He'll do well there relatively speaking, i.e. fixing the colossal f--- up Pete Garcia made when he spearheaded the Ron Turner era.
Butch left here before the job was done, so we assume he would have won the NC in 2001 and probably one or two more before getting a real NFL offer (i.e. ABC, Anywhere But Cleveland). That was our plan anyway, his was different obviously.
All we know of Butch as a HC is that he is an elite evaluator of talent, particularly spotting players that overachieve based on where everyone else has them ranked. Clint Portis is a classic example. Pretty much everyone else had him moving to CB. There are countless others.
His tenure at UNC proved to be similar, though not the same level of elite players; but, he was gone before anyone could see the finished product.
Based on his history, at FIU, I predict similar results. He will identify and recruit players that are being overlooked by the Big 3 in state, or the ones for which there isn't enough room. The problem is this isn't the 1990s, and pretty much every program from big time Power 5 through bottom feeders are doing the same thing, and not just bottom feeding, they're winning some too.
It will be harder this time, but he will still get some kids that overachieve and probably steer a few his way that would escape most of the coaches/recruiters. FIU will improve and make a bowl game or two, but once again, one way or another, he will not be around to show off the finished product.
I predict after an 8-4 type season, he is gone to a Power 5 school before the bowl game. That's Butch.
