Anonymous Coaches Talk Miami

Defense should still be very good - gimmie seasoned downhill returning LBs anyday baby
Still a Questionable O-line, lack of depth can be a problem
Offense better coached, new scheme not as easy to defend, some spark at RB
Expect better Q play even if we have to put Tate in the gun the whole year
Expect better punting and field position
Weak schedule

3 losses would be SOM Same Old Miami, not buying it.

... lost Michael Jackson on that defense, too.

Side note; the Canes were nowhere near a "national championship good" defense. Stop it. One-deep, sure there was talent—but championship squads are two deep across the board.

All those guys you just mentioned; championship-caliber programs have guys ready to step in for all of them.

Alabama is a machine that was literally in the national championship—and their defense gave up 37 points and 482 yards to Clemson—while the Tide still racked up 443 yards against the Tigers, even though they couldn't score.

Miami needs two more classes depth-wise before anyone can call UM's defense championship-caliber.

This is what I keep preaching.

Our starting defense over the last three years has been, if not all world, I would say top 10 top 20. And certainly last year in the top 10. But that’s the 1-deep.

Where we can get killed, and the reason we don’t have a championship caliber team, is that once you get past the 1-deep, it really drops off for us.

That’s the difference between teams like Alabama, Clemson and others and the University Of Miami. We don’t have four and five stars in the two and three deep.

A rash of injuries on defense, and we’re fūcked. To be a championship team, need to have talent ready to step up - into the 3-deep - like the big boys.

Keep Sleeping on Frierson if ya want...
**** no I ain't sleeping on him. I don't consider the Striker position with the DBs or LBs. Imo G is already more talented at the Striker position but he doesn't have the experience that Finley does so G doesn't play as fast. G will make that position look easy when Finley is gone.

U think Bolden is the better safety?
I think when it's all said and done and they are all gone, we will look back at them like this: Kenotra > Gurvan > Bubba > Carter...but this year I thinjk Gurvan and Bubba finish the year starting... just a wild guess by me though.. I realize carter is good and experienced ..and i guess you could say the same for Smith. Basically, despite losing the killian duo, we are in as good shape at safety as anytime i can remember.

I think Gurvan and Bolden start and finish the year as #1s. Gurvan in replace of Redwine and Bubba in replace of Johnson. But yeah Keontra having the best career at The U is very likely. The D will continue to get better with more of Mannys players and more experience in the system.

Did you just say Ed Reed wasn't that Athletic??.....C'mon man....
I said, "Ed Reed wasn't the most athletic guy". Completely different statement bruh....

Ed Reed has said it himself that he wasn't the most athletic. What set him apart from everyone else was a legendary work ethic on/off the field & in the classroom &instincts..

Reed was a FB..BB & Track Standout in HS....
In FB he not only was a DB...but PR and KO return specialist...In Track he was part of his HS 4×100 Relay team...and was a State Champion Javelin Thrower...At UM not only was he a 2 time AA DB...but was an excellent Triple Jumper and Javelin Thrower on the UM Track team....Hope thats Athletic enough....

I'm not doing this again with you lol. For whatever reason, you want to argue with me on things I didn't say & try and twist things i did say...

Saying someone isnt THE MOST ATHLETIC GUY DOES NOT MEAN YOU'RE SAYING THEY ARE UNATHLETIC.

At 5'11 201 pounds, he ran a 4.57... he certainly wasnt the fastest guy on the field... does that now mean I'm saying he is the slowest? NO! The 40 is the only combine stat I've found... I believe that's the only test he took

Lastly, you can click on the link below. Somehow it's well known he wasnt the biggest, fastest most athletic guy, except on this board.

Not going to bother defending the defense. Just show me another team in the coastal that has these kind of skill position numbers.

3 4-5 Star QBs
3 4-5 Star RBs
2 4-5 Star TEs
8 4-5 Star WRs

The talent level and depth we have offensively is so far superior to anyone we play it would be a disgrace to finish third or even second in this division.
Dude, you left out arguably the most important unit on the offense...the O Line.

The better defenses can make adjustments in their style of play. When we cant pressure the qb effectively with how our offense was it was an L period. If you dont believe me ask Pitt, Duke,Virginia, etc etc. Honestly it's the only reason these semenhole games been close either. Dont make me go Dennis green here. Theres a reason we struggled against the better teams. But I'm gonna shut up now. I'm gonna finish up by saying I REALLY think feeley is gonna be a YUGE difference on this team and how we will be able to compete on a larger scale.

The defense absolutely embarrassed Pitt, Duke, and UVA. I understand what you mean though, but to me, I'd rather get beat doing what I do best. I'm not saying he shouldn't be making adjustments, absolutely he should. But Miami was actually 12th in the country in 2nd half scoring defense last year, so he's adjusting somewhat, especially considering we were 41st in the first half and also with that embarrassing excuse for an offense not helping in the least.

All in all, I just don't see how you can really argue too much with the results. As I said, sometimes he gives me a heart attack. But the results are there. If you paired any of the last 3 defenses with a top 25 offense, which Miami should be able to field every **** season, this team is challenging for the playoffs. The 2016 offense was 30th in YPP vs FBS teams, we won 9 games and lost 3 by a total of 11 points. The 2017 offense was 34th in YPP, the team wins 11 games (because we won the close games we lost in 2017). And last year, we know the deal. 84th in YPP, and the bottom falls out.

For all that I wish we hadn’t lost out on multiple elite DB over the past few classes, we have some studs in the backfield. Banda got Quan and Red ready to play when Jenks and J Carter went pro. He’ll have Hall, Bolden and Carter in that same condition in August. Rumph coached up kids like Malik Young, Colbert and Thriller, even Dean started looking good late last season. He’s got Bamdy back and some nice raw materials in Ivey and Blades. Just not too worried about the DBs.

LBs will be best in ACC. DEs will be best in ACC. So the real question mark is how will our DTs play. Can Bethel take another step? Can Ford be more than Kul’s favorite recruit or a Green Tree AA? How about Silvera and the UCLA kid? They’ll dictate whether we’re great or just good as a defense. I’m optimistic. But Willis was the most disruptive player on our defense in years, and his presence can only be replaced by committee.

After reading through this thread I’m very surprised that no one pointed out the mental aspect of this team. There’s a lot of stat and star comments but talent is not our issue in reference to the coastal. Manny is a first year ‘Head Coach’ but he’s not brand new to this team. This team did not believe in the previous coaching staff as a whole for a variety of reasons but Manny still managed to keep an elite defensive unit, think about that.

I know this team will be better for the same reasons Jeff Thomas came back, they feel Manny, it’s an energy thing. This is a transition but not like a brand new coach from outside of the program. All the offense and special teams wanted is what the defense had and now they have it. Baker is not building a new defense, he’s developing player coaches and placing the oweness on the players which is what made Miami great. The O needs time to be a cohesive unit but Enos is the X factor this year that make the offense an asset rather than a liability and it won’t take much.

This team has more talent than last year, they just haven’t had the exposure yet. If you think GW is better than Nesta you’re wrong; this guy is an animal with equal, if not better skills and no anti-football issues. You can’t exploit our secondary if your QB is trying to focus on not shytting his pants. Just watch.

Being athletic doesn't mean you'll be where you're supposed to be. Ed Reed wasn't the most athletic guy but you'd be hard pressed to find someone as smart as him on the field.

I hope the young guys can't put it all together similarly to Redwine. Took him sometime but after a season or 2, he became a dude for us
Go back and read the part after “Plus.”

Athleticism hides warts in any sport.

Get beat on a route? Make up speed.
Bad tackling form? Your momentum gets him.
QB fooled you? Use speed to make up lost ground for a pass break up.
Bad angles. Speed. Missed assignments.
Run downs.
Etc.

Yes speed and being quick and sudden helps tremendously.

Your boy Ed Reed wasn’t exactly slow my man. 4.57 forty, sub 4.20 shuttle, 37 vert. Bet he’s not as good with that.

Adderall isn't like normal medicine. If he really has ADD(which he may not since it is extremely over diagnosed) than the difference between being on your meds and off your meds is insane. I knew kids that had ADD that were completely normal when on their meds and when off their meds they couldn't even pay attention long enough to draw a stick figure. I can't even imagine them trying to play football like that.
What you’re saying is absolutely true. When you really have ADHD, meds matter. He might not have been on Adderall. There are others like Concerta and Vyvanse that have different delivery mechanisms. But all of them are stimulants. I don’t get how he improved off the meds unless he was on such a high dose that it was causing anxiety.
