If that number is true, then it's unlikely that Chip Kelly would find his way to Miami....

It would also eliminate some other top names that have a market value near or north of 4 million....

From USA Today article from October 8, 2015:

Dan Mullen is currently at 4 million
Gary Patterson is at 3.94 million
Dantonio is at 3.67 million (SI had him at about 5.6 million, but I don't know when that article was written...)
Art Briles: 4.2 million
Kevin Sumlin: 5 million
Mike Gundy (Ok St): 3.65 million

Names a bit below 4 million (HCs in college) that the search committee may find of interest (or names mentioned on the board):

Mark Stoops (Kentucky): 3.25 million
Rich Rodriguez (Arizona): 2.9 million
Kliff Klingsbury (T Tech): 3.1 million
Dana Holgorson (WV): 2.9 million
Mike Leach (Wash St): 2.8 million
Kyle Whittingham (Utah): 2.6 million
Tom Herman (Houston): 1.5 million
Justin Fuente (Memphis): 1.4 million
Dino Babers (Bowling Green): 0.4 million

And, just for fun, the lowest paid D1 coach is.......Todd Berry at Louisiana-Monroe earning $360,000 per annum.....

Coaches who may be fired:

Charlie Strong (Texas): 5.1 million
Les Miles (LSU): 4.3 million
Mark Richt (Georgia): 4 million

I know this number has been thrown around by the other beat guys but I just heard it today for the first time. It appears that is what they are willing to pay. In other news, Kyle wright to Miami

Patterson is currently at $3M. Dantonio at $3.3 with Michigan state income tax. $4M with no state tax, in an easy division with Florida talent is still a great raise and opportunity for either of these guys if they ever want to win a NC.

The only way you're going to get a guy like Patterson or Dantonio is if they're dead set on exploring a new job. If they're already making near the max of what UM is prepared to offer, their current employer will just give the a raise of a few hundred grand. They won't lose those guys to UM over a couple thousand bucks. Only way you'll get guys like that offering $4M is if they've made up their mind they want to test themselves with access to better talent.

Or they realize East Lansing and Fort worth are awful...

Patterson, Gundy and Mullins are maxed out where they are. To lure them with what they make now. Bonus and yearly pay increments will have to be the tool.

200k yearly increments of the length of contract. 500k for winning the conference along with 750k for bringing in a title. Adding in facilities upgrades and constant support to improve the brand.

Those 3 guys will never have access to the talent we can grab at their current gigs. They will never be able to compete yearly for titles either. You have to think they want to be mentioned among the greatest to coach.

Patterson is an odd coach. Multiple good offers, but it would seem he just likes where he is. Period. I really like the guy - but so does everyone else it seems, and he's STILL not biting.

Gundy and Mullins? No idea what their situation is.

Texas down for the past few years and immediate future. A&M/Sumlin hype has subsided. Contract sweeteners that pay him more than is officially reported. Small school where he's king but still in a big city/non-Bumfuk locale that can provide a high quality of life.

There are plenty of reasons why he's happy there. I still think he'd be best served to jump ship at some point while his stock is exceedingly high though.

How does going from the Big 10 or Big 12, at their respective schools, to the ACC Coastal = testing yourself? Both of those schools have a heavier lift than UM does when it comes to getting to their conference championships and the final 4.

And below are the salaries of some of the potential candidates who are currently HCs in the NFL:

Chip Kelly: (if not fired) 7 million
Chuck Pagano: (if not fired) 4.5 million

Below is every coach that makes between $4.4 million and $3.0 million in total salary.

We will never be able to afford a proven coach. 4 mill is chump change and if that is as high as we are willing to go you can expect more of the same.

And once again you guys fell for the ole banana in the tailpipe. Smh. When are you guys going to learn? If we were going to break the bank it would have been the last time when we hired Golden. These guys talk a good game but the reality is we are more bark then bite.

4M? That about crosses everyone off most of you wish lists except..Chud, Butch, Schiano, and mario. Maybe Strong. Or some no name coordinator. Nobody else is coming here for 4M.

This completely contradicts everything we've been hearing the last few days. You can't say you are serious about hiring a top tier, proven CFB or NFL coach but then set a hard ceiling that is less than the coach at Mississippi State makes.

Odds are against them winning NCs at TCU and MSU. How many NCs have TCU and MSU won in the last 30 years? How many has Miami won? If you want to see what you can do with access to much better talent (the caveat you overlooked in my previous post), then you might make that move.

I think 4M is more than enough. For comparison sake:

College: 7 guys make above 4.5M: Saban, Harbaugh, Meyer, Stoops, Fisher, Strong, Sumlin. The group between 4 and 4.5 are: Franklin (PSU), Miles, Freeze (Ole Miss), Briles, Richt, Malzhan, Ferentz (Iowa), Spurrier and Mullen (MSU). McElwain, Bielema and Patterson are just under 4M. This includes bonuses.
NFL: Pagano is making 4.5M coaching the Colts, Jay Gruden 5M coaching the Redskins. NFL average was 4.9M.

So it just makes sense to start at 3-4M and pay up once they get to a major bowl or BCS playoff. Paying more without results would be foolish unless it's a guy like Nick Saban ... or Chip Kellly.

The distance between Saban and Chip is the distance between WINNER and LOSER. Saban wins NCs, Chip scores points. There is a vast difference.

Dantonio finished 3rd and 5th in the last 2 years and is in the national title hunt again this year.

He could very easily win a championship if he were to stay at MSU.

And this is all without the benefit of highly ranked classes....

As for Patterson, since he's been at TCU for 15 years, I just don't think he'll be leaving anytime soon....but, for the right price, you never know....
