Here is the latest as we head into the final official visit weekend.
- WR Vance Spafford (Orange County, CA) cancelling his visit took Miami by surprise, but this is part of the business of recruiting. This one is still alive so let’s see how the weekend plays out.
- I sensed a surprising amount of long-term confidence with WRs Tristen Keys (Hattiesburg, MS) and Calvin Russell (Northwestern). The Canes are playing the long game there and don’t intend to let up, no matter what happens in the next month.
- RB Derrek Cooper (Chaminade) continues to trend to Miami. He is a top-of-the-board offensive target. I am very interested to see how the other RB spot plays out. RB Javian Mallory (West Boca) visits this weekend, but the program doesn’t want local players committing and then flirting with schools like Alabama. If you’re looking, they’re looking. They hosted RB Jae Lamar (Moultrie, GA) and he is a very real option. I’m watching this situation closely.
- A name beginning to trend to Miami is TE Zachery Turner (Dallas, TX). In the 2023 class, coaches asked some of the local players about the best players they faced. Jeremiah Smith and the other Chaminade kids emphatically said Elija Lofton. The staff has heard similar feedback from Texas players and coaches about Turner.
- I continue to like where Miami sits for TE Israel Briggs (Vidalia, Ca).
- I also like Miami for recent Tennessee decommit WR Tyran Evans (Charlotte, NC). The Vols wanted to keep him, but the Canes pushed hard after their official visit. Evans is a legit 6’3, 200-pounder who produced against good competition and wins battles in practice against CB Samari Matthews (one of the top overall players on Miami’s board). This recruitment has nothing to do with Keys and Russell- Evans is a take no matter who is in the class.
- I still have Miami as the favorite for OL Breck Kolojay and DT James Johnson (Northwestern), but they are visiting big money schools (Kolojay-USC/Tennessee, Johnson-Texas) so we need to wait and see.
- I think Miami is on the outside looking in for DT Keyshawn Stancil (Raleigh, NC). Clemson made a strong move on their visit.
- Miami is also battling Clemson for S Blake Stewart (Atlanta), who visits Michigan this weekend. It’s a fight, but the Canes are in a strong position there down the home stretch.
- I expect Miami to flip LB JJ Edwards (Orlando). He tested off the charts at the UA Camp (4.57 forty) and had a great spring. He needs to gain some weight, but should be 200+ on arrival at 6’1.
- The Canes will put the full-court press on WR Jasen Lopez (Chaminade) this weekend. He is a priority for Coach Cristobal.
- EDGE Jaquez Wilkes (Wadley, AL) will not be able to visit this weekend due to a legitimate family health issue. Miami supports him rescheduling the visit and remains firmly in play.
- The Canes are still working to flip Michigan commit CB Brody Jennings (Jacksonville) and have a great shot.
