Can we stop bringing up "no state tax"???? People take jobs in income tax states every day. You don't think someone who makes $4 million can afford a CPA who can figure out how to minimize that expense? Quit thinking like college kids who don't get the real world yet.

4 is enough for a good coach but it wont get a top coach.

Gundy gets $3.65 firm OkSt

Gundy at Miami would be unfair to college football
I agree. But does 4 million pull him from his school?
and to never have to deal with T Boone again?! Don't underestimate the shortcomings of other situations.

Ummmmm..... Are you serious? It absolutely figures into salary equations, especially for high salary peeps.

I'm glad that we have "Jaromir Jagr" around to educate us all.

This is a valid point. Just look at what some top corporations have "paid" in taxes recently:

1. GE from 2008 - 2013, effective tax rate of -9% (a tax refund)
2. Boeing, same period: -2%
3. Verizon -2%
4. Bank of America: received a tax refund of 1.9 billion in 2010 (as well as a bailout of 1.3 trillion that year). In 2012 it had over 300 subsidiaries running out of the Cayman Islands (no corporate tax).

5. Citigroup paid no income tax in 2010. It received a 2.5 trillion bailout during the financial crisis. It has 427 subsidiaries in off-shore tax havens.

6. Pfizer (currently planning to "buy" Allergan and move offshore to Ireland): from 2010-2012 had a tax refund of 2.2 billion dollars.

7. FedEx: In 2011 received a 135 million dollar tax refund.

8. Honeywell: From 2009-2010 received a tax refund of $510 million.

9. Merck: In 2009 got a $55 million tax refund. In 2012 had over $53 billion stashed in tax havens overseas for US income tax avoidance.

10. Corning: From 2008 - 2012 received a total tax refund of $10 million.

Yes, everyone pays taxes. Especially the crying corporations of America who "pay" a net effective tax rate of 40%......

It's a good thing they're all moving overseas....

I'm sure that the execs in these companies also "pay" all of their federal and state taxes, too.....

That is a silly comparison. Not much you can do with W2 earnings and state tax is real. Not sure what the top rate is in PA, but 90% of the income will be paid at the highest rate. Not many strategies to materially offset 4-5M in wages.

So, potatoes, when someone takes a job in California, is it because that is the only team/school that would hire them, or did they just not check in with this board to get salary advice?

Isn't that like saying people get shot at every day? Doesn't mean given a choice they would rather be shot at than not.
