Beckham, Shalala discuss partnering on stadium

“Let’s hope Steve doesn’t make it difficult,” said a high-ranking UM Board of Trustee member. “Our fans don’t like it up there; they want to be down south. That’s where our base is. You have politicians involved from the city and county, so this is difficult. But MLS needs us for the political side of getting this done. We don’t want to be a renter. We want to be a partner in the project.”

Very interesting that UM is speaking these things to the media. Putting more pressure on the Dolphins? More smoke?

While I agree that Ross should compromise on an out, how about our Board be the ones to not make it freakin' difficult? $4 mil a year should be an afterthought to this whole process. Jesu Christo, freakin' Stu Miller clears that on a couple of new home builds with Lennar. Just shut up and either get this done or say declaratively that we ain't ever leaving SLS and get back to touting the renovation out of the other side of your collective mouths.

Patience my friend, these things take time. I hope Miami is serious about this. The program needs this desperately.

really bad time to do this.. at least stay through 2016 and see what Sun Life is like as a completely different stadium.. with a roof. 40k would be an embarrassment and the stadium would be a soccer field first with football as second.... with seats far away from the field. terrible timing.

You do realize the OB hosted Soccer games, right? A stadium can be built to cater to both.

What other time would there be? It's either do it now in partnership with Beckham or wait for another decade or so for the next opportunity? A 40K stadium for smaller games would be just fine, and would provide a much closer, louder, more raucous college football atmosphere than the mausoleum in which we currently play. Renovations to Sun Life are nice, but they don't move the stadium any closer to the actual location of the university and the majority of the fan base. We can use Sun Life for the big games.

You are breaking character, you are supposed to be on board with all the "benefits" that were "masterfully negotiated" by Shalala to lock us in for 30 years, and don't forget the 400 million dollars the school has spent on its renovation.

..and you are acting like a child. There is no character to break. I've always been on board with getting a better stadium. Also a realist in that as long as we are stuck at Sun Life, the better it can be made, the better for us.

So Beckham wants a partnership for the BCs and Dukes but not FSU/Nebraska?? Im sure that would change things at the negotiating table and of course would mean that there would be cost to Ross continuing.

All I am saying is that a schtick account doesn't work if you don't remain committed to it.

Well, you and your idiotic ilk can keep your delusions of tin foil hat conspiracies if that makes you feel better. But that plays better over on the sites about 9/11 conspiracies, fake moon landings, and chemtrails better than it does here. How about you grow up and discuss football?

We would be partners in the Beckham stadium deal, not just renters. Who knows how the negotiations would ultimately play out, but the idea of using the larger venue for the "big" games is certainly reasonable, and if anything would make it EASIER to get out of the current lease terms we have on Sun Life.

But since we wouldn't be renting Beckham's MLS stadium, we would be partners in the stadium, including the design and function of it, expecting it to be just like every other MLS stadium doesn't make sense.

I doubt this happens. Miami wants to collect all the revenues from alcohol and food sales, apparel, parking, etc.
