Miami TE Elija Lofton Drops 10 Pounds Ahead of Junior Season

During the offseason, you will see many players try to rebuild their body and get into the weight room to add muscle. We have seen many Miami Hurricanes players bulk up including Bryce Fitzgerald, OJ Frederique, Malachi Toney, Armando Blount, among many other players on the team. On the other hand, Hurricanes starting tight end Elija Lofton has been doing the opposite.

On yesterday's CanesInSight podcast, DMoney stated that Lofton has shed 10 pounds off his body and now weights 243 as he continues his diet.

"We have a little taste test thing we do for Ibis Media, where people eat desserts and all these different things. Everybody was slamming the desserts. Ethan O'Connor, Marquise Lightfoot, all these guys. Lofton said, no thank you, I'm on a diet. He's down to 243. I heard his readings on the miles per hour and all that stuff were all good," said DMoney.

Lofton has been named among many media outlets to breakout this season. This past season with the Hurricanes, he recorded 23 receptions for 218 receiving yards, and three touchdowns. The year prior, he totaled for nine receptions for 150 yards.

With Lofton dropping 10 pounds off of his body, it now makes him more of a receiving threat as he will move quicker with his acceleration and agility. This is good news for both Lofton and the Hurricanes.

Elijah on the other hand people REALLY have no clue how good he is. I don't know if your take is based off things you've seen or what you've heard. Elijah has been dealing with allot of nagging injuries & honestly his skill set hasn't been showcased yet. I think getting a lil learner will do miracles for him because he had been carrying more weight then necessary. My only concern is with the loss of weight will he still get the snaps cause we all know the main role in this scheme for the tight end is blocking and diversion. Really hope Dawson finally is able to utilize him properly and mensah looks to him often enough.

Hasn't "quite" lived up to it?

I know there's people saying, “This is classic DMoney hype. You're comparing a guy who has not played a snap to one of the best players in the country.” And, yes, these comparisons are based on projection. But if you think I'm just being a fan and a prisoner of the moment, I will direct you to our head coach, Mario Cristobal, who made a very similar comparison earlier this spring:

You wish you had a bunch of him. The truth of the matter is, I personally think if [Lofton] was a linebacker, he'd go over there right now and give everybody a run for their money. That's how much faith we have in him as a freshman. He comes from Bishop Gorman, where there are very high standards. And he he's exceeded expectations. I'm pretty fired up about the guy. We talked a lot about Rueben Bain last year early on and Francis Mauigoa. And when you start talking about Elija Lofton, you feel a little bit the same way.

Notice that Cristobal didn't compare him to other freshmen. He compared him to Francis Mauigoa, Freshman All-American. Rueben Bain, Freshman All-American. This isn’t a fan or media member who benefits from unrealistic expectations. This is the head coach. So that gives you an idea of what's happening behind closed doors at practices with Elija Lofton. I’m excited for the spring game on Saturday where everyone can see him for themselves.

I think we’ll see plenty of that this year. But if Lofton has regained his athleticism and quickness, you’ll see him out there wide too because he can route you up when he’s right.

Lofton was pretty good as a freshman. But like so many players that 2nd year slump seems to be a real tihng. I don’t know if its because expectations run too high or if some of these guys don’t know how to take care of their bodies in their first real college “off season”.

Take **** however you want. You always on some hornery ****. Maybe menopause. Zero excuses gave. Kid was in bad shape and his skill set up to this point AS A RESULT of those two things hasn't been able to be utilized. He's also on a team loaded with options and there's one ball. Too many of y'all ****** people try to interpret something. If you're too stupid to understand not everyone is for numerous reasons able to show who they are as a player than oh well. This ***** **** acting like people need to make excuses for anyone is foolishness. Hopefully for his future he'll be able to show here or elsewhere what kind of player he is.
