Marshall was 5th in the country against the run last season with similarly sized DLinemen. Guidrys defense doesn’t need it.

While I agree conceptually, it’s a different conference with different coaches and strategies.

I think Guidry will be successful with what he’s got on the roster currently, but physicality is elemental on football. You can get by a few games here and there by masking a lack of physicality.

But not a whole season.

Marshal wasnt a big team but they were not exactly small at the DT position either. Last year they had 294 and 303lb starting tackles. Backups and DEs were a little lighter but its not like Guidry was running out 275lb guys on the inside.

I dont think this scheme requires huge space eaters or 0 tech nose tackles but every scheme needs some physical guys who wont get pushed around. The only guy I see who looks like he could successfully take on a double team is Moten. Thats my concern.

I think people misunderstand what I mean.

Do we WANT size and speed? Of course. We are recruiting it.

Is the defense dependent on it? No.

Sure athleticism being equal yeah of course stack the bigger prospects. Those guys are rare. Guidry moves guys around so they need athleticism for versatility. I think he’d rather a bunch of 280+ athletes than 300+ run stuffers.

Physicality isn’t all size. There are plenty of 280 lineman more physical than others with 20+ lbs on them.

And our talent is better. I don’t understand why this is brought up as if we just straight up flipped rosters with Marshall in.
It's a bit better not by a long distance imo. But it's getting there with this class that arrived recently

Mario Cristobal and staff stayed hot on the transfer portal trail, as defensive end Anthony Campbell from the University of Louisiana Monroe (ULM) announced his commitment to the Canes. Campbell, originally from Bartow, Florida, will be returning to his home state to join the Hurricanes and is expected to make an immediate impact by adding depth to their defensive line rotation.

Standing at 6-foot-7 and weighing 283 pounds, Campbell is an imposing presence on the field. After graduating from high school in 2018, he began his collegiate football career at Independence Community College in Kansas, where he played for two seasons before transferring to ULM.

In the 2022 season, Campbell recorded 13 tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble. His performance caught the attention of several Division I programs, with recent offers from Auburn, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, TCU, Penn State, and others. Ultimately, however, Campbell has chosen to take his talents to Miami, where he will be a valuable asset to the Hurricanes' defense.

With his size and athleticism, Campbell has the potential to make a significant impact on Miami's defensive line. The Hurricanes have been busy gathering commitments from the transfer portal in the last week — picking up RB Ajay Allen (Nebraska), CB Ja’Dais Richard (Vanderbilt), WR Tyler Harrell (Alabama), and now Campbell. The Canes are expected to stay active and add more to the roster. Stay tuned to Canesinsight for all of the updates.

What the **** , do this guy run a 4.5??

great get! measurables are awesome. From the film he likes to work as well. last 2 people on this team that size went in the first round.

I highly doubt this kid will be a special talent for us, but that’s OK. Jon Ford wasn’t special, but his size, physicality and effectiveness at being a reliable space eater in the middle got him to the league.

There are only so many 300+ pound DTs with the motor and athleticism of a RB.

If this guy can come in and be a reliable, contributing, quality depth piece then we’ve won.

Quality depth is the key to being competitive over the course of a full football season, and we haven’t had that in years - especially in the trenches.

I’m with you

It’s not ideal long term and Mario flat out doesn’t believe it either that’s evident

What annoys the crap out of me is posters that don’t add things to discussions other than to point out the fact that we don’t have what it takes to compete with the big boys

Like noooooo ****

We haven’t in 20 years

Mario will fix that in recruiting and then hopefully we have an attractive enough season on the field to get some difference makers in the early portal

But for now it’s ok. I don’t think there was much to really move the needle when it comes to massive talented DTs anyway so we gotta rely on the track record of Guidry here which gives us a fighting chance I think
