at petrino at loserville. Everyone acted like he was going to kill it and they are struggling.
In general I agree but we have something most teams don't in this situation. A QB and a pretty loaded defense.

Yep Rosier is a ******* BEAST!!!!!

He will play in the NFL you heard it here first.

Name the full roster of NFL players. I mean, if you can make such a bold statement - name them. And if the roster at UNC was NOT full of NFL talent - that would indicate you're FOS. Name them. And then COUNT them.

I can already tell you - you're FOS.

UNC was not exactly a hotbed of hot prospects wanting to go there and play football.

THEN, when a recruit comes on board, his first year, he's a true freshman or if he redshrits, he's a redshirt freshman.

Next year, he's a sophomore. Next year, a junior. It takes THREE years to become a junior.

You're talking about taking a 3-9 team, install a team of NFL players the first year, and then not doing siht with them in year 4 - that takes a ****** to consider such a thing.

But with Butch - IN YEAR FOUR - he went 8-5 with his entire team in turmoil over the NCAA crap, and many of his starters were suspended or had to leave school.

Stupidity is not a virtue.

Well he had 9 players drafted in the 2011 draft(More than any other school in the nation in Butch's last year) 4 offense and 5 on defense.

North Carolina Draft Classes

And I'm sure you'll claim "but half of those players were suspended in 2010". My question to you is: were they still on the team in 09' when they went 8-5 too? I'm sure these players didn't whip into shape and become NFL draft picks because they discovered unfound talent sitting out the year before the draft.

Just admit your boy Davis isn't perfect and move on.

He did that at UNC?!

That sounds more of an endorsement than an indictment.

How many of those drafted players were suspended that year? lulz

Careful. You just made the Butch Cult hit list.

If I'm not #1 on that list I'd better damned well be #2 .

It's an interesting point I hadn't seen before. I'd note that he "left" on different terms than everyone "left" other than JJ. What makes the point so interesting is that JJ came back to a different NFL. And, that would be my biggest concern when Butch is named HC here: will he adjust to how college football has changed in the last half decade? Because it has definitely changed.

"Cmon Lu you're better than this."

Wow my biggest fanboy has turned against me b/c I would rather Chip Kelly, Chuck Pagano, and Tom Herman instead of a 63 year old who has been out of coaching for years.

No one is disrespecting anything. Butch will always be put on a pedestal @ UM and rightfully so. He built the greatest football team in the history of the sport. He gets full credit for that. He is an elite evaluator and developer of talent.

Having said that (for reasons spoken at length), that doesn't mean he should be the next coach @ UM.

One big difference: Butch is hungry to win a NC and make amends for what happened.

JJ had 1 national championship and two super bowl rings, Parcells had won a super bowl ring, same thing with Gibbs.

Actually, every single example you gave includes a championship past, which makes you wonder if they had lost their fire. Not the case with Butch.

Oh, and Parcells took NE to the super bowl and had Dallas return to elite status.

Are you trying to say that he has "the eye of the tiger?" Well then, I guess that settles it...

Butch is more like Mikey Goldmill at this point than Rocky.

A bird in the hand........

I think we are all quite certain as to what we will get with Butch.
-huge initial buzz about the team
-an absolute monster recruiting
-a strong/deep coaching staff
-a team that will be scary defensively once again
-someone with a strong bond to the Fanbase and local community

These are all givens and while he may have a few warts, Butch will most definitely put this team back on track for an annual playoff run. I'm good with that.
