Butch had NFL studs like Hakeem Nicks

No, Butch had like 4 nfl skill players and some OL. Not a bunch. I'm not saying Butch killed it on offense at UNC, that was part of what I wrote, but he was at UNC. Even Mack Brown, when he was winning 10 and 11 games at Carolina had an average offense.

Larry Fedora's had some pretty good offenses at UNC.

What is DMoney's connection with Strong? Seems to be overly biased in favor of a guy who is failing worse than any coach I can remember recently.

Bring in Sonny Cumbie who is the co-offensive coordinator and QB coach at TCU. Meecham calls the plays so Sonny would get a shot at that and he would install an air raid offense which would kill it here at Miami. He is young at 34 so he has some more years before he gets a HC gig. He also worked under Leach, Tuberville, Kingsburry and Gary Patterson. Look at what he did with Boykin who was a wide receiver going into college. Here are the stats incase you don't want to look them up.

Would prefer Meacham. If it's true that we're willing to spend up to $4 for a HC and we pay Butch Golden's salary, then I would be fine with giving Meacham a raise to be a solo OC and associate HC at Miami.

Sorry...but I don't see it with Strong at all.

Even in his best season at Louisville he managed to lose games he shouldn't have lost...like Syracuse. Mind you that was WITH an NFL quarterback and the benefit of playing an ACC schedule.

I'm firmly in the camp that Strong is one of the most overrated coaches in college football. The Texas job offers every resource under the sun....nobody is expecting him to win a title or even be in a BCS bowl right away...but he's already losing games he has no business losing.

In my humble opinion...Strong is a disaster hire. We'd be looking for another coach in 3-4 years. Too many warning signs there for my liking.

Yeah me too but I don't think we winning a bidding war with TCU over him.

I have said it before but the time to hire Butch was in 2007. You could have let him do his acquire talent thing for 4 years and then he would have had us pumping out first rounders again.

But I'm not really interested in waiting 4 years. Butch is not a guy that will come in and have us winning quickly. It will be slow. It will be frustrating. And frankly, pumping out NFL players guarantees you nothing in todays game. When Butch was doing his thing he was WAY AHEAD of everyone in terms of S and C development. That was a huge part of what he did, bc he basically approached it like the NFL.

I think Butch being available is AMAZING b/c it's a safety net. But I would hire Herman, Pagano, and obviously Chip Kelly ahead of Butch right now.

The teams he inherited here at miami and UNC had no talent,it's why it took him a while to get it going. At miami there's good talent already on the team and one of the best QBs in all of college football. He just needs to fill the weak spots and that can be done in a year or 2 tops.Unlike Golden Butch was able to land top JC guys who helped rifht away.

And some epically bad defenses, like, giving up close to 40 points per game, bad.

Meachem is on Tulane's short list for HC once they fire Curtis Johnson. I don't think he's staying at TCU.

Assuming pagano and Kelly will be NFL coaches a year from now (not a controversial assumption), is Herman the only guy you have above Butch?

DMoney, what are your thoughts on Skrong? It seems to me that he benefited from having Bridgewater bail him out as a coach. I'm not so sure he's good HC material. Seems to be a better DC than HC.

I've discussed this in other posts, but I think he'd kill it here. He is an elite evaluator of talent (like Butch) who put 14 guys in the pros the last two years at Louisville. Most of those guys were three stars or worse. Recruiting ability may be overrated for a head coach, but the ability to evaluate is just as important as Xs and Os.

He already knows the area and does not need to start fresh in terms of relationships. He built elite defenses at South Carolina, Florida and Louisville, so I believe he can do the same here with our talented roster. He would inherit a Bridgewater-type quarterback in Kaaya. The Iowa State loss is concerning, but Butch had plenty of bad losses here (including a meltdown against East Carolina in Year 5 with a loaded roster).

He is my third choice behind Butch and Herman.

Butch was 1-5 versus Florida state.. that is something that sticks out to me.

How old are you? Were you even watching the games back then?

Serious question. Because your comments seem to indicate that you are purely going off of hearsay.

Yes probably. I like Fuente a lot as well, but I wouldn't necessarily choose him over Butch.

I would be absolutely distraught if we hired Chud, Mario, or a college coordinator.

What was Cokers record against FSU with Butch's players. Even beat them twice 1 year.Butch was about to turn all that around, record against VT too.

Spot on! Gonna be so funny when Butch actually has to COACH a game here. Peoples heads are gonna pop when they actually see the product he throws out there week in, week out. 90% of these board posters couldn't have been around the last time he was here....no way. He isn't that great of a coach. Elite talent evaluator/developer CHECK, however, like you said that isn't going to get us on the map like....now. People getting all hot and gooey thinking he's gonna re-create the greatest college football roster ever assembled are living in a ******* fantasy land.

As you said, I wouldn't be totally upset with a Butch hiring but give me your list all day of the week.

How does this stick out to you?

Finish in the AP top 20 5 out of 6 years
4 and 0 in Bowl Games

He did that with significant scholarship reductions

I doubt people's heads here are going to pop considering the last 3 coaches we've had and the team's they've fielded.

Odin...I hear ya. It's just peoples expectations on what Butch is gonna do are completely out of wack with reality...imo. This can be a quick turnaround with the right hire but I predict people will be turning on Butch by year three because he just doesn't really produce a great on field product on a consistent basis.

Spoke to someone with direct link to decisionmakers. Butch has strong support with key members of Board. There are still some people against him, but the tide is turning. I become more optimistic by the day.

Money will not be an issue. The school knows how important this decision is. I expect Blake to be given the opportunity to conduct a true search and come up with the best candidate. This will not be a lazy process.

It's extremely early, but the two names with momentum are Butch Davis and Charlie Strong. And the obvious choice for offensive coordinator (in my opinion- not info) would be Ken Dorsey, QB coach for MVP candidate Cam Newton.

146 effen up votes...oh yeah.

I remember a lot of head scratching losses under Butch, but what I remember most was an 11-1 2000 team that would have won a national title, had we not been hosed. What is important is Butch getting the right coordinators - the man knows how to run a program and find and develop talent
