Braxton Berrios

I don't think there would've ever been as much hype surrounding him if people weren't always trying to find the next Steve Largent which the modern day equivalent is Wes Welker. Decent enough receiver, but he's got a looking way to go before he's someone you can rely upon consistently.

I think Bruce, if he gets the plays down will eat up a lot of his snaps.

No. People are looking for our players to do better on the field and match their potential. This has nothing to do with race.

Whether people say it does or doesn't, not even his high school highlights justified the hype IMHO.

I myself don't care one bit where someone is from or what they look like, I just never understood the hype from day one. Perhaps it was his brash attitude and like the OP said, it's basically put up or shut up time. I hope he can back up the talk, I'm sure we all hope for that.

His hype came from his sparq score not that he was white. I believe he had the best short shuttle of any recruit in the country. You show those kind of quicks and there will be hype.

The hype on Berrios really has to do with this board. People saw his Sparq score, saw him catching a TD in the All American game, and people on this board started getting hyped up. And yes the fact that he's white gave him an extra bump in his hype.

But Nationally he was ranked correctly - ESPN had him as the #43 WR in 2014, and 247 had him #52 . People here were just expecting too much.

I expect him to contribute more now that he's a Junior, and have 1 or 2 big games. But he is what he was supposed to be - a contributor, not a go to guy.

Much truth there...

While I expect there will always be a group of our XBox fans that have never played the game placing ridiculous expectations on testing and all star games, the truth is....this kid came from an area we rarely recruit or recruit very well when we did.

He talked like an old Cane and he stuck by his word and came to his "dream school"...that alone was enough for me to like the kid and hope he did great.

All of these people with the "small white receiver" and "I told you so" crap were probably praying that the kid didn't help ***** up their African American are best narrative. That had nothing to do with it. Kid had the goods, and absent injury and subpar coaching, he might have been more.

He still has a chance, but as you say....he will always be a contributor only, which is what he was supposed to be....

Not sure why it matters that Berrios is white. To be fair, I'm not sure he knows he's white.

I thought he was Cuban....

I think he's Puerto Rican.

Oh ok...so Puerto Ricans are white now?? Just asking...

If healthy I expect him to have a really good jr. Year and a monster Sr. Year. Unfortunately he's been plagued by the injury bug since he got here. But when healthly he's shown flashes.

This, he hasn't been healthy at Miami, when he does I think he'll make an impact at receiver just not at punt or kick returner.. Berrios can get open and quick

I think Berrios is really good. He was coming off an ACL injury and put up good numbers as a true fresh. Last year in the bowl game, he tried to will us to victory on a couple of drives. I think like most players here, their talents have been grossly misused. I think he'll have a very solid year next year. Think he'll be the type of receiver who'll have a long career in the NFL as a 3rd down specialist.

I do think we overhyped him, but I think he's a really, really good receiver.

I don't think Berrios will see the field after this year. With Richts 2017 class and our freshman from this year developing I expect him to get buried in the depth chart. He also cant stay healthy.. unfortunately.

Also there was issues w/ Berrios playing not this past year but in 2014 coming in and playing as a freshman.. Some people felt he was taking snaps from Malcolm Lewis and Herb Waters... I know I did.

His critics act like an ACL is an ankle. I'm not ready to crown the guy, but I think it's only fair to give the jury a little more of the case before judging him.

I've never seen him show the ability to make people miss, even before his injury. He's almost always being tackled by the first defender.

The thing that bothers me the most about him is that he's a microcosm of the Golden era. This slapd!ck went to Carolina to sign a small slot WR who excelled against so-so competition when he had a plethora of slots in his own backyard who play against the best talent in the country.

South Florida is a breeding ground for slot receivers who can make defenders miss in a phone booth...and if you leave this area to sign a 5'8"-5'10" WR he better be an instant impact player! (not some **** role player)

I saw his ability on that last run against WSUbefire the disaster ours interception. I think that he has a chance to have a breakout year.

I was down voted in the Byrd thread for saying that it would be nice if his on field production matched his off field talk.

Am I wrong here? The guy came in with fairly big expectations and had done absolutely nothing other than **** his teammates off with his attitude. He supposedly developed a rapport with Kaaya yet often times when he was in the game Kaaya looked the other way. He also had several keys drops.

I'm not giving up on him yet, but isn't it time for him to put up or shut up?

The fact that you took the time to start a thread on one of our kids with explicit purpose to dump on him shows how
much of a phallus you are.

There's 10 wideouts a year with his ability in the tri-county area.

OK - well, what happens when we get a slot guy like Malcolm Lewis who has been on about the same career trajectory as Berrios? Both have had injury issues, both are slots, are more quick than fast, etc...Lewis is from S. Florida, Berrios is from NC. That's really about the only difference (besides race, which who cares).

I'm just not understanding why we're giving Berrios **** at this stage in the game when he has 2 more seasons to rise up and prove himself, but we're not giving Malcolm Lewis **** for not living up to his expectations. Is it because his ankle got turned sideways a few years ago? Well, Berrios had his leg turned sideways up underneath him last season too. Not as severe as Lewis, but whatever.

I'm just saying if your quoted statement is true, then why aren't people starting threads declaring Malcolm Lewis a bust?

Even white peoples are trying to disown this poor dude now. We got guys in here claiming he ain't white. LOL.

This is the cane fanbase at it's finest over the years.

What we can take from this thread

1.Berrios isn't white

2.Berrios was stealing snaps from Lewis and Waters

3.Berrios is not from the Tri County area so he shouldn't be on this roster.

We should forget the fact that he and every other player was under the tutelage of clowns and Berrios was also dealing with injuries.

I think posters can save the "told you so's" until this next season is over.

Shouldn't have played another snap this year after the injury against Bethune. He came back a few weeks later and was hobbling on routes for a couple of games.

I'm not saying he is some superstar at all but he can be a good player when healthy. He's had the injury bug even since high school.

I never liked the Lewis pick-up. Coached against him in high school and wasn't impressed.

I think Berrios gets **** because of the hype that was behind him. Personally, I'm more annoyed with the fact that we chose to sign him out of Carolina instead of Isaiah McKenzie from our own backyard
