A ghost town air base still hopes to fly again : Homestead, once a showplace, was devastated by Hurricane Andrew, then by defense cuts. - latimes

So, wasn't Homestead A.F. base "hurricane proof"? I know i currently live in Ohio but I'm originally from SF. I don't know if Irma will be worse than Andrew, but i do know how concerned i was for my family while fending off Buckeye fans up here during Andrew. But to play a game while wondering if my house is still standing (at least) seems to be an unfair expectation and that is devoid of perspective.

Extra study practice time, extra time to get healthy, extra time to get fresh, one leas game on film for FSU, oh & we don't have to blame in bum **** that we shouldnt have been playing to begin with...Sounds more like Richts decision then Flake.

You have no idea how devastating this thing could potentially be, do you?

If this thing hits Miami directly large portions of the city could look like they've been bulldozed and could be without power for weeks/months. The airport could be closed for an extended period of time as well as some roads and highways.

At that point you think these kids are going to be lounging around the dorms, practicing, and studying film huh? Not removing tree limbs and debris from their homes (if they're local).

Category 1 Hermine came through Tallahassee last year and we had a tree down crossing a major road for almost 24 hours before they could even get to it to move it. Power for some was out for almost 10 days.

I think the game should have been canceled & I have family in Florida. 100% correct move. Idk why you're trying to pick a fight w/ me.

I'm not trying to pick a fight, but this thing has the potential to be a once in a lifetime type of storm and it might hit directly on top of Miami.

I have a feeling extra time to practice and get healthy is not going to be an option on the list after this thing passes through. I'll be surprised if the game isn't cancelled early next week. It would be a major effort to get all the players together by Thursday or Friday to travel to Tallahassee.

Administration had no choice but to cancel, shame it could not be rescheduled. I may be just being negative on this, but really believe it hurts us at some point later playing one less game. Some selection committee for bowl game or possibly playoffs can use this as reason to crap on Canes. An 11-1 or 10-2 team is going to be more attractive than a 10-1 or 9-2 team in someone's viewpoint. Hope am wrong, but just think an excuse to shaft us.

I just dont understand why we cant reschedule.

Look at the schedule

That would be asking a lot. Easier to complain.

how about thinking outside the box. Last game of the year for us is 11/24 bowl season starts mid to late december. We don't have time to schedule it then?

WRONG buzzer sound. ACCCG is the following week. Only ACC game that weekend will be that game, and hopefully we're in it. We better be.

Good. ****** game that should have never been scheduled

Let Richards and everyone else prepare for FSU

A lot of posters apparently having never supervised large numbers of 18 to 20-year-olds nor coordinated the movement of any amount of equipment, supplies, etc. beyond a trip to Publix.

The university is responsible for the safety of all students who are in the area i.e. those who can’t go home. That number may be in in the thousands. In order for the university do so, it needs maximum effort by all staff members, a lot of the same staff members who would normally responsible for getting the team out. Additionally the athletic staff needs to prepare the Hecht, Schwartz, and other facilities for the potential hurricane. Sorry, Miami is really not that big and the protection of life and property takes precedence.

Having supervised said 18 to 20-year-olds in large numbers, and away from home; I can tell you that this situation would create a serious focus issue. Many worry about their Moms and Dads and their own significant others and, yes, in many cases, their own children. The 24/7 coverage of Harvey should be a primer on just how much Irma could possibly dominate all forms of media. Please realize you can’t put the players in confinement and everyone of them has a phone.

I get what Dynasty is saying, and salute his service as a Special Forces Communications Sergeant. This storm wouldn't stop an A Detachment, but such a detachment consists of veteran operators backed up by Nightstalker Helos, AFSOC -130s, and Army and Navy boat units...Not wet behind the ears teens or just out of teens "kids" backed up by a small private school with a Cat 5 threatening it's very existence.

Been reading this whole thread and I'll just say some of you guys either have no idea what this storm is capable of or you have no cares for anyone else but yourselves.

The guy ( meat I think) that stated" they better play this game cause we ain't no better that UFAG" should go sit in the middle of South Beach and relax with a cold beer cause he thinks this is some minor sprinkle headed that way.

Anyone that can't see that this is the correct decision has no idea what a hurricane this big is all about. You don't think these kids would be worried about their families Saturday while their homes were getting pounded?Great way to get one or more hurt by playing while their minds are elsewhere. And if this thing comes up the coast the way they are showing it may be weeks before they can open the airports to get back.

Cancelling this game was the right thing to do for so many right reasons and anyone that can't understand the decision should just go FcK themselves.

We already knew that this board is full of the lowest common denominator among the Miami fan base. You know that greaseball reputation that our fanbase has? Welcome to Exhibit A.

In his defense as a Miami fan he may not have realized there is an ACC title game. I have to remind myself from time to time.

When someone points out our greaseball fanbase, it is very telling to see who gets offended.

Good observation TOC. I was surprised to see that UM does not have a bye this season. And, as you mentioned, the ACC Championship Game is 2 December, a week after UM's last game against Pitt. The Ark State game has no impact on whether UM reaches the ACC Championship Game. As for an 11-game regular schedule working against the Canes reaching the College Football Playoff, I will be plenty happy if the team is so good as to enter that conversation. Such a controversy would mean that UM beat Clemson or Louisville in the ACC Championship Game (sorry FSU, but you will not reach it without François). Does anyone think UM is ready for that leap forward?

My biggest concern is the impact on practice next week if the storm has a devastating impact on South Florida. FSU is wounded, but still dangerous. Practice time is a must in the week before the game.

I heard we were going to be practicing all week in our IPF......oh wait.

Actually, UM does have a bye on 7 October and so does Ark State, as another poster stated. But, the bye helps UM prepare for a Thursday night game at home against GT. Not sure it is a good idea for UM to face GT on a short week.
