CaneHunt '14: TIGHT ENDS (TE) BOARD

Miami’s Need: 3

Miami currently has six (6) tight ends on the roster, including Beau Sandland and Standish Dobard. Three of them will be seniors (Cleveland, Dye, Perry) this season, meaning the Canes will be looking to bring as many as three new TEs in this upcoming class.

However, we must get him to campus quickly if we are to stand a chance of landing this elite TE. Most experts feel he will stay out west. USC and UCLA are already making their moves. Great challenge for Coach Carroll.

UPDATES:

3/29/13: Yesterday, CaneInsider reported...

“There was speculation that he [McDermott] may not have committed, but CaneInsider.com confirmed through other highly credible sources that he is in fact a Cane although he might make it ‘official’ Tuesday at the press conference.”

CaneInsider did not reveal their source.

3/29/13: Bruce Feldman, of CBS Sports.com, today posted an article entitled “For blue-chip OT's family, recruiting's been crazy since '05.”

“In 2005, an undersized offensive line recruit from Florida was scrapping so hard to get noticed by the Ole Miss staff at the Rebels summer camp that he literally finished his 40-yard dash in a tumbling heap, scratching up his knees and palms. Tyler McDermott was about three inches under and at least 20 pounds lighter than what college coaches want in an O-line prospect, but the kid sure wasn't going to come up short in grit or tenacity. From the sidelines, McDermott's dad Randy, a former baseball player at Ohio University, nervously observed, same as many other parents did that morning. I was in the Ole Miss indoor facility working on my book Meat Market, which chronicled the recruitment of several prospects that Ole Miss was chasing, including Tyler McDermott.”

3/29/13: Corey Dowlar, of espn.com, reported yesterday…

“The rumors circulating Thursday morning that K.C. McDermott (Wellington, Fla./Palm Beach Central) had committed to Miami proved to be inaccurate. Well, at least for now.

The 6-foot-6, 300-pound Watch List offensive tackle, who is down to Notre Dame and Miami as finalists, remains undeclared for now.

"The official announcement will be on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the media center," said McDermott's head coach Rod Harris.

McDermott has been one of the most sought-after prospects in the state of Florida. His offer list includes Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, USF, Virginia Tech, and Wisconsin, among others.

The Hurricanes and Irish remain the two favorites for Tuesday's announcement.”

3/25/13: 247Sports/ITU is reporting that OT Kc McDermott will make his decision within the next few weeks between Miami and Notre Dame. Kc has brothers at both schools. He plans to visit both schools during his spring break this week.

3/22/13: ESPN.com Recruiting Nation has published an article, “Breaking down 2014 prospects.” Their report includes OT Kc McDermott. Here’s what they had to say…

“McDermott is the third in a line of some good O-line prospects from his family in recent years, and the 2014 edition is the biggest and arguably the most promising of the group. His brothers were interior guys, but K.C. should find a home at tackle with very good height and a solid build, with more room to add some needed good mass with time in a college weight program.”

Tex :cigar:

2/21/13: Kc McDemott is a stud OT from South Florida. Kc is the Canes’ number one target on OT board this year. His brother Shane is the current starting center for Miami. Kc is the #3 OT in the country with a 98 rating, according to the 247Sport Composite. He’s already garnered 15 offers from most of the major colleges programs.

To say he’s been well indoctrinated to the Miami program would be an understatement. He’s been on campus at least a dozen times. Some experts feel McDermott is the best right tackle in this recruiting cycle. He explodes off the ball with a fierce punch and can get to second level blocks easily.

Miami is in an excellent position with Kc McDermott. At this time, our primary competition appears to be Notre Dame, with Alabama, Florida and Ohio State in the mix.

Cory has good body mass already. He’s very athletic and flexible for a young man his size and possesses excellent footwork. While his arm length will keep him at guard at the college level, he has a very good understanding of the game and his position. He may even play center in the future. The Canes really like Martinez and will push hard to land him. He has no favorites at this time. It appears our competition will come from Notre Dame, FSU, UF and USF. It’s a long way to NSD.

It would be a very tough pull for Miami. Time to move on?

4/28/13: ESPN filed a report on DT prospect Quentin Nelson at the NY NFTC…

“Four-star offensive guard Quenton Nelson (Red Bank, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) is one of the nicest players off the field, but there is a nastiness about his game when he is on it. The offensive line MVP played through the echoes of the whistle, and he wasn’t afraid to mix it up a little when the one-on-one battles got a little heated. Still, Nelson was quick to help opposing linemen up -- after punishing them to the turf to begin with.”

2/26/13: Quenton Nelson is a quality guard prospect from New Jersey, with a rating of 89 and ranked the #15 OG in the nation, according to the 247Sports Composite.

Ohio State has the early lead for Nelson. However, Queston is taking a systematic approach to his recruiting. With 24 offers already, Quenton is planning to narrow down his list this spring and take unofficial visits this summer to Stanford, Northwestern, Notre Dame, North Carolina, Duke and probably Miami. The Cane must get him to campus to stand a chance of signing him. Coach Golden and his staff have excellent connection in New Jersey and want to keep our pipeline open this year. UPDATES:

5/1/13: 247Sports tonight published an article on Khairi Clark. Clark named his top 2 schools, at this time. Our Hurricanes share the top spot with our hated rivals, the gators of Florida. Which program has the upper hand?

“Honestly, I can't even say, because I'm really liking Florida a lot. You can put them both at the top because I really had a great experience when I went up to Florida. It was nothing like I thought it would be. It was awesome.”

However, Miami is far from out of the fight.

“I always grew up watching Miami, I loved their football program,” he explained. “I always used to go to the games. It's a good fit for me because of the fact that they don't have a lot of defensive linemen, and if I go there and work hard, I can get playing time fast.”

4/8/13: As reported by ChiefMahkeenac, DT Khairi Clark visited Florida this past weekend and made this statement this morning...

"Honestly I think I can say that Florida is basically even with Miami as my top number 1 schools right now. Just loved it up there in Gainesville."

1/8/13: ITU posted a story of DT Khairi Clark. “Chaminade Madonna's Khairi Clark had the build of an elite defensive tackle as a sophomore. He will be one of the top prospects in Florida for the 2014 class.”

UPDATES:

5/1/13: *ESPN Recruiting Nation published a story today on DT prospect Thomas Holley from Brooklyn , N.Y. *(Abraham Lincoln.)

Holley has seen his recruiting stock soar since his offer from Miami and his attendance at regional combines. *The Under Armour All-American now has more than 20 offers.

“Everyone is recruiting me really hard,” says Holley.

Thomas has an idea on which schools will be on his official visit list.

“Definitely Alabama, Miami, Florida State, Penn State,” Holley said as to the teams that will be on his short list, “a couple other schools I want to do more research on. ... I’ll take my officials and have my decision by midseason or end of the season.”

Not just the coaches are recognizing Holley’s talent. *At a recent combine, fellow Cane prospect OT Quentin Nelson took notice…

“I didn’t get to go against him because he is a defensive tackle, but Thomas Holley from Brooklyn really impressed me. *I don’t think he lost a 1-on-1 and was very strong and explosive. I couldn’t believe that he has only played football for one year. He is very good.”

Hurricanes coaching staff have certainly made Thomas a major target at DT this year. *The battle will be tough, especially against Penn State. *As always prior to the fall, it’s a long way to NSD.

4/28/13: ESPN filed a report on DT prospect Thomas Holley at the NY NFTC…

“New York City is not known for producing a large quantity of football talent, but the quality is up there with the rest of the country. Athlete Curtis Samuel (Brooklyn, N.Y./Erasmus Hall) and ESPN 150 defensive tackle Thomas Holley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Abraham Lincoln) were positional MVPs at the camp and among those most impressive players Sunday. Samuel looked smooth in one-on-one drills, and Holley made quick work of the offensive linemen in pass-blocking drills.”

2/18/13: The Canes have found another relatively unknown gem in Coach Golden old stomping ground, the New York-New Jersey area. Thomas Holley just started playing football last season. He’s a very big and quick DT. Thomas was a basketball player, but is now focusing on football. He’s so quick, his coach used him at fullback in short yardage situation. Thomas is gaining exposure as schools get his video. I anticipate he will shoot up the chart as his senior season progresses. The Canes would like to continue the pipeline started last year with Kevin Olsen, Al Muhammad and Gus Edwards.

Curiously, Gaillard drop front runner Florida today. This was out of the blue. Rumors have it he wanted a package deal with one of his HS teammates. Florida said NO. Other rumors have UGA and Miami battling it out. Will either school agree to a package deal. I doubt Coach Golden will go for that condition. I have a funny feeling we have another Collins situation. He wanted his brother in a package. We saw where that went. More drama?

FSU hopes to continue their success at BTW and are targeting Chad. Chad has loved the Noles in the early stages of this process. LSU has also started making a run at Thomas. I’m sure more schools will join the hunt soon. It’s a long way to NSD.

He acknowledges his school has been a pipeline to Alabama in recent years and that his teachers and coaches are encouraging him to pick Georgia. However, Lorenzo is going to be his own man. He won’t reveal his leaders, but did indicate that Georgia, Florida, Miami (Fla), Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, South Carolina are recruiting him the hardest. Lorenzo feels he will probably decide on signing day.

Carter is rated at 96 and ranked the #4 WDE in the nation, according to the 247Sports Composite.

2/20/13: Lorenzo Carter is a stud, 5-Star WDE from Georgia. He’s rated at 96 and the #4 WDE in the nation, according to 247Sports Composite. Lorenzo has already been “offered” by 27 schools. Carter is very tall and very quick off the ball, making him an elite pass rusher. Some say he’s the best off the edge pass rusher in this class.

Our primary competition will be from Georgia and Alabama. He will be a tough pull for the Canes. Then again, we have the Tie.

Miami jumped on Keyon early in the process. He’s already been to campus three times and has developed a very good relationship with Coach Jethro Franklin. Our competition will likely come from FSU and South Carolina, with Florida in the mix. It’s curious that none of those schools has yet offered Brown. Miami is taking full advantage of that situation.

I've heard he's high on our WDE board. Paranos also reported that Grant has a 3.2 GPA. However, it appears Miss. State is the leader at this point. CaneHunt '14: INSIDE LINEBACKERS (ILB) BOARD

Miami’s Need: 1-2

The Canes currently have four ILBs on the roster with only one a senior (Gaines) this season. However, two of our ILBs are on the smallish side (Perryman and Blue) and may eventually be moved back outside to take advantage of their speed. Look for the Canes to recruit and sign two ILBs in this class.

UPDATES:

3/18/13: As reported by Noles247, 5-star ILB Kain Daub announced on Saturday at NFTC Camp in Orlando that he has narrowed down his schools to FSU and Alabama. He plans to make his decision by late spring or early summer.

Daub is rated at 98 and ranked the #2 ILB in the nation by the 247Sports Composite.

2/25/13: ESPN.com posted a story on ILB Kain Daub a couples of days ago. Daub named Alabama and FSU as his early leaders. His close friend, DeMarcus Walker, is doing a good job recruiting him to Tallahassee. Kain also mentioned Tennessee, LSU and Miami as other favorite programs at this point in his recruiting process.

2/22/13: Kain Daub is an elite ILB from Jacksonville, Florida. Kain is ranked the #3 ILB in the nation, with a 98 rating, according to the 247Sports Composite. Many experts feel he is the best inside backer. Daub is physically imposing with room to put on additional weight. He could easily top out around 250 lbs. in college. He’s also considered the top college prospect in Florida. Miami has had little success recruiting the northern Florida area, but Coach Golden has promised to go where the talent is and not back down to any program. Look for our competition to come from FSU, ALA, Auburn and UF. Kain is a long shot, but the Tie has worked his magic before.

Beck has offers are from Florida State, Kentucky and Miami. Andrew feels all the schools are still on a level playing field at this time. However, it evident the Longhorn offer is really special to him.
Beck plans on making his decision on July 14 at his high school, the day before his father leaves for an Army assignment.

Tex :cigar:

3/15/13: On Wednesday, Bulls247 reported on ILB Andrew Beck's unofficial visit to USF. Within the interview, Beck stated that he will make up his mind by the end of July, when his military father is reassigned. He has no favorites at this time.

Beck is rated a 90 and ranked the 11th best ILB in the nation, according to the 247Sports Composite.

2/22/13: Andrew Beck is a hard-hitting ILB from Tampa Plant HS. His 126 tackles is a good indicator the kid can hit. He’s running a little under the radar right now, but look for his recruiting to hit high gear this spring. Can the Canes re-establish a pipeline at Plant? FSU appears ready to ponce on Andrew. It’s a long time to NSD.

CaneHunt '14: OUTSIDE LINEBACKERS (OLB) BOARD

Miami’s Need: 2

The Canes’ current roster has five OLBs, including early enrollee Alex Figueroa. Two additional freshmen (Grace & Bond) will join the group this summer. Only one OLB (Tyrone Cornileus) will be a senior this season. Look for the Canes to sign two (2) prospects in this class.

Prospects:

1. Name: Vincent Jackson

Hometown/School: Jesuit (Tampa, FL)

247Sports Composite: Rating: 86 Rank: #43 OLB

Leader(s): Oklahoma
Status: Offered
Chance: Too early

UPDATES:

4/16/13: ESPN Recruiting Nation reported today on ILB Vince Jackson's unofficial visits this past weekend to Alabama and Auburn. While at Alabama, Vince received his offer from Coach Saban. Upon returning home, Jackson had this to say...

"When the Florida native returned home, it was clear the two schools made an impression.

“Those two kind of stand out amongst the schools that I’ve been to,” Jackson said. “I like schools like Alabama, Auburn, Texas A&M and Oregon, but I don’t really have a top group.”

Jackson has also been to both Miami and South Florida and says his next trip will likely be to Florida State."

2/25/13: Vincent Jackson is a hard hitting OLB from the Tampa area. For a prospect that is rated an 86, according to 247Sports Composite, Vincent has a ridiculous number of schools interested in him. Look for his rating and rank to soar this spring and summer. The canes hope to keep the Tampa pipeline open. Perhaps Coach Scott will impact recruiting in this area.

[247Sports] “One of the hotter prospects in the West in the past few weeks has been Vista Murietta (Calif.) linebacker Tyler Cook.
The talented linebacker comes from an athletic family which has contributed to his talent.
"My parents both played water polo in college and they are both over 6-foot tall," he said "Coaches tell me they love that athletic background. They also love my motor and my passion for the game. Those are some of the key things coaches are telling me."
Cook said he will continue to take more trips this Summer before making a decision on Aug. 8.”

Miami’s Need: 2-3

The Canes currently have four safeties (Highsmith, Rogers, Jenkins & Bush) on the roster. Highsmith and Rogers will be seniors this year. Jamal Carter and possibly Artie Burns will join the group this summer. We have some very good talent but will seriously lack depth after next season, when the Canes will be down to three safeties. Look for Miami to take two or three recruits in the 2014 class.

Kiy is Miami’s #1 safety target in this cycle although he can also play corner or wide receiver. The Canes have been on Hester for quite some time, offering him early last summer. He lists UM as one of his top schools being considered. Kiy seems willing to play safety at the next level. It’s also been reported he is friends with Alquadin Muhammad and Kevin Olsen.

2/19/13: Anthony Moten
is a fast rising, four star SDE prospect out of powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas in Ft. Lauderdale. He’s strong and athletic. He’s currently rated a 91 and ranked as the #16 SDE in the nation by 247sports. Many feel he will raise his rating and rank during his senior year.

Early in the recruiting process, Miami held a strong lead, with Moten visiting the campus five times unofficially. He enjoyed the recent Junior Day at the “U”. We were his clear stated leader. However, it has been reported recently he said he was most impressed with South Carolina. That was until he suddenly stated that he really wanted a Florida offer. He called the Gators his “dream school.” Hold on, last week he was reported to have said West Virginia was one (offer) he was looking for.

Does this sound familiar? 17-18 year old boys say the “darnest things!” It looks like we are in for another wild “diva ride.”

Leader(s): UF, LSU, TAM
Status: Offered
Chance: Too early

UPDATES:

3/22/13: ESPN.com Recruiting Nation has published an article, “Breaking down 2014 prospects.” Their report includes DT Gerald Willis. Here’s what they had to say…

“Willis is a defensive line prospect who can bring some scheme versatility to the table. He has solid height and a thick build, especially through his lower body, and looks to have some room to fill out further. He could potentially fit as a 3-4 DE or could transition to the next level as a 4-3 end, which he plays now. But with further physical development, we feel he will likely end up sliding inside if he continues to play in a system that utilizes a four-man front.”

2/12/13: TOS site recently posted a review of Gerald Willis. At 6-3, 260 lbs, Willis is a very agile end that if he gains weight could slide to the inside to be a very mobile DT. He’s big and strong, but will be a tough pull from LA. However, he may be influenced by the Standish Dobard’s commitment to Miami.

247Sports Composite: Rating: 92 Rank: #10 ILB

Status: Offered
Chance: Poor

UPDATES:

3/9/13: Kenny Young
is a quality ILB from Louisiana. Kenny is rated 92 and ranked the #10 ILB in the nation, according to the 247Sports Composite.

Young comes from traditional LA powerhouse John Curtis Christian and is considered a national prospect. Kenny is a baller, as evidenced by his 81 tackles last season. Miami’s recent success in Louisiana will serve us well. He will be a tough pull from LSU and the SEC, but The Tie has time to work this premium prospect. It’s a long way to NSD.

2/18/13: Travonte Valentine is a massive DT that has given his verbal commitment to Florida. He’s the #2 DT in the nation and should be considered a “soft” verbal at this time. It will be hard for the Canes to flip Travonte from the Gators, but we should Trust the Tie.

FSU has 18 trillion DT's. He's got to be crazy to go there.

This is what I dont understand. How r they doing this? The only positive I can c is that although their DT recruiting has been off the charts, they only got one quality pass rusher in their recent classes. I seems that we have actually done better than them there.
