Braxton Berrios

I've never seen him show the ability to make people miss, even before his injury. He's almost always being tackled by the first defender.

The thing that bothers me the most about him is that he's a microcosm of the Golden era. This slapd!ck went to Carolina to sign a small slot WR who excelled against so-so competition when he had a plethora of slots in his own backyard who play against the best talent in the country.

South Florida is a breeding ground for slot receivers who can make defenders miss in a phone booth...and if you leave this area to sign a 5'8"-5'10" WR he better be an instant impact player! (not some **** role player)

Thats all we got MAcho...that one play...DOnt take mah dreams mane

What slot WRs in our backyard are you referring to that year and how have they done so far in the slot in college? The only one I can think of from that year was McKenzie and he has pretty much done nothing in the slot so far (good return man however).

Brad Kaaya probably told Al Golden to take Braxton Berrios. They were friends since The Opening.

McKenzie doesn't play in an offense that's primarily spread. If he was here, in the spread, it's an entirely different story.

Regardless, he's already contributed to his team more than Berrios has. (via special teams)

Nope. Berrios was recruited well before Kaaya was on our radar. From what I can recall, I think Berrios' family was originally from FL and moved up to NC, and were always Canes fans. I think he was even vocal before landing a Canes offer that he wanted to play at Miami.

Here's the problem with taking some of these SFL slot WRs...some of them simply want a Miami offer to pimp for an SEC (or F$U,Clemson, tOSU*, Michigan, USC, etc) offer. We had a kid in Berrios that was very talented, and wanted to come to Miami from day one...not just wanting a Miami offer to turn it into an offer for the school they really wanted. What I'm saying is, instead of kids belly-aching about Miami taking a kid like Berrios, follow that kid's lead in recruiting. When you get a Miami offer...don't pimp it around. Commit, and stay committed. If you want to come to Miami, then work hard, get the offer, and commit without wavering like Berrios did.

That goes both ways though, as Macho mentioned. McKenzie wanted to be a Cane from day one, and was local. We never offered. That was a major mistake by the staff...I would have taken both Berrios and McKenzie.

It's an issue for both recruits and coaches here...once the players start taking a Miami offer more seriously and committing on the spot (and STAYING committed), and the coaches quit ignoring local talent taking for granted that they can make last-minute pulls in SFL if they need to...things will get better. But...both sides have changes to make.

I'm curious, to play devil's advocate, what sofla slot guy should we have gotten that would have been a better option than Berrios? McKenzie was mentioned and I a LOT of debate on the board as to whether or not we should have pursued him more..anyone else?

There weren't any. People just complaining because his production has been low (injuries, FSU dropped pass) and he shouldn't have been returning punts over Corn. But he's a playmaker, has swag, and has two more years to do something.

When you look at our receiving core, only Coley, Scott, and Herb produced last season. 2 of them will not be on the team next season. Kaaya's gonna need some guys to step up.

McKenzie is the major one.

I think Hallandale had a kid too but I can't remember the name.

Either way, 5'8"-5'9" kids that can scoot are everywhere down here. You don't travel to Carolina to grab a kid of his stature unless he's special.

No. LOL

For 2014, there weren't any small receivers that have produced at a high level so far at the position.

These were the South Florida receivers under 6 foot Berrios' year.

Mckenzie - 10 for 123 yards receiving all year (49 total yards - If you take away the Southern game)
Jojo Robinson - 6 for 53 yards
Trevon Lee - nothing
Cj Worton - 4 for 69 yards
Berrios - 12 for 86 yards

He was an Under Armour All-American. I would say those are players that are ok to leave state for, even at the WR position. Especially when there wasn't a Sam Bruce or like player out there.

Why did it have to be Berrios or another midget? Why couldn't it have been a full-sized WR?

He's a Junior this year, this should be his breakout year. He would have redshirted if not for depth issues.

berrios had over 200 yds and 3 tds in 2014. the 86 yds were this past season

Exactly.

Suffering Christ! The guy has underperformed the hype and has had an average at best career so far. Would love to see him break out next year. Pulling for him because he's a Cane. That is all.

Go Canes!
