Sources: Miami Confident Strong Will Listen
University of Texas head coach Charlie Strong is a candidate for the vacant University of Miami job that should be taken seriously, according to sources.

Miami will reach out to Strong’s representatives following the season and UM’s belief in their ability to get a serious look from the Texas head coach has strengthened following their 24-0 loss to Iowa State on Saturday.
Strong is struggling in his second season at Texas with the Longhorns sitting at 3-5 with four games remaining on the schedule. Texas has remaining games against Kansas, West Virginia, Texas Tech, and Baylor.
There are certainly hurdles when it comes to luring Strong from Texas, most of which are financially driven. Strong is being paid $5 million per year at Texas and he surprisingly does not have a buyout clause in his contract. He would have to pay the remainder of any assistant coach’s salary for that season if he took one from another school.
As InsideTheU.com discussed in yesterday’s Coaching Search Insider, Strong’s contract at Texas is unique and it would help Miami’s case in being able to make the move possible. As we wrote yesterday: “Strong is in his second year of a five-year deal. If he were to quit, he would still receive $15.9 million still owed to him on his current deal. However, if he were to take another job, Texas would receive 50 percent of the new contract at the new school, which would be deducted from the $15.9 million. For example, if he signed a five-year deal with Miami for $3 million a year, he would make $6.8 million annually for the first three years. If he were to be fired from Texas, he would receive all of the $15.9 million except for the sum of the contracts of his current assistant coaches if they remained on the Texas staff.”
InsideTheU.com has confirmed that Miami is willing to go as high as $4 million per year for their next head coach. Those type of numbers have been leaked to catch the eye of established high level coaches, like Strong, to let the coaching community know that Miami, who has a reputation of being cheap, is willing to pay their next head coach.
Strong was making $3.7 million at Louisville.
The decision makers at Miami are intrigued by the possibility of Strong at UM because of his success recruiting the South Florida area and his ability to successfully build and sustain a program. Strong was 23-3 over his last two seasons at Louisville.
While Strong has struggled to find his footing at Texas, posting a 9-12 record at UT, many observers believe to be one of the top coaches in the country. The Texas job has proven to be a huge rebuild for Strong as the cupboard was left bare in terms of talent left on the team from the Mack Brown era and Strong has had to work hard to establish recruiting ties in an area he had never focused on recruiting before. Texas is viewed as a bad fit for Strong.
Momentum is definitely building towards Strong being a realistic candidate for the Miami job when the season is over.
