Barry J. article summary on "behind the scenes" problems.

Honestly Weed (especially high CBD) needs to be completely legalized and completely taken out of the rules regarding drugs and suspensions. Then actual drugs need to be punished harder imo.

There's miles of difference between Weed and Coke...and Coke would also be one of the more mild drugs they could possibly be getting their hands on....

I agree. The difference between the 2 and the short-term effects are incredibly different. Some compounds of weed can be beneficial but this false narrative of all the health benefits needs to stop because many are without any proof and just a push to cash in on the "next big thing".

There are many hurdles though. Unlike alcohol, which is kind of grandfathered in and accepted (like tobacco), weed is harder to test for. When someone is drunk and driving, you have a test to immediately prove it. Someone comes to work drunk, you can smell it and test for it. They can be removed from a car or job immediately before putting others at risk and punished accordingly. Weed can be tested for but it shows in your system for extended periods of time, just as the odor stays in your clothes. But it does inhibit motor skills and you shouldn't be driving or operating equipment while high. How do you manage this? There's also medical literature that links smoking weed at a young age to increased mental illness. So while weed can be beneficial for some medical conditions, it's not without risk.....and that's why some feel it should be regulated like other prescription medications to ensure it's not being overused or abused.

I completely disagree with this statement. Most kids do not smoke weed.....not where i'm from. Do some? Absolutely. Most? Absolutely not.

Excessive use of weed can lead people to not being prepared or focus. That's how the drug operates. It's no different than alcohol, which many can use responsibly but those who drink daily have issues.

Lets agree to disagree?

Most kids today smoke weed, that is not the main issue. Not being prepared, focused, hungry etc. is the issue. And yes part of that is on the kids, but the larger part is the poor discipline.
Smoking weed will definitely make players hungry (literally) but it will definitely reduce preparedness and focus. Dudes need to lay off the weed.

so you guys always say well miami has more to do the nightlife etc as a reason why players should come here but then get mad when they actually nejoy the nightlife lol?

Weak coaches allow these things to happen. Being buddy buddy and friendly is more important to them.

Also nice hit job by the unnamed sources and former bum player. Put your name to it sucker so we can know u speaks facts.

This in no way makes me think more of the staff. It makes me think less.
Agreed. This isnt even a hard fix. You punish the entire team or entire unit for the action of those singular individuals. His teammates will get his **** together for him real quick!!!!

Pilots can't drink 12 hours before flying. Maybe have a similar rule for players?

And they do not play. My uncle is a pilot and was at the hotel bar the night before flying. The airline had undercover people there and saw him and 2 or 3 other pilots, they immediately suspended them and forced them into rehab. Their union had to get involved and they had to have a hearing on whether they would be fired. He has been flying over 40 years, this never happened before and he wasn't drunk. Thankfully he kept his job by the skin of his teeth.

TVD's opportunity here is HUGE! He doesn't need to be a world-beater from day 1. He needs to show real leadership traits early and win over current players who see he cares enough to stay late in film study or organize extra work with WR's that doesn't involve bong hits & Madden afterward. There aren't any "Big Shoes" to fill. He can grab this opportunity and make the Canes "His" team. It will show he's much more than a kid with an arm if he succeeds. Time will tell.

Go Canes!

It absolutely is a huge opportunity for him this spring. Hope he takes advantage of it

Remember this??:

“The Miami Hurricanes suspended junior receiver Jeff Thomas for their 28-21 overtime loss to Georgia Tech on Saturday due to a violation of team rules, UM announced before the game.”

Dumb *** gets a chance at redemption and goes and smokes weed and gets suspended for the game.

What an idiot and cancer. No wonder he was nearly useless in 2019....

Maybe if he wasn’t such a stoner he wouldn’t have MUFFED the punt return that gave UF 7 points....

But conversations with multiple people around the program, including a veteran player, say there’s another issue, particularly in the quarterback room, that must be fixed. And UM is working to achieve that.

That player - and other sources around the team - say a few players seem more concerned with partying than focusing on football and that a handful (including a prominent one on offense) broke curfew the night before the FIU loss to go out.

It didn’t help that players are aware that UM’s drug policy does not call for a suspension for a first failed drug test; that policy was taken advantage of, according to numerous sources.

All of that had one regular on the team hoping Diaz becomes more of a disciplinarian next season. Diaz apparently realizes this.

We’re told Diaz reminded players before the Independence Bowl that breaking curfew, drinking and smoking weed would not be permitted.

A source said Diaz has discussed implementing a three-strike system in which the first failed test is a one-game suspension, a second failed test is a multi-game suspension and a drug education course; and a third failed test results in dismissal. It’s unclear if that system will be implemented.

Under UM’s current drug policy, the penalty for a first offense on a failed drug test is 10 hours of community service. The punishment for a second offense is players are withheld from 10 percent of their season’s competition (one game for football) and a third suspension requires missing 30 percent of the season’s games (three or four for football).

“The University of Miami has one of the strongest institutional drug testing policies in all of college athletics,” the UM athletic department told The Miami Herald in response to an inquiry last week. “Testing is outsourced to, and conducted entirely by, an independent entity that has no other affiliation with Miami Athletics.

“Any football student-athletes who violated the institutional drug policy this past season were penalized in accordance with the institutional policy. Any University of Miami coach has the authority to strengthen the drug testing policy for his or her respective sport.”

As I've said before, coming from the perspective of one who spent 4 years in a QB room in college: The problem with UM, is that the jersey numbers on the top three QB's have a direct correlation to their IQ's.

Really disgraceful. Sure, say what you want, this isn't the Yale QB room, and Manny is not Coach Carm Cozza, but if I'm Steve Walsh, Ken Dorsey, or Bernie Kosar, or any one of the truly dedicated and great 'Canes QB's over the years, I'm reading that article, El, and probably feel like I want to drive down to the Hecht and kick someone in the nuts.
