Assuming the offense is fixed.. what about the D?

No one in the right mind can have much to complain about with our D . For a down year in the secondary we were still a top 15 D . We will tweek this or that but why fix was hasn't been broken in years.

Our D had 1 problem - our O was horrible. At some point your D can only do so much without backup .

The is the type of stuff you ask when you need to create some drama . It doesn't actually need to be asked.

What did you expect there are no reeds, vilmas,Morgan's etc on the defensive side.that means we don't have those kind of players right now.until the current players develop into that kind of player your just gonna have to accept it that the defense isn't great but it isn't bad either.by the way until that oline is fixed the offense isn't fixed.doesn't matter who's in backfield unless it's superman and flash.

Not drama as much as a slow day at the office. I digress though. There are those who can see the glaring weaknesses on the defensive side of the ball & those who can't. Nothing we discuss will change a thing. Good day.

How many teams have a really strong sos anymore? Last year Canes were 62nd. Right about the middle of the power 5 teams. No our defense was not great. Not as bad as some try to insinuate though.

I'm speaking about coaching, not talent. No big deal though.

I'm saying you have to consider all factors when looking at the bigger picture. (UCF would lose 3+ games in the SEC. Miami wouldn't be Top 15 with a tougher schedule, etc).

Ok. If you want to consider all factors should you also include the offense being dead last in 3rd down conversion rate? How would that impact a defense having to be on the field for extended periods because the offense can't sustain drives?

I am not making a case the defense was this juggernaut. We had breakdowns and gashes. 4th and 17 was a bummer. But so were missed field goals and the offense stalling, etc.

Offense and defense don't play in a vacuum. They play off each other and if your offense sucks it does impact your defensive performance (sudden changes due to t.o., playing short field, coming in after consecutive 3 and outs, etc.). You have to take that under consideration too.

Good post & I concede all of that (and have considered it). Just from the naked eye, I still have worries over our game planning, in-game adjustments, fundamentals (see: tackling) & predictability. Not claiming to be right, just discussing.

We still have glaring issues at CB & LB.

Hopefully we can get Meiko Dotson to help sure up the CB spot otherwise, we better hope Christian Williams or Te'Cory Couch step up & take over the CB2 spot, because if Ivey remains the starter our secondary will struggle. He's a huge liability in coverage.

The one thing I don't like about our Defensive coaching staff is they play favorites & are too political with playing time. We need to have the best 11 on the field, not their favorite guys or the best *** kissers in practice, the absolute best 11. Don't keep playing dudes who routinely get beat, miss assignments & play like shìt just because they remind you of you or you like them a lot. If another CB is better than Ivey, play them & sit his *** on the bench.

At LB we'll be more athletic but green, I expect Brooks & Huff to do well, but Huff was a late enrollee & has never gone through a full Spring/Summer/Fall camp, he may take some time to get acclimated.

I'm super super high on Tirek Austin-Cave, I'm glad he's an EE & will get very good 2nd team reps, he'll definitely be in the rotation a lot.

At Safety, Hall & Bolden are the guys, if it were up to me I'd move Amari Carter to Striker/LB but as of now he's still a S. Keontra Smith is a sleeper for the 3rd rotational Nickel Safety, he reminds me of Jaquan without the ball skills, I think he'll play a lot this year. Jalen Harrell I think we be good too, sucks he wasn't an EE though. Balom & Washington will be ST's/redshirt guys.

The DL is the strength of the team with landing Roche, pairing him with Roussea we have the best Defensive Line in the ACC outside of Clemson & one of the top 5 in the nation. Crazy depth at DE & DT, even if one of them transfers we good.

Overall I think the Defense will be faster & more athletic than in the past few seasons, we'll have a good mix of young guys & a couple upperclassmen. The key will be for Diaz & Baker to stop being so over complicated & just let the athletes do what they do best, don't bog them down with overly exotic unnecessary schemes, just attack the pocket & let them boys hunt, have the CB's keep everything in front of them & let Hall roam manning the deep centerfield.

The gameplan we ran with vs FSU should be style we play for every game, keep it simple & attack.

I know but still to have a decent defense with no stars tells a lot about the coaching.
No stars is a bit of a stretch.. We have highly rated guys littered throughout the 2-deep. 3 highly ranked LB's who had played 40+ games together, lots of talent on the DL (even secondary). Just lacked experience and some depth. Still, a solid effort.

I am wondering who the new leader/heart on the D will be, between Shaq, Bandy, Jaquan, the last few years we haven'd had to worry about that but looking at the roster I am unsure who steps up. Maybe Brooks but he is young, McCloud is the vet, I am going to throw Blades in just because of his lineage, Nesta I think is a guy other guys follow but is also the guy that is going to likely get tossed for whatever reason lol
