An evidence-based review of our L vs TAMU (via images)

Probably got bumped off. I say praise with the same energy you criticize, or ideally more.
Yeah I edited my comment right after I found it . Best game in his career in my opinion. Even over the games he caught ints in.

As has been alluded to in this and other posts, TVD has the look of a QB who is thinking way too hard, and that's to be expected considering where he's coming from. Only started half the season last year with a different OC - an OC with an incredibly simple and QB-friendly offense. Now he's being asked to process a field with his go-to WR out and lo and behold he's a tick slow and low.

I will say TVD is too hard a worker and too much of a competitor to fold and break, but the current offensive struggles of our "1st round QB" shouldn't be all that shocking.

And yes there are things that Gattis can do to mitigate some of this - shorter fields, more RPO, etc but personally i think the more Gattis tries to tweak things for TVD the harder it will be for him to pick up the totality of the offense long-term. Realistically (and unfortunately), the best fix is time.

I think you mean if it hits your hands you catch it. Diving at a ball full Superman and your index finger barely touches the ball is not a catchable ball. Come on man.
If you dive and it's on your palms, you should be able to bring it home. The throws shouldn't have to be perfect for them to catch it. Too many guys not making hands catches, trying to smother it.

Neither of those looked like drops to me. Not even close. On the Key Smith one it looked to me like TVD didn’t necessarily make a bad throw either

The DB was all over Smith when he threw it and TVD looked like he tried to throw him open a bit. Could be wrong. Definitely not a drop though

The George play at first was a horrible look to me. But after seeing the play again, calling it “a mess” is spot on. Not even really sure what to make of it

On the Parrish drop who is the receiver that’s wide open deeper than him? That image is hard to stomach tbh
This is important.

And here is why. In the So Miss game, TVD threw deep and short armed it, missing the wide open Franklin (I believe) shorter.

Here, Parrish drops it, but there are “questions” about TVDs touch yesterday and the appearance that some of these short passes were rocketed… (Parrish would admit it is a drop, and likely catches that 90% of the time)

If Rodemaker or whatever his ******* name is, can throw the ball up to a giraffe and win the game, Miami should be able to figure out how to find more than 1 target for TVD to utilize … (since December)

It may be better to stay the course short term and not give TVD any crutches. I think it would be more important to build his confidence. I don’t want the offense overhauled, but some early rhythm building throws could help TVD relax, see the field better, and be sharper with his mechanics.

It’s going to take two or three more games, but the offense will improved. Last night is the toughest situation we will face all year minus Clemson. I don’t think our other opponents will be able to handle our run game. We just gotta get some rhythm and confidence in the passing game.

Show me a video of what you are talking about.

As the resident negative nancy on the board....all me to interject some.....GASP....positivity here.

1. For the first time in a LONG time, we looked ORGANIZED, PREPARED, AND COMPETITIVE in a tough road game setting.
2. The O-line looked much better
3. For as much crap as we give him, Ivey played the best game I've seen him play in a while. It's obvious he's a pure bump and run man corner. Don''t ask him to play zone, don't ask him to bait, don't ask him to think. Line him up man to man and let him play to his strengths. Get him off the field if you're running zone.
4. TVD didn't have a great game. I know he was missing his Cooper Kupp, but I saw ALOT of wobbly passes. He'll be better as the year goes on and learns the offense better.
5. Captain obvious time, we have very average wide receivers. In particular the bubble to Jacolby George highlights our lack of playmaking talent at wide receiver. We have a couple good players....but no great players anywhere on that depth chart. That bubble to George should have been a TD. You hurdle the guy on the ground and get in the **** end zone on that play if you're a great athlete.

So yeah, I think there was some good and some bad with a long term overarching GOOD on the horizon. This team is well coached. Mario knows he has to recruit playmaking wide receivers and I'm sure that will be the priority as we approach the signing period. I'm encouraged overall. There is zero reason we can't make the ACCCG and give Clemson ****.

I would say the biggest issue with the WRs is that they're not fast enough (as a group) to run some of the plays we're asking. And, the combination of not getting separation and not having a clear contested catch player... is a clear limiting factor of any offense.

I didn't address it in the OP, but I thought Knighton played a solid game. Saw some posters debating that, so figured I'd give my two cents.
not fast enough not big enough and not physical enough. need bigger more physical receivers. this is what happens when you miss out on all the top targets.

I agree. My concern here is that this has been known since December, then again in the Spring, then again in the Summer, then Fall camp…

So, how does one digest the lack of adjustments in this key area.

We lost X this week, love him, but we did not lose: Andre Johnson, Santana, Irvin…
Exactly. The staff knows what they have with this WR corps yet they’re asking them to do things they’re just not capable of doing. Make the adjustments. Don’t rely on precision timing routes or plays that only work if you have a legitimate burner at WR.

In the first half Redding had 3 drops alone. One on crossing route over the middle. Another on an RPO slant pass. Also if you rewatch that last play to Breshard Key Smiff was wide open he made the wrong read.
Pretty sure Redding had an out to right hand side of the field bounce right off his hands at the sticks close to the sideline. I vaguely remember it but can’t put a number on who it was.

Didn’t see it highlighted in the OP.

He did but there was 0 separation on the play.

Maybe first thing we can do is get him the phone number of his other WR since restrepo is gonna be gone awhile..

My single biggest issue yesterday is the lack of using RBs in the passing game. We know our WRs are inadequate, especially without X. And we have 2 very good pass catching backs. It's almost criminal they only had 1 catch combined And we had sooo many passes to the WRs...

If the receivers, TVD, and Gattis can't get on the same page within the next 2 weeks we're going to be in big trouble.

Receivers getting not separation and their inability to create after the catch (if they catch the ball) is concerning. With X out, I'd like to see B. Smith (yes I know he dropped the 4th down pass) and Jacolby George get more burn. They seem to be the only ones that can get open and create plays with the ball in their hands.

I've always liked Keyshawn Smiff but for whatever reason he doesn't take over games. I think we've seen Redding is a bit heavy footed with inconsistent hands. Maybe it's time to kick the tires on Isaiah Horton?

Whatever it is, we need to get the passing game fixed quickly before ACC play.

Yep, this system is a low margin for error offense. That may work with an Uber talented team but not for our team and especially not for 10+ play drives.
We had like 5 drives over 10 plays, including a 16 play drive that started from our 1.

Agree on the low margin for error, generally speaking. But despite that we had a single 3 & out, iirc.
