I highly doubt this kid will be a special talent for us, but that’s OK. Jon Ford wasn’t special, but his size, physicality and effectiveness at being a reliable space eater in the middle got him to the league.

There are only so many 300+ pound DTs with the motor and athleticism of a RB.

If this guy can come in and be a reliable, contributing, quality depth piece then we’ve won.

Quality depth is the key to being competitive over the course of a full football season, and we haven’t had that in years - especially in the trenches.
💯
We are a desperate fanbase that wants every single recruit or transfer portal guy to be an early draft pick.
Most of the playoff teams do t even have that.
But I’d rather be practicing everyday against high level p5 players that can start on a lot of teams as opposed to practicing against dudes that wouldn’t even sniff the 2 deep at most p5 schools.

This team has lacked a lot of things and quality depth is a huge part of the problem.
So while this guy might not be an all American, he definitely will get the attention of the other players in his position.

Players need the pressure of competition. They either fold or grind harder. Having an elite player with no one on the team that has the ability to take away snaps from him is not what you want and that’s what we’ve had.
But it’s not only practice if your starter goes down, you don’t wanna jump off a cliff when the second or third string is come in and that’s a benefit that the front runners have that we’ve also haven’t had.

And our talent is better. I don’t understand why this is brought up as if we just straight up flipped rosters with Marshall in.
It keeps getting brought up because we are a Power 5 program who doesn't have much Power 5 talent or depth at DT. It is really quite simple. Portal shopping every year at DT is not a long term solution to the problem because guys like Campbell and Gore are very far reaches. They most assuredly should have brought in more than 1 HS DT at the position because that is the long term solution. Every year they don't bring in enough HS talent at the position is another year of portal shopping for reaches.

I am not getting giddy about portal reaches at this position. Maybe you are. The guys they brought in pale in comparison to what they have brought in at other positions. Maybe you like seeing us get dominated up front whenever we play a real program. UNC just ran for another 450 yards. Lucky we don't have Paul Johnson to worry about any more at GT.

I have 2 gripes about things this staff has done. The hiring of Gattis (I screamed bloody murder the second he got hired) and poor recruiting at the DT position.

DE needs rotational guys but DT needs difference makers and rotational guys. No spot is locked in at DT, not even LT’s and we all know his ceiling is sky high.
If u don’t think LT56 spot is locked in den ur on drugs

He's from a squad that would have beaten the stank of our Canes last year.

Elevates the floor to say the least.

The last 2 best DTs we had were Moten and Willis. Moten was 285, Willis 275. Miami roster listed them at that. We have had 300 lb linemen. Manny had Ford and Miller over 300lb. But the more productive ones were the first 2 i listed. Deen playee in the big 10. Not being 300lb didnt stop him from making plays against NFL OL. If a guy can play, bring him in. With these spread offense, teams are hardly lining up in the I formation and pounding it ahead
Rj and Willis both had dts that would eat the double teams consistently next to them
it seems that is the concern of many here
Thst we have no true zero or one
Who will just eat double teams
Taylor was good when he was next to Jackson who was eating the double teams
We didn’t bring in a single player who can do that

I wish Jordan Miller had stayed
