Coley's burden

At some point this weekend, the Jaguars will pick Jedd Fisch’s quarterback for him. Fisch will have some input, sure. But his main focus will be doing what he does best: developing his quarterback and calling plays.

Unfortunately for James Coley, Fisch already picked Miami’s quarterbacks. And now the Canes are facing the very real prospect of a true freshman starting under center.

In two years, Miami signed four quarterbacks. Preston Dewey and David Thompson are no longer with the team. Gray Crow is a non-factor. And there is a growing belief that Kevin Olsen is not the guy. Duke Johnson’s injury derailed the 2013 season and exposed a stunning lack of depth at the position. Ryan Williams’ injury threatens to do the same thing this year.

Al Golden is no stranger to quarterback dilemmas. His Temple teams finished an average of 76th in the nation in quarterback rating. Golden’s inherited QBs at Miami fared much better, finishing an average of 29[SUP]th[/SUP] in the nation. Those guys have since moved on, and now Fisch’s folly is Coley’s burden.

Coley brought in two smart, strong-armed kids in Brad Kaaya and Malik Rosier to fix the problem. My educated guess is that one of them will start. There will be growing pains. I just hope Coach Golden shows as much patience with Coley as he has shown with other assistant coaches.

Jameis Winston, Jacob Coker, Clintt Trickett all came and went during Coley's tenure at FSU. Not a bad resume.

Jimbo taught them boys and personally recruited each one

So Coley had nothing to do with any of the QBs at FSU during his tenure there? Riiiiiiight.

Coley was the recruiting coordinator/ "QB coach" for one season, and then the TE coach.

his primary job was to script the offense for practices.

His job on game days was to sit upstairs with the graduate assistants and tell Fisher what the defense was doing, while WR coach Lawrence Dawsey had more input on play calling than Coley.

There was a reason Coley's role was limited at FSU, And it wasn't because Fisher is a "control Freak", QB coach Randy Sanders took over many of Fishers duties this past season. Things that Fisher didn't feel comfortable delegating to Coley.

Coley has zero experience developing QBs. Other than what he has picked up from working with Fisher.

Fisch > Coley... he got a ton out of Jacory and Morris... Coley hasn't shown us anything as of yet..

And maybe we can wait til after Olsen takes one collegiate snap before writing him off?

Freshman making mental mistakes is par for the course. Nobody should get upset when he misreads a defense and chucks a ball late in triple coverage on his 3rd or 4th read...that's the type of mistakes you see from a first year, straight-outta-high-school starter.

What concerns me about Olsen his accuracy, or better yet...lack therof. I was actually pleasantly surprised watching him this spring from the standpoint of him actually making the right reads and at least consistently throwing to a guy that was single covered...or running free through a zone.

The problem arose after the read.....I saw him sail a ton of passes...and usually high. Could be a mechanical thing, could be a timing thing....could be correctable.

But I'll say this, in all my years of watching football I would lean toward saying that accuracy (or lack thereof) to a QB is like luggage. They tend to keep that **** forever.

Going back to Coley for a second....I've been on record since last year as saying I don't think he's a good OC. I think he's got a future as a COACH....just not calling offensive plays. The only difference between the scheme/play calling/route combinations we saw from Coley's offense last year as opposed to the now infamous Patrick Nix .....was the fact Coley is a **** of a recruiter. If we're honest and remove recruiting from the equation A LOT more people would have been calling for Coley's head.

And since we're all being honest let's take it a step further...if it wasn't for the fact that we currently have one of the worst defensive coordinators in all of college football Coley would also be getting a lot more negative attention. I'd be willing to bet Coley is one of Onfrio's biggest fans.....him being around keeps attention away from the offense.

Lmao, most OC that walk into a new gig. Never get to see their guy take the field. They are either fired, our move on to greener pastures by then.

Most coaches are working with other guys ingredients on both the college and pro level. Why does Coley need special treatment? Is he not the only college coach. That has groomed Olsen up to this point? Does Olsen throw footballs with his feet. That causes it too be extra difficult for Coley to get the best out of him?

Steep curve for whichever Q wins the job. Line calls, pre snap reads, audibles, etc. Hard to tell where they each stand on these mental aspects of the game.

Blame last year's results on injuries. This year the play calls and qb play are all on Coley. No place to hide.

Really, if nothing else, this season ought to be the one for Coley to prove himself. Solid O-Line, a fresh QB that no one else has coached (save for what little Crow/Olsen had w/Fisch), excellent playmakers at TE/WR/RB. Depth at about every position except RB.

If he can't shine this year with a QB he's groomed, and talent all over the rest of the field on O, then he needs to get just as much criticism as NoDFrio. More, really, IMO--because all of the pieces are there to succeed and put up big numbers. There's more talent on O than on D (though I think the D's talent level is catching up a bit via recruiting).

Fisch is in the NFL for a reason yea he couldnt recruit but hes a better coach...Coley is a recruiting beast but I doubt hes on Fisch's level football IQ wise…Now in college you can get away with having less elite x's and o's guys but you better be able to bring in elite talent which is what I believe goldens sole reason for bringing in coley

I like Fisch and think he is a good coach but Morris was the exact same QB under him that he was under Coley. Morris just had his best games to end the year under Fisch so that masked his deficiencies as a QB.

Nobody was worrying about QB development or play calling when he left. People were worried about south Florida recruiting.

Only an idiot would think Coley played a role in developing QBs at FSU.

Not sure how a TE coach that scripted practices somehow developed Ponder, EJ, or Wimston.

QBs were never talking to Coley during games or sitting down with him in meetings. QBs were always solely Fishers job until Sanders came in last season.

It really is a bit ridiculous that people keep touting what Fisch did with Morris when he was still completing under 60% of his passes and had 12 TD and 7 picks before he llt up UVA,USF and old school Duke to end the year. For all of Fisch's route concepts and pleasing to the eye football ****, Morris still wasn't good. Morris didn't throw over the middle of the field last year too. So when that happens for two different OCs who is the problem?

I gotta admit I'm no fan of Coley's offense, high schoolish, or his play calling, not strategic! The timing and execution of his plays is not crisp nor does his offense have a good pace. He seems good at identifying QB talent, but development remains to be seen.
