If that number is true, then it's unlikely that Chip Kelly would find his way to Miami....

It would also eliminate some other top names that have a market value near or north of 4 million....

If they're already making near the max of what UM is prepared to offer, their current employer will just give the a raise of a few hundred grand. They won't lose those guys to UM over a couple thousand bucks. Patterson, Gundy and Mullins are maxed out where they are. To lure them with what they make now. Bonus and yearly pay increments will have to be the tool.

200k yearly increments of the length of contract. 500k for winning the conference along with 750k for bringing in a title. Adding in facilities upgrades and constant support to improve the brand.

Those 3 guys will never have access to the talent we can grab at their current gigs. They will never be able to compete yearly for titles either. You have to think they want to be mentioned among the greatest to coach.

Patterson is an odd coach. Multiple good offers, but it would seem he just likes where he is. Period. I really like the guy - but so does everyone else it seems, and he's STILL not biting.

Gundy and Mullins? No idea what their situation is.

Texas down for the past few years and immediate future. A&M/Sumlin hype has subsided. Contract sweeteners that pay him more than is officially reported. Small school where he's king but still in a big city/non-Bumfuk locale that can provide a high quality of life.

There are plenty of reasons why he's happy there. I still think he'd be best served to jump ship at some point while his stock is exceedingly high though.

Odds are against them winning NCs at TCU and MSU. How many NCs have TCU and MSU won in the last 30 years? How many has Miami won? If you want to see what you can do with access to much better talent (the caveat you overlooked in my previous post), then you might make that move.

I think 4M is more than enough. For comparison sake:

College: 7 guys make above 4.5M: Saban, Harbaugh, Meyer, Stoops, Fisher, Strong, Sumlin. The group between 4 and 4.5 are: Franklin (PSU), Miles, Freeze (Ole Miss), Briles, Richt, Malzhan, Ferentz (Iowa), Spurrier and Mullen (MSU). McElwain, Bielema and Patterson are just under 4M. This includes bonuses.
NFL: Pagano is making 4.5M coaching the Colts, Jay Gruden 5M coaching the Redskins. NFL average was 4.9M.

So it just makes sense to start at 3-4M and pay up once they get to a major bowl or BCS playoff. Paying more without results would be foolish unless it's a guy like Nick Saban ... or Chip Kellly.

The distance between Saban and Chip is the distance between WINNER and LOSER. Saban wins NCs, Chip scores points. There is a vast difference.

He could very easily win a championship if he were to stay at MSU.
