An evidence-based review of our L vs TAMU (via images)

I haven't read much of the board today so not sure how much this is being talked about, but I thought this was an issue.

Anything Gattis has that beats a zone takes so **** long to develop. You really can't do that against a team like aTm.

I don't recall anyone settling down in the zone and getting their chest turned back towards the qb all night long.
Mentioned it in the OP. As I re-watch the game more closely, I'll see more.

I think something to note is TAMU's pass rush is mediocre. That's not who they are (as a DL). So, a team without a significant rush dropped their guys often and we didn't have enough to slice it up. That is NOT for ONE reason. It's usually a combination of design, QB, and WR.

Hence, why Lashlee’s system is more affective in certain ways because it’s less complex and you’re at full speed. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a long term solution. Elite programs eat that **** up. I think we will see a substantial improvement once we bring in better horses.
BUT

We need to win with the players we have to build confidence and get the better horses, so the coaching staff needs to adjust to get us the 9 win season we are capable of as a spring board…or we will continue to lose key recruiting battles for WRs…

Gattis/TVD/WR deserve to share the blame not just one.

It’s the OC job to optimize the talent on the team. If you don’t have WR to run the type of routes for what you normally scheme. Figure out another way. If your QB has trouble processing options routes or need the WR to be split further out to help him read the defense. Make it simpler. I get these are not the kids he recruited but it’s his job to optimize and put his players in the best position to achieve success. He failed his first test.

The way TVD looked last night, is the same way he looked last week against a weaker opponent. I was actually prepared for him to play bad. This ain’t Lashlee system where anyone can throw up numbers. Reality might be kicking in that he is not all World and can’t make any system work. His OC and WR will need to do more for him not the other way around.

We all knew what we had at WR and when X went down, we knew the passing game was in trouble but that doesn’t excuse them for not stepping up to the plate. There is a lot issues but they were basically going against the second string secondary of Tamu and couldn’t get good separation on man to man coverage. That is all that needs to be said. I do not want another Clemson transfer… for a long *** time.

Yeah, I don’t need to go full speed lashlee 80 plays per game style but some elements of that would be good in this offense to complement gattis’s system.
Agree completely. Especially, towards the end. At the end of the game, even the punt took too long and wasted valuable seconds. Frustrating.

My only issue with that is apparently drops are subjective. I've listened to peers tell me the Redding clear-out incompletion should be a drop (as noted in OP) and others tell me Key Smith vertical route should be a drop (he "touched" it). I don't know what the criteria is for a drop vs a poor throw, but I disagreed with them on those two plays.
Neither of those looked like drops to me. Not even close. On the Key Smith one it looked to me like TVD didn’t necessarily make a bad throw either

The DB was all over Smith when he threw it and TVD looked like he tried to throw him open a bit. Could be wrong. Definitely not a drop though

The George play at first was a horrible look to me. But after seeing the play again, calling it “a mess” is spot on. Not even really sure what to make of it

On the Parrish drop who is the receiver that’s wide open deeper than him? That image is hard to stomach tbh

Bro there were so many bad passes I think you need to watch the game again if you only saw it live. Defenders were breaking up other passes too not as many drops as you think
There were a lot of bad passes but there were drops too. A lot of factors contributed to the 9 points, not just one or two.

Excellent write up. I too was confused about all the talk of drops. There were two drops all game. The one by Parrish and the last play by Smith. Everything else was not catchable.

There are two major problems on offense right now.

First, the camp reports were actually correct this year. Our WR’s can’t get separation. So this problem has been going on for weeks. What is scary is that Gattis has not figured out how to scheme them open. That is a glaring issue. But I guess maybe you can’t make chicken salad out of chicken ****.

Second, suddenly Van Dyke has accuracy issues. The few times he had open guys and he needed to make a play, he missed them. I will say that last play was a great throw. But even if that catch is made we still are not winning. Sad to say, if he doesn’t show improvement then Garcia should get a look. Garcia is likely the better of the two as far as anticipating the throw. That is what is needed when guys can’t get open.
If you can touch it, you can catch it. Sometimes, you have to bail your QB out. Brax Berrios was the master of that.

My reaction when Ivey making plays last night

It seems as tho TVD isn't the overwhelming advantage we had hoped. That's two bad games in a row. He really needs to step up, make better decisions, and get a lot more accurate. I would like to see a lot more Arroyo and Skinner over Mallory. I figured we'd have some WR problems but I didn't expect TVD throwing so many bad passes.
For now, I'm off Ivey's back.. he played very well.
Let's hope Gattis uses the next scrimmage to work the passing game big time. TVD needs all the practice he can get going into ACC play.. or Garcia, either way the passing game needs to get a lot better.

There were two really bad drops. Look at LuCanes analysis of the drops. A lot more bad throws and miss reads than drops imo unfortunately
To be fair, my analysis remains incomplete. That's why I was asking for help on links and pics. Apparently, I already missed one drop. But, I think I got most of the "clear" drops.

An understated play is the 16 yard completion. Nice play. Decent chunk. Might have slipped through Key Smith's hands as he dug it out of the dirt. But, was there more to be had on that play? I don't have an All-22 view, but I'm curious what TVD saw that kept that throw low. Or, if it was just a below average toss.

Nice review. And Ivey definitely deserves all the praise for this game.

Probably got bumped off. I say praise with the same energy you criticize, or ideally more.

It was a bad throw. Smith had to to his best Derek Jeter impersonation to catch it.

Basically it’s time to start giving more 1st team reps to Garcia. And pull the leash in games if TVD can’t run this offense.

Feel bad for the kid, cause clearly this offense doesn’t work to his strengths.. but this is big time college football.. results the anything that matters at this level.

We have depth on defense and should play with tempo on offense. That will help to mitigate the talent issues we have at WR.

There are some very easy RPO concepts we know TVD can execute comfortably, especially with Knighton and Mallory in the game/pattern. Those would have been very successful in steadying the offense. Too bad.

THIS.

Add that and some of those easy reads to the boundary and it can help calm TVD down while he settles into the offense.

We can’t waste this run game. If you told me before hand we would run for 175 yards and outgain aTm by over 100 yards, I would have told you we won by 2 touchdowns.

TVD and the receivers have to get better and Gattis has to help them.
