now has the Noles as his favorite. Sound familiar? Here we go again. It’s a long way to NSD. Trust the Tie.

2/20/13: Travonte Valentine has de-committed from Florida.

2/18/13: Travonte Valentine is a massive DT that has given his verbal commitment to Florida. He’s the #2 DT in the nation and should be considered a “soft” verbal at this time. It will be hard for the Canes to flip Travonte from the Gators, but we should Trust the Tie.

CaneHunt ’14: Big Boards

Miami will offer scholarships to approximately 170-200 prospects every year. They have already offered 82 scholarships for the 2014 Class. Each school has a BIG Board and position boards, which list prospects by their priorities. Our “CaneHunt” boards are our attempt to “guess” the Hurricanes’ recruiting priorities. These boards will change throughout the recruiting cycle. CHECK BACK OFTEN during the year to check on the boards and get the latest updates on prospects. We hope you enjoy CaneHunt ’14.

CaneHunt '14: Cornerbacks Board | Feb 28

Miami’s Need: 1-2

Miami currently has five cornerbacks (Dortch, Gunter, Hope, Howard, Crawford) on the roster with none being a senior. Artie Burns possibly joins the group this summer, although he may start out with the safeties. While this position group is very young and talented, the Canes lack depth. Look for UM to take as many as two CBs in this class.

UPDATES:

3/22/13: 2014 Athlete Jabrill Peppers (Paramus, N.J./Paramus Catholic) appears to have four schools as early frontrunners, according to his coach, Chris Partridge. At this time, Stanford, Ohio State, Michigan and LSU have the early lead.

Can the Canes get in on the action? UM offered Peppers last year and Coaches Golden and Coach D are from Peppers' New Jersey area. It looks like we may have to get him to campus to stand a chance. Can we get him here this summer?

Jabrill Peppers is rated at 99 and ranked the #1 Athlete in the nation by the 247Sports Composite.

2/27/13: Jabrill Peppers is an elite athlete that can play multiple skill positions at a very high level. Jabrill is rated at 99 with a ranking as the #1 ATH and the #6 overall prospect in the nation, according to the 247Sports Composite.

The Canes started early in recruiting him. Coach Golden and Coach D have very good connections in the New Jersey area. They will need it because every major program is sitting on Jabrill’s doorstep. At this point, Urban Meyer at Ohio State and Stanford are leading a pack of who’s who in CFB, including Miami. We must get Peppers to campus to have a chance.

CaneHunt '14: QB Board

Miami’s Need: 2

Miami currently has five quarterbacks (Morris, Williams, Dewey, Crow, Thompson) on the roster, with only one senior (Morris) this season. And until David Thompson actually practices, you need to wonder if he will ever don pads for the Canes. We also need to watch whom new OC James Coley recruits. Until now, UM recruited only PRO style prospects. Already Alin Edouard, a dual-threat QB, made his verbal commitment to the Canes. Does this signal a change in offensive philosophy for Miami? Look for the Canes to take as many as two QBs in this class.

To read more on our quarterback prospects, go up to the BIG BOARD (above).

How do we need 3 TEs? and only 2-3 DTs....??

Hey PUNCH...

BC that's what the roster number dictate. What's your problem?

:cigar:

No problem, it's called a question. Little touchy there tuff guy.

Seeing how we brought in possibly 3 TE's in 2013 and won't lose any TEs that play any significant roll this year or next, I don't see how we bring in 3 more. And seeing that we have essentially 0 DTs that make any impact returning for 2014 and we didn't bring in any bigtime DTs this year, I can't see how we only bring in 2-3.

So yes, believe you are the only person that sees a bigger need at TE then at DT

Hey Punch...

OK. First, we brought in only 2 TEs at the end. If you look at our roster, we have five TEs currently. After the 2013 season, we'll be down to three TEs. After the 2014 season, we'll be critically thin at TE, with only Dobard at TE. That's why we may take up to three in this class, with at least one RSing.

Regarding DT, I believe we have 9 on the roster currently with no seniors. I'll have to check those numbers, but that's what I recall off the top of my head. How many DTs do you suggest we carry?

And about the "tuff guy" remark, you bet buddy. Don't forget it.

Lol!

CaneHunt ’14: OT | UPDATE | Chad Mavety | FEB 28

2/28/13: 2014 OT Chad Mavety was offered by Alabama this week. In an ESPN.com Insider interview, Mavety talked about the Bama offer. He said that Alabama had some of the best facilities; some of the best coaches and are two time national champs. “That’s huge.”

Miami has also offered Mavety. It’s a long time until NSD.

Hey Copeseticman...

CaneHunt '14 only tracks prospects with Miami "offers." To date, Morgan has not been offered by Miami. If that status changes, we'll put him on the board.

Thanks for asking.

CaneHunt ’14: Safety Board (S) | MAR. 1

Miami’s Need: 2-3

The Canes currently have four safeties (Highsmith, Rogers, Jenkins & Bush) on the roster. Highsmith and Rogers will be seniors this year. Jamal Carter and possibly Artie Burns will join the group this summer. We have some very good talent but will seriously lack depth after next season, when the Canes will be down to three safeties. Look for Miami to take two or three recruits in the 2014 class.

you justifying that there's bigger need in next years class for TE's then DT's is dumber then even stating it in the first place.

Hey Punch...

We brought in 2 TEs in the 2013 class, one of which comes in as a junior (Sandland). I agree that our biggest weakness last year was at DT, but that is from a performance perspective, not a roster management perspective. Depth will be more of an issue at TE than DT.

BTW...go up!

CaneHunt '14: Athlete Board (ATH)

Miami’s Need: TBD

Miami, under Coach Golden, loves elite athletes with versatility and flexibility. Every year UM offers scholarships to upwards of a dozen “athletes.” They are primarily skill position players that can play multiple positions at the college level. The Canes sometimes recruit “athletes” for one specific position. Others are recruited as “athletes” to fill in the positions of need. The 2014 class will be no different.

Miami will offer scholarships to approximately 170-200 prospects every year. They have already offered 60+ scholarships for the 2014 Class. Our “CaneHunt” boards are our attempt to “guess” the Hurricanes’ recruiting priorities. These boards can and probably will change throughout the recruiting cycle. CHECK BACK OFTEN during the year to check on the boards and get the latest updates on prospects. I hope you enjoy CaneHunt ’14.

He has indicated that he will go to UF’s Friday Night Lights camp this summer. At this point, we should consider his commitment “soft” at best. It turned out to be a misunderstanding between our coaching staff and him as to the position Miami was recruiting him for. The situation has been smoothed by the coaches.

Hey Texi....

How many DT's did we bring in last year?

--------------------------------------------------------

Hey Punc…

Miami signed one DT in the last recruiting cycle.

1. Ufomba Kamalu - Butler C.C. (El Dorado, KS)

He joins eight (8) other DTs for the Canes.

1. Luther Robinson
2. Curtis Porter
3. Corey King
4. Jalen Grimble
5. Olsen Pierre
6. Jacoby Briscoe
7. Earl Moore
8. DeQuan Ivery

Robinson and Porter are seniors this season. With a normal cap of 85 scholarships (without NCAA sanctions), how many DT can we afford to carry? I say eight. You disagree. Let’s just agree to disagree. OK?

CaneHunt '14: QUARTERBACKS (QB) BOARD

UPDATES:

4/8/13: QB David Cornwell participated in the NFTC and the Elite 11 Regionals in Dallas this past weekend. And he put on a show.

On Saturday, David flashed very strong skills at the Elite 11 regionals at Valley Ranch. For his work, David earned an invite to The Opening. On Sunday, Cornwell displayed his huge physique and matched it with the skills to go with his size. He drew instant comparisons with the Steelers’ Ben Roethlisberger. One talent evaluator made this assessment…

“Big, strong-armed and physically superior to others in this class. Possesses the size and athleticism to surprise you when things break down. In what may be a down year to some degree at QB, it is easy to see why Cornwell is high on most college programs' boards."

3/19/13: ESPN Insider reported today that 2014 QB David Cornwell (Norman, Okla./Norman) made an unofficial visit to Alabama last weekend.

This isn’t Cornwell’s first time in Tuscaloosa. He also attended the Crimson Tide’s first Junior Day in January. David came away very impressed with the facilities, coaches and how the practices were conducted. He called the practices, “NFL quality.”

David met Tide QB AJ McCarron during his visit. He even texted a picture of the two QBs to friends. Cornwell, however, is not finished his UVs, as he is touring SEC schools on his spring break. He said he will likely know what school he wants to go to by the end of spring practice, but won’t announce it until June.

Cornwell is currently rated 97 and ranked the #4 PRO QB in the nation by the 247Sports Composite.

2/28/13: David Cornwell[/B] is an elite pro-style passer from Oklahoma. Cornwell is rated 97 and ranked the #3 PP in the nation, according to the 247Sports Composite.

David is a big QB from Norman, Oklahoma. Yes, that’s the home of the Sooners. However, Oklahoma has been curiously missing from David’s recruiting up to now. While Cornwell’s passing number are extremely impressive, he also racked up 755 yards rushing last season. Can we say Tim Tebow? And Cornwell has stated that UM is in his upper tier of schools he’s considering. Amazing. It’s a long way to NSD.

UPDATES:

4/26/13: RB prospect Sony Michel has given his verbal commitment to Georgia. Best wishes to Sony. But he is off our board.

4/8/13: RB Sony Michel has set April 26th as his announcement date. His top 5 schools are Miami, UGA, UF, FSU and ND.

3/10/13: According to 247Sports, 2014 RB Sony Michel has two schools leading his recruitment, Georgia and Notre Dame, with Miami, FSU and UF still in the mix.

However, InsideTheU reports that Sony states a final five of Miami, FSU, Notre Dame, Georgia and Florida. Miami has been recruiting Sony since the 8th grade and has visited the Coral Gables campus numerous times unofficially.

Speaking of long recruitments, Dawgs247 reported recently that Georgia has been recruiting Sony hard for two to three years. This methodology worked for them in the recruitment of Keith Marshall and Isaiah Crowell.

Finally, Michel has also stated, in an interview for GatorBait, that he wants to make his commitment before his senior season so that he can concentrate on winning a state championship and leave his legacy.

It’s a long, long way to NSD!

2/18/13: Sony Michel, a five star RB prospect this year, has been on the CFB radar since the 8th grade. He may be the top local CFB prospect. Sony has been a major target for the Canes for quite some time. Michel knows UM, having unofficially visited a numerous occasions.

Despite a sophomore year lost to a torn ACL, Sony bounced back last year for 1,258 yards on 127 carries and 18 touchdowns. He’s big and fast, a perfect compliment to Duke.

Last week, Sony named his Top 5 schools as Miami, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, and Notre Dame. Sony plans to decide by this summer. Michel is NOT a lock to Miami. It will be another hard fight.

UPDATES:

4/6/13: GatorNation this afternoon reported...

"GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- ESPN Watch List running back Dalvin Cook (Miami/Northwestern) flipped his commitment from Clemson to Florida on Saturday after visiting the Gators for their annual spring game. The 5-foot-11, 195-pound running back left the spring game and said Florida was tied with Clemson for the lead, but after having lunch with his family, he decided to go ahead and make the switch."

3/29/13: GatorBait.com today filed the following report on RB prospect Dalvin Cook, who just completed his visit to Gainesville this weekend.

“Florida was finally able to get five-star running back Dalvin Cook, a current Clemson commit, back on campus for an overnight visit and the Gators really made the most of the trip.

“"It was awesome," Cook said of the first part of his visit Thursday evening. "They went over film from yesterday's practice and I got to meet all the running backs.

"[Brian White] said this is the only offense for me."

The Miami (Fla.) Central standout returned early Friday morning to watch the Gators spring practice.

“I was just mainly watching the running backs and the type of drills they do so I can go work on it,” Cook explained. “I saw the type of offense they ran, a pro-style offense, get the ball down hill.

"That’s the offense I want to go to to get me ready for the NFL. It would be a plus.”

3/18/13: 2014 RB Dalvin Cook, in an ESPN.com report today, stated that he is still committed to Clemson, but his recruitment is not over. He wants to keep his options open. Dalvin also admitted he’s feeling pressure from teammates and friends to go to Miami, since it’s the hometown school. Cook stated he has built a strong relationship with the coaching staff at the “U.” Miami’s competition, at this point, appears to be Florida and So. Cal.

Cook is rated a 97 and ranked the #6 RB in the nation by the 247Sports Composite.

2/18/13: Dalvin Cook is another elite RB from South Florida. He’s incredibly athletic and can play any skill position on the field. However, it’s his talent as a running back that has college coaches drooling.

Despite giving Clemson his early verbal commitment, UM will fight hard to keep Dalvin close to home. His blinding speed racked up 1,452 yards on 132 carries and 22 touchdowns.

Miami may have an advantage no other school can have. Dalvin’s bother, DeAndre Burnett, is currently a Miami basketball signee. Look for the Canes to go hard after both Cook and Michel for this year’s class.

Scouting Report(s): [ESPN] Joseph Yearby is an elite national running back. He plays with a high motor. Joe is incredibly explosive and elusive. Good things can happen every time he touches the ball. Yearby has elite burst speed through tight spaces, although his top end speed is slightly above average. He’s a patient runner, allowing his blocks to develop. Then he bursts. Joe has excellent vision and elite cutting ability. He rarely gets tackled in one-on-one situations. He just makes tacklers miss. Yearby has a muscular build but probably lacks the size to be an every down back in college. Joe has soft hands, which might make him an ideal and dangerous slot receiver. Yearby is made for the spread offense.

“One of the more explosive and elusive backs this class has to offer, Yearby is a big play waiting to happen every time he touches the ball. Has gifted feet and body control. He's built low to the ground with a compact, muscular build that is tightly wound and extremely fast-twitched, making him very difficult to wrap up cleanly. Explosive back who can turn even the smallest crease of daylight into a big gainer.”

5/1/13: Miami has offered RB prospect Donte Thomas-Williams from Durham, NC. Donte is rated 92 and ranked the #11 RB in the nation by the 247Sports Composite.

Donte, like his teammate Trevion Thompson , is a heavy Clemson lean with the Irish pushing hard. Georgia Tech and West Virginia are also still in the mix. Again, a lot of ground needs to be made up. Both of these prospects will be hard pulls for the Canes. More to come…

NOTE: UM has also offer to Jonatan Hillman. He has either indicated no interest or UM may have cooled on him. This does not mean the Canes have stopped recruiting this prospect, but it has definitely been backed off.

UPDATES:

2/19/13: Ermon Lane is the #1 ranked WR in the nation and the #29 overall prospect, according to 247sports composite ratings and rankings. Ermon is very high on Miami’s 2014 board. He combines speed, size and playmaking ability to attain his five stars. He’s also close friends with Herb Waters and he’s a cousin of Coach Michael Barrow.

Miami is the team to beat right now with Florida State and Alabama also in the mix. And look out for Arkansas, with Coach Randy Shannon on his trail.

UPDATES:

3/22/13: ESPN.com Recruiting Nation has published an article, “Breaking down 2014 prospects.” Their report includes WR Johhnie Dixon. Here’s what they had to say…

“There is a lot to like about Dixon athletically. He has height, good bulk, very good strength and builds very good top-end speed. Has the initial quickness to escape press. Has good awareness and a natural feel to separate versus man and uncover versus zone in rhythm with the quarterback. He's big enough, strong enough and physical enough to play off defenders to separate if necessary. A physical player for the position.”

Tex :cigar:

2/19/13: Johnnie Dixon is another explosive receiver from South Florida. At this early point, UM and Florida have a lead but look for more schools to get in the hunt for this quality receiver.

UPDATES:

4/16/13: ESPN is reporting today that WR Speedy Noil has named his Top 4 schools of LSU, Texas A&M, Florida and USC. Not a good sign for the Canes.

3/20/13: ESPN Recruiting Nation reported yesterday on Devante “Speedy” Noil’s early leaders. Noil has Florida, LSU, Texas A&M and USC in the lead with Louisiana Tech in the mix.

Can his former teammate, Standish Dobard, get the Canes in the hunt? It’s a long way to NSD.

Speedy is rated at 96 and ranked the #13 WR in the nation by the 247Sports Composite.

2/19/13: Speedy Noil is an elite all-purpose everything. Every big time program is after him. When he touches the ball, things happen. Noil has not traveled much and has no known plans to do so, despite his declarations to the contrary. Unless the Canes can get him to visit the campus, he will be a tough pull from LSU.

Ugh!

2/20/12: Austin Roberts, son of a Miami legacy, Alfredo Roberts. Austin is a big wide receiver at 6-3, 210 lbs. He’s been to many of his offering schools, including Miami. Roberts is taking his recruitment very deliberately. It’s a long way to NSD.

UPDATES:

3/15/13: Travis Rudolph flipped from UM to FSU.

2/20/13: Travis Rudolph gave his verbal commitment to Miami on 6/13/12. However, Travis attened Florida’s Junior Day recently and declared Florida on top now. Then he said he’s still committed to Miami. He has indicated that he will go to UF’s Friday Night Lights camp this summer. At this point, we should consider his commitment “soft” at best.

Tex’s THOUGHT: Our first “Home Boy Diva” of the 2014 class. I thought we wanted young men that wanted to be Canes? Doesn’t sound like he wants to be a Cane. You are either on or off the Cane Train. Make up your mind. No games this year!
