Miami-Arkansas State cancelled

They won't be getting ready like they would during a normal bye week.

This storm is going to be a huge distraction.

The best thing from a pure football perspective would have been to get these guys out of Miami, play the Arkansas State game, and practice in Atlanta away from all the distractions.

No. A lot of the players might have family responsibilities. They should concentrate on doing whatever is necessary to make sure their families are safe.

I live up north but I have a great deal of concern over the effect this storm might have on south Florida. I recently saw a lot of videos of the August 1st flooding in south Beach. I grew up on the beach, living most of my life in Bay Harbor, the islands near Surfside and just across from North Miami by the Broad Causeway. I left in the early '60's when my family moved to central Florida.

I don't ever recall seeing flooding in south Beach like the various videos I saw of the aftermath of the August 1st rains. I'm sure most of you know what I am talking about, since most of you live in south Florida. Of course, the minor flooding on south Beach was a tiny fraction of the flooding in Houston--there's no way one could even compare the two. So, it was a nuisance, not devastating and life-threatening like Harvey was in Texas.

Still, if a bad rainstorm, with around 7 inches of rain (as I found in a weather report) could cause that kind of flooding in south Beach, what would a big hurricane do? Remember the destruction from Andrew, particularly in the southern parts of the county as I recall. A lot of that was from wind, I guess. What can a real hurricane, particularly one with is Category 3, 4 or 5 do to parts of Dade County, both from wind and much more rain than the August 1st rainstorm that created minor flooding in South Beach? Could a huge storm surge completely overtake Miami Beach and parts of the mainland?

Now, maybe I'm being an alarmist and perhaps a lot of you will disagree, but I look at the worst case scenario. I'm very concerned about very serious destruction, flooding, and danger to life from this, which right now is perhaps the most powerful hurricane ever (according to reports).

So, we can't worry about games. I'm just being realistic and hope that I'm wrong, but forget about this game. (I even think there might be reason to cancel FSU depending on the path of the hurricane and whether it heads up the coast and affects the panhandle.)

If you're religious, pray. Neg away if you must, but I think this could be very bad, and I hope it is much less than that.

My thoughts and prayers are with all the Canes fans, the players and staff (and their families) and everyone down there.

I'm not going to worry too much about playing ten instead of eleven, preparing for FSU and all of that. I hope that south Florida and all you folks down there get through this safely. I just realized, that there have only been two other Category Five hurricanes to hit south Florida, the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane and Andrew in 1992. I suspect that some of the posters on this board don't remember Andrew--if they are in school or recently out of school they might have been born after Andrew, which was 25 years ago. Some of you might have been very young when Andrew occurred.

You could get a hurricane that makes you forget football for a while. I hope that doesn't happen. Stay safe.

My point of view is that they had better be ready for FSU. We have the best opportunity to beat them that we've had in years. I'm not accepting these excuses of yours... and I doubt most of the fanbase will either.

These are not excuses. I'm hoping that we end up playing FSU, not only because I want to play them and beat them but it will mean that the effect of the Hurricane might not be that bad. I've been drooling over the ***-whupping we could deliver to them this season. They have a very questionable QB who could not possibly know the offense. Besides, with that body, he might be broken into little pieces by the end of the first half. I'm absolutely sick of losing to them.

So, tough guy. You call these excuses? How old are you? Are you old enough to remember Andrew? Where do you live? if you live in south Florida, let know how it goes. One model says it is head straight for Biscayne Bay. Then up the coast.

I love all the keyboard warriors who have all the prescriptions for how the university and team should handle a semi-meaningless game with Arkansas State when there is a possibility of great danger to their families. I would think many would rather be with their families. I still wonder about the ages of these internet tough guys.

That would be asking a lot. Easier to complain.

how about thinking outside the box. Last game of the year for us is 11/24 bowl season starts mid to late december. We don't have time to schedule it then?

You've actually HEARD of the ACC Championship Game, right? Like, you are aware that it exists, correct?

Good observation TOC. I was surprised to see that UM does not have a bye this season. And, as you mentioned, the ACC Championship Game is 2 December, a week after UM's last game against Pitt. The Ark State game has no impact on whether UM reaches the ACC Championship Game. As for an 11-game regular schedule working against the Canes reaching the College Football Playoff, I will be plenty happy if the team is so good as to enter that conversation. Such a controversy would mean that UM beat Clemson or Louisville in the ACC Championship Game (sorry FSU, but you will not reach it without François). Does anyone think UM is ready for that leap forward?

My biggest concern is the impact on practice next week if the storm has a devastating impact on South Florida. FSU is wounded, but still dangerous. Practice time is a must in the week before the game.

Actually, UM does have a bye on 7 October and so does Ark State, as another poster stated. But, the bye helps UM prepare for a Thursday night game at home against GT. Not sure it is a good idea for UM to face GT on a short week.

That is not a "bye" for Ark st. They play Oct 4th and Oct 14th so people saying that want them to play 3 games in 10 days.

Extra study practice time, extra time to get healthy, extra time to get fresh, one leas game on film for FSU, oh & we don't have to blame in bum **** that we shouldnt have been playing to begin with...Sounds more like Richts decision then Flake.

You have no idea how devastating this thing could potentially be, do you?

If this thing hits Miami directly large portions of the city could look like they've been bulldozed and could be without power for weeks/months. The airport could be closed for an extended period of time as well as some roads and highways.

At that point you think these kids are going to be lounging around the dorms, practicing, and studying film huh? Not removing tree limbs and debris from their homes (if they're local).

Category 1 Hermine came through Tallahassee last year and we had a tree down crossing a major road for almost 24 hours before they could even get to it to move it. Power for some was out for almost 10 days.

I live in Rockville, MD outside D.C. and we had a surprise derecho storm with high winds at the end of June in 2012. We were without power for days. Two elderly people in my high rise died, I guess from heat and dehydration because the AC was out and we had a string of very hot days. I'm been wetting my lips over what we can do to that freshman string bean QB. Who knows what this hurricane might do if it hits Florida. If it goes up the west coast to the panhandle the game might have to be cancelled because Tallahassee could be a mess. That game would probably have to be rescheduled. I doubt that they want to cancel our most important rivalry game.

You mean to tell me I YouTube'd Ark state vs. NEB for no reason. Darn.

if you think people are mad now wait til the FSU is game is canceled. Which seems like a virtual lock at this point.

It wouldn't be cancelled, as we share an open date.

It very well could be rescheduled for that date though

Not our problem. Just like those jackasses in Jonesboro are saying Irma isn't their problem

This!

Blake James just threw away any chance we had to beat FSU

Not much you can do to convince people who have never lived through Andrew (or something like it) that this is a big deal, and more than just overdramatized fear-mongering. There is a **** of a lot an able-bodied 18-23 yr old can do to help his family with storm prep, from boarding up windows, handling heavy equipment, moving important items to higher ground and helping their neighbors.

You don't huddle in a corner and cry for days waiting for Irma to arrive. You bust your *** knowing your preparations could save your family, neighborhood and friends. That's a higher calling for those of you who've got your priorities twisted and think football shouldn't take a backseat this week.

If UM football truly represents the city of Miami - then let our men defend and protect home like real men do.

They better be prepared and they better beat FSU, talking like that. I don't think many fans will be supporting their decision to skip practices and tune-up games if they show up in Tallahassee and they don't look ready to play.

I know this fanbase. They'll be ****ed... and they'll turn on those guys.

If we lose to FSU again when the game has been basically giftwrapped for us... this fanbase will lose their collective ****.

And NOBODY is going to accept "clouds," in whatever form they come, as an excuse.

Oh, an internet tough guy.
Shut your stupid trap and stop speaking for "all" fans.

Yea but you want the players to leave their kids behind n go play football right . Makes sense

And you want them to go home and hug their mommies.

Tell me, do you care if they practice at all this week, or would you want them to have the whole week off to be with family?
I want them with their family **** football you ****in idiot

You're not worth talking with. You're obviously some kind of mommas boy, and not really a Canes fan.

I don't think football is your sport.

Lmao you got to be the dumbest mf on this board

Not only the dumbest, but someone with no concept of family.

To all of you putting football ahead of safety, I sincerely hope your homes are destroyed

Great move. That was the only logical move. Likewise the Dolphin game canceled also. Football means nothing right now.

As always, situational awareness is not exactly a specialty of the masses. Last time I was here a couple of days ago we had loud mouth geniuses posting that Irma departs Miami on Saturday so no problem resuming normal practice schedule for Florida State on Sunday.

Oh sure. That's the real world. We'll traipse over all the downed trees and destroyed homes and damage in the tens of billions because we can't wait to practice our next brilliant screen pass or route scheme.

You actually had Dolphins players like Jarvis Landry whining that he didn't want to cancel the Tampa Bay game because it meant losing a bye week in November. People are going to die in Irma and Landry cares about his precious bye week, so he can take more pictures out on a boat, or whatever.

Let's hope Irma jogs just enough east for football to mean anything at all within the next month or more.

These guys are going to spend all week worried about their mamas and their brothers and their sisters and cousins and buddies.... they'll be thinking about everything except for football.

Maybe that goes for the coaches as well, to an extent.

Would have been better to get everyone out of town away from the chaos.
Yeah....now they can just suffer with them. Definitely a better option

Just an interested observer from a B1G school and it is pretty disappointing seeing a couple of the comments in this thread and the hundreds on Twitter.

What's disappointing is their cowardly AD cancelling a road game and forcing the team to stay home in a category 5 hurricane. Every other team from Florida is playing their road game, so why did they cancel?"

they bring up some good points though, I don't get this decision

You don't get it because it's not your parents and kids you're leaving behind to go play a game

We signed up to play LSU in 2018. UF in Orlando (2019). And we just signed up to play Bama in 2021.

Yeah, apparently we're scared to play Ark. St.
We might cancel those too though

This is an exceedingly dumb move that will set us up for a poor season. The smart move would've been to play the game and then practice in Atlanta if need be. By staying, we actually hurt our chances of beating FSU because there's no guarantee we are even able to practice next week pending the outcome of the storm.
100% correct

Arkansas state fans do have every right to be upset because in all honesty it does look like we're ducking them. FIU and fau are both playing this week. The ASU A.D just said he would do anything to accommodate us but we refused. Oh well we're on to FSU at least now they do not have much tape on us

Yeah, let's give them 3 more weeks to get their new QB broken in, and then let's play Georgia Tech on a short week.

are you from miami? live in miami? this is a life threatening storm and these kids have families in miami. that is more important (being with them, getting back to them) than a football game. you can't expect kids to leave their families behind with no assurance of getting back to them before the storm hits or even after the storm.
