2020 Roster Discussion

Absolutely.

It is also grossly misinformed. A good accountant nets you $750,000 of that bonus. Invest that at 7.5% per annum over 50 years (kid is 18) and you have $28M for retirement. At 10%, he retires with $88M. Even at 5%, he nets $8.6M (which is $2M after inflation assuming 3% inflation).....

If they offer more than $800,000 in signing bonus, then you should sign...

Lmao thank you. It’s really not that hard of a decision.

So Mixon, Lugo, Evan, and Ameditis are gone. Keysor is back, nothing on Veliz and the 2 incoming guys?

Eskew definitely coming. # was pretty high; Diamondbacks called at end of 2nd round & wouldn’t go over 1M. He’ll put size on his frame and could easily be a 95+ guy in two years. Was just as good or better than Van Eyck(FSU) in high school and he might be putting himself in first round next year.

I hope you are right, but since AZ still drafted him and they have a large bonus pool, this one could go down to the wire I would think.

The $2M is equivalent to 2019 dollars, and am using 3% inflation when we are actually at 2%......

Hopefully, he lives on his salary and never touches the signing until retirement.....

His salary? He can't live on his salary as a minor leaguer. It is ridiculous to think that he is going to invest his entire signing bonus. Minor leaguers make like $1,500 a month and only get paid during the season.

Yikes you really don’t know anything about minor league ball

Yep. The financial realities of pro baseball would shock most people. You get $6k/yr in A, $7k/yr in AA, and around $12k/yr in AAA. You dont get what amounts to a living wage until you make a 40-man roster, and even then its less than $50k/yr.

Add into that the fact that less than 11% of players who get drafted/sign will ever reach MLB, and the truth is that signing bonus is almost all of the money the vast majority of these guys will see in pro baseball.

So for the most part, guys are relying on these bonuses just to get by, they're not putting the money into a retirement account and getting 5% or whatever. Cardinals signed a post-10th round high school kid for 300k.

No way they have the money for McFarland now. We can effectively not sweat that one.

My guess is they try to throw the rest of what they have at the Auburn sophomore pitching tomorrow and that’ll be it for them

Cards also spent $200k to sign their 12th, 16th, and 22nd rd picks

Fangraphs updated their 2020 draft board, we have 5 players in their top-100:

Zamora - 20
McMahon - 39
Cecconi - 62
Gil - 77
Toral - 87

Too bad we only get Cecconi for 2 years. Looking forward to him pitching Friday nights next season.

Cardinals have now signed 32 picks, including all of their top-10. They saved roughly $210k in their bonus pool, which plus their 5% overage ($345k) = total savings of $555k.

They spent $400k of that savings though on overslot signings of 4 of their Day 3 picks. So $155k savings + $125k slot = the max offer the Cards can make to McFarlane is about $280k.

Good news for Miami, no chance he signs for that

What’s next? Eskew has been in negotiations with the Diamondbacks but will likely play at the University of Miami, according to Marc Eskew. He will focus solely on pitching in college.

That would be huge if we get both McFarlane and Eskew to campus.
