2020 Recruiting.

We're being thrown into a lot of players top lists, hopefully it actually amounts to something and it's not just fodder. So many of these guys were aiming for are high impact type players that can help pretty much immediately. I hope Coach L is honed in on 2020, because our current situation isn't that great.

Given the current state of the roster, Coach L would be better off getting a waiver for Nysier Brooks and using all 5 available scholarships on players in the 2020 recruiting class.

CLASS OF 2020

There was some who thought that Cross, one of the more discussed names in college coaching circles, was going to make his decision before July, thanks to the four official visits he took to Butler, Indiana, Miami and South Carolina. Obviously, that was not the case ,as Cross played things out through July. Just last week, he took another official visit, this time to Florida. Maybe a commitment was imminent? Not so fast, as he has scheduled an official visit to Texas A&M for the weekend of Aug. 27.

Much of the talk prior to his trip to Gainesville had surrounded Indiana and Miami, but it does seem as if Florida has nudged its way into the mix. Could the Aggies do just the same? They will be the only school to host him during a football weekend, which could turn the tide. Cross has become a bit fatigued by the recruiting process and will likely end things shortly after his trip to College Station

I know Coach L is a fan of scoring point guards then he wants them to average more assist in their junior year. I think this kid is going to Georgia but Miami has made his top ten.

IMO, Daishen Nix or Andre Curbelo would be better point guards for the Miami offense.

6. Miami
The reason Miami sits towards the bottom of this list but not quite last is because they have been inconsistent at best as of late, but they also play in the best conference when it comes to college basketball.

The ACC is by far the strongest conference as it relates to college basketball as they have had three National Champions since 2015 and five teams make the Final Four in that time frame as well.

Miami has made it to only three NCAA Tournaments since 2014 and in that time frame they have won at least one game only once, which was back in 2016 when they made it to the Sweet Sixteen. It is because of this that the Hurricanes are towards the bottom of the list for Earl Timberlake.

The Hurricanes are one of the most inconsistent teams in the ACC and although Timberlake would have the opportunity to prove himself against some of the best players and teams in American, he would be doing so for a team that has had little success as of late.

However, although the Hurricanes have struggled as a team lately, they have had four players selected in the NBA Draft since 2017.

So once again, depending on what Timberlake wants out of his college experience, Miami COULD be a decent fit for the small forward. Miami is one of the only teams on this list that has had more than one player selected in the NBA Draft, so if this is ultimately what Timberlake wants, it could be a good fit.

However, in doing so Timberlake would be playing for arguably the most inconsistent team in the best basketball conference in America.

Miami is a big risk reward team and because of it they are towards the bottom of this list, but if Timberlake is ok with struggling as a team to thrive as a player, this might not be a bad option.

Interesting perspective but I disagree with his opinion.

This is especially short sided when you think that this writer has Pitt ranked 2nd. Miami won the ACC in the 2012-13 season, finished 3rd during the 2015-16 season and 4th during the 2017-18 season. Pitt has only every beaten or finished higher than Miami once since joining the ACC.

His official visit has been set for September 27th. Technically, Miami gets the last visit but he has not setup a visit date for Kentucky.

Good news and GO CANES.

WHERE DOES THOR FIT IN 2020 CLASS?
Q9sxe5dnm6m6hbmcd0rm

J.T. Thor (Nick Lucero/Rivals.com)
Over the weekend, the news came out that power forward J.T. Thor would transfer from Huntington (W.V.) Prep to Norcross (Ga.) High and that he would now graduate with his original class, 2020. So, we have to move him out of the 2021 rankings and find a home for him in 2020 and it wasn’t exactly easy to do.

Thor had been ranked No. 11 overall in 2021 and had been considered a five-star prospect. Much of that ranking was on potential and having two more years of high school to overcome some inconsistency and get stronger. However, Thor hadn’t always played like a five-star when we saw him during the summer and was going to be moved out of five-star status in our next 2021 update. So, it’s hard to move him over as a five-star in 2020.
After looking at the current lists and gauging where Thor might compare in the 2020 class, we’ve locked him in at No. 53. Yes, it’s a pretty conservative number on the switch. But, Thor was already going to slide some in 2021 and much of his ranking was based on having two more years of high school. So his time to develop has been cut in half and it’s hard to move him into the class of 2020 over guys like the two directly in front of him – Lance Ware and Mark Williams – who we believe are more complete players at this point.

Will that rankings switch prove to be a bit too low, too high or just right? We’ll see how that all shakes out, but regardless of his rankings number the athletic four man is in good shape with programs like Auburn, Arizona, Clemson, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Miami, Mississippi State, N.C. State, Oklahoma State, UCLA and many others in the mix.

FIVE-STAR NIX READY TO TAKE NEXT STEP IN THE RECRUITING PROCESS

Daishen Nix (Nick Lucero/Rivals.com)
This week, five-star point guard Daishen Nix will be in California for the Steph Curry camp. When he finishes a few days of working with one of the NBA’s best players, the top-15 ranked senior will be done with his summer basketball and should be ready to take the next step in his recruitment.

Here’s what we know so far. Nix has agreed to take official visits to Kansas and UCLA (look for dates to be finalized after Curry camp) and he has already been to Maryland officially, so those three are certainly deep in the mix. Alabama, Kentucky, Marquette and Washington are among the others that are jockeying for position while Duke and Virginia have also been in recent touch.

I had the chance to watch Nix play a few more times over the weekend at the Fantastic 40 and I’m as sold as ever that we’ve made the right call with his lofty ranking. I know there are some out there who question what he does because he didn’t play on one of the shoe company circuits and didn’t have a monster outing at USA Basketball a few weeks ago. But I’ve been watching what he does in a team environment, how he makes players better and his potential as a defender on top of what he does offensively and I think his strengths ultimately translate to the highest level.

CLASS OF 2020
UNDECIDED

We broke the news on Sunday evening that JT Thor will reclassify into the 2020 class, speeding up his clock to college by a full year. In doing as such, Thor is expected to publish his final school list by the end of the month, commit in October and sign in November. He has already visited Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Miami and New Mexico this year and could visit Oregon and then UK again within the coming weeks. The schools that I would watch would be Kansas, Maryland, Oklahoma Stateand Oregon, and, if it was to offer, Kentucky. Oregon would be my pick for now, but that changes depending on how Kentucky goes about further recruiting him.

What he brings to college is a versatile skill set where he can play either forward position. The lefty can make shots to the perimeter, is an underrated playmaker that works great out of the high post and also defends various spots in the half-court. He must be accentuated in the right system and also become more efficient and consistent with his energy and production, but there is a good reason for why he is so highly touted and recruited nationally.
