Chad Thomas Gettin' Big

kept saying that this kid isnt a JACK, he is going to be a straight DE even in our scheme. He will be 255-60 by the time Fall rolls around and will be 280+ by the time he leaves......

No he won't. He'll need to get to 300lbs eventually. 280 isn't enough weight on a 6'5" frame for 3-4 DE.

He's an edge player and if we use him in any other way then we're retarded.

You really want him at 300? I have to disagree

At 6'5" anywhere in the 260's is perfect for him. That's 20 pounds of weight gain. He's gonna lose some baby fat and put on some lean muscle. He'll be 260+ and good-looking, lean and athletic.

How often do 240 high school DE's turn into 290+ (college) 3-4 DE's?

No, I don't. I'm saying if he's gonna play 3-4 DE then he needs to be near 300lbs. At 6'5", 280 isn't heavy enough for 3-4 DE. And that's not even his skill-set.

He could be a legit 1st round talent at 3-4 OLB or 4-3 DE. If developed right he'd leave here at 6'5" 265lbs with speed and quick-twitch.

If we're trying to fatten him up and have him play 3-4 DE then we might as well forget about him contributing for the next 2 years. He's gonna have to redshirt and move in with Jelani Hamilton.

He's not even THAT big. He's in the same range that most highly rated high school DE's are in. Are they all gonna turn into 3-4 DE's too?

If he's 247 that's OK. For 3-4 OLB, don't want him bigger than 265. So long as we keep weight gain in college to another 20 pounds total maximum over his career its alright.

More than that is a problem.

It happened to Chick. He was about 250 at the start and he was 280 last year...they'll prolly get him to 285-290 by August.

Shocked he had even a handful of sacks with all that extra weight on his frame.

He reminds me so much of Justin Tuck.

Tuck fluctuates between 265-270 in the pros and I expect Thomas to end up in that range.

And Chick looks terrible IMO. He's just big and bulky. If developed differently he could've been 255 and ripped and maybe gained some explosiveness. He lacked quick-twitch as it was, now you can forget about it. He's lost any he had.

I watched his high school highlights a few days ago.there is no way he should have packed that weight on, he was an unbelievable athlete. It sad but he could have been great here because he obviously can't play at that weight he is at now.

Reference this pic two years from now because it's gonna be hilarious. After hearing him and Jackson talk about push-ups multiple times as a way they planned to train and get bigger before arriving here, when Tho,as steps into a real weight room, he's gonna explode.

I think he's going to end up looking and playing like JPP by the time he leaves here.

Who's JPP? If he's a pro, I wouldn't know, since I don't follow pro football anymore. I hate the pros.

Names, please, not initials.

Jason Pierre-Paul.

looks like someone shopped Chad's head onto someone else's body.

Lol, his head and neck are 5 shades darker than the rest of his body.

Being in the sun with a t shirt on does that

When I was in HS we never had weight rooms like that. Of course, that was a long time ago. A lot of HS teams didn't even lift back then. There was a belief that was held by a lot in athletics, including a lot of coaches, that lifting too much, getting too bulked up, made you "muscle-bound" and slowed you up. A friend who played on the Canes in the late '60's--and we had some decent teams back then, including one top 10 finish--told me that people only lifted if they wanted to. Nothing mandatory about it, and it was not expected. I don't even know if the U had a strength coach in the '60's.

Some of your posts make me SMH but this is a good comparison that I can totally buy. Chad has special length and quickness and he knows how to put it all together on the field.

His bend and explosiveness are good but they're not elite like DWare in his prime. I prefer the JPP comparison.

Chad is the perfect 4-3 DE. So was Chick. So are a bunch of the players we get. Sure wish staff would design a D around the players we have and get instead of trying to "re-make" them. The NT position is so hard to fill. There are only so many humans with the body need for it and others get them. We got some nice DTs this year, but I am not sure any are the NT needed.

I so miss the days when we took quick high school lbs and move them forward to be fast as **** DE's. Now we bulk up kids for 3 -4 DE's and then asked them to drop in overage. Kind of the opposite of the old Cane way. I will admit, that since we moved to the dolphins house, our whole team plays slower anyway, so maybe we need bigger cows to play in the fin's cow pasture. Losing the fast turf of the OB doomed our old ways. Just sucks.
