2020 Roster Discussion

Maybe he gets some DH time and move Gates to the bullpen full time like they originally wanted to? And then gets some 3B play with Gil at DH? Just a thought.

Looking at his very limited Perfect Game page, it listed him as an OF. Could also see him compete there if that was his HS position. Seems like a good depth pickup with a guy that can play multiple positions if nothing else.

Looks like Lauck played mostly SS his first year before moving to 3B from the end of that season on. He had a Zamora-like 18 errors both seasons.

LOL that's exactly who I was hoping he'd push. WELP

Nothing wrong with a little competition for PT - helps keep the current starters from getting complacent.

And while it seems like a nice problem to have at the moment, the roster could change quite a bit before the start of the season and injuries seem to hit us (and many teams) every year at key positions.

That's a strange pickup because we were all wondering who isn't going to make the cut given the number of returners + recruits. And now we add ANOTHER name.

Seems like an indication at least 1 of Paige and/or Pollak won't be back. I expect them to keep 3 backup infielders so if there arent any other additions good chance it's him, Tuero, and Valdez

some coaching news, it looks like we'll have a new volunteer assistant in 2020. Durkac gets a full-time spot at USF (for those who aren't familiar with the rules, the NCAA limits teams to 2 assistant coaches + 1 volunteer coach).

I see in the reply to Rogers tweet that everyone’s favorite agent is trying to push Harold Martinez for the job

With Friday being the deadline to sign draft picks. We only lost Lugo as expected. I like the pitching haul hopefully they all enroll.

The Woodstock River Bandits have Escala listed as playing for Barry, so it appears that is where he transferred.

Perfect Game updated their class rankings to remove the guys who got drafted & signed.

Usual caveat that PG doesnt include Juco transfers in their rankings, and their methodology skews things in favor of larger class sizes, but we finish with the #6 class and the #4 class in terms of average player ranking (behind only Vandy, LSU, and UCLA). I noticed FSU had a very disappointing class as is and then lost all 3 drafted players in it.

D1 Baseball and Baseball America will put out their final rankings in the Fall, and I'm guessing Miami's class will be somewhere in the 5-8 range. That would make 3 straight top-10 classes according to D1 and BA. Great job of stacking talent by JD and DiMare

which I think is a big miss in how they do it, don't you?

JUCO transfers can have a massive impact, especially when it's a quality add to the pitching staff. that has serious effect.

agreed?

Defintely. Perfect Game rankings are useful for comparing how much HS talent teams are bringing in. And really then it's the average player rating that is more useful since all these teams bringing in 18-20 guys will have a lot of transfers in the Fall. **** we'll have a few with a 13-man HS class.

I put more stock into the D1 Baseball and Baseball America rankings, for a few reasons:

1. They wait until the Fall to put them out, which matters a lot in baseball because rosters are still fluid over the summer.
2. As you mentioned, JUCOs and transfers are very important in baseball, they take those guys into consideration.
3. They do research on how the incoming recruits look over the Summer/Fall, whereas Perfect Game's player rankings are from the Spring.

Perfect Game had us #4 in 2017, #21 in 2018, and #6 now. But really our recruiting has been pretty consistent recently, and D1 and BA do a better job of capturing that. BA had us #8 in 2017 and #10 in 2018. D1 had us #8 both years. It looks like we'll be in that same range, or maybe slightly higher this year, but we'll see where they have Miami in the Fall I guess.
