Assuming the offense is fixed.. what about the D?

I don't know what it is, but our defense plays slow and is not very good at tackling. I dont know if that falls specifically coaching or recruiting or both.
Also any many misdirection play the opponent does results in a big game.
I will take a top 10 D for the last 4 years any day, even if they play "slow" by your definitions.

It was just one bad call. Holy **** you guys take one bad play call and want a **** coach fired for it. The defense was the only reason we were in that North Carolina game to begin with. Same with the UF Game.
Wasn’t even a bad call..Bandy just got lost in coverage

Yes you can, it was flawed in critical moments when the team needed the defense the most while being handed a lead with an anemic offense late in the game yet allowing opposing offenses to do whatever they wanted in the 4th quarter
Yeah..va tech and UNC..other than that tho Defense was far far from a problem..by no means was the defense Great but it was in the top 20 in the nation in pivotal categories..3rd down D, we need to recruit more man v man cover corners

I dont just look at stats, I compare how other top teams perform and look vs how UM defense plays. You must not have watched many bowl games over this last few weeks because if you did you wouldn't have spewed the same this bs. Go look at that Baylor vs UGA game or Wisonsin vs Oregon, compared to their defense UM looks soft and plays fast as ****. It is night and day how theybolay vs how UM plays.

Still a glaring coaching deficiency on defensive side of the ball. No changes?

King & Co aren't much good to us on the bench. (see 3rd down D)

Frasier Crane - I'm listening.

The offensive is not fixed until the oline toughens up and can block instead of being soft *** babies. Once the oline is right the offense will be efficient

Is that not a valid criticism? If you play crappy teams to inflate your stats why shouldn’t that be pointed out?

This is where stats don’t tell the entire story. When a play is needed to be made this defense has failed to step up.

so you are saying the defense is responsible for scheduling crappy teams? Argue the inflated stats all you want but that is missing the point. You can’t criticize a defense for something they can’t control. Criticize them for the stuff they can.

Hopefully we will finally scheme around our weakness instead of just beating our heads against the wall.

The scheme is trash unfortunately it’s nothing we can do about it until Diaz gets fired.

What scheme would you prefer? (legit asking). Manny has put up top S&P+ top 20 defenses every year. Weak schedule or not thats pretty **** good... In college football these days, no defense is stopping the Bama's, LSU's, OU's of the world. It's an offensive game. Disruptive D's that create turnovers and sacks while limiting big plays is about as good as it gets

One reason i did like Manny as DC was the D always made good adjustments at half and D was rarely the reason we lost in 2nd half (under Richt). Do feel we lost a step here with Baker and hate some of his 3 man rush calls

The criticism is that every time it mattered, they got exposed.. nobody said the defense wasn’t solid (or even good), they just weren’t dominant.

If somebody hasn't put up already, You know what they say about *** U ME. Third offense install and play-caller in 3 years, Still no settled QB, and O-line woes.

we scored 0 points against La Tech. We could have held them to a field goal and still lost. How do you blame the defense for that?

How long could the defense hold off a highschool team? Look at the star ratings of these players. The fact they allowed multiple scores, let alone one, is an indictment. I don’t care how bad the offense is performing. If your team is pitted against pop warner, the other team will not score.

I would agree we did not have a dominant defense, but we had a good enough defense to win most our games if we had better offensive play and special teams. Of course there's room for improvement but no one is arguing our defense was perfect.

The mere mention of La Tech to indict our defense shows how asinine the criticisms are. Get this. Even if we had held them SCORELESS we still did not have points to win the game.

We are definitely not out coached most games on defense. Our defense is the only reason we didn't go 3-9 last year

We have been giving teams more offensive snaps by going 3 and out on all of these drives the majority of times in games.

This may be true but the defense still sucked last season. They tackled poorly and generally looked unprepared, especially after byes.

LMAO. The defense gave up 17(?) points to UNC in the first quarter - before the Cheerleaders could even warm up. Stop it.

And complimenting those snaps by not getting off the field on 3rd down AND 4th down on defense.

The same people who are confident about the defense now - probably thought our defense was good heading into the Clemson ACC Ship. Smoke and Mirrors.

Clemson’s AWFUL running QB proceeded to complete his first 17(?) passes. Just ridiculous.

People! We gave up 30 points to FIU!!!! Even FAU didn’t do that. Our defense has been smoke and mirrors all too often. We need a real LB coach, Safeties coach, and an elite CB coach.

In general, as I have said in many many threads-

Statistically, our defense has been consistent and borderline elite for three years, regardless of the spin cycle posted on how many points given up against teams. That is just facts.

Things to support this-

1. JW high as a kite throwing short field int's that lead to scores
2. Total inability to score points really puts extra pressure on D. TOP for us was hugely lopsided and that puts added pressure on our defense.

Anyone who ever played this ******* sport at ANY level can tell you its a lot easier to play lights out defense when you are up by 21 points instead of down by 17 on a short field. This defensive talk about them needing to step up is absurd. The sky is not falling on defense.

The only changes on defense is we need our DTs to penetrate like Willis, Norton and Mac did. Our tackles need to use their hands more. Everything starts up front. Good DTs takes pressure off our young LBs and also helps our DBs.

THE.

*******.

END.
