I wonder if Chick could make the move inside a bit more.

This guy. McCord. If a few of the redshirts step up with Hamilton...

All of a suddenly, DE is crowded.

They need to make plays before it gets crowded. As crazy as it may sound on the board, Chick enters this spring as our clear-cut best DE. Without him, we look like a prep school team at the position.

Agreed. Hence my 'if.' We saw a little something from TM last year. We know what Chick can do (set the edge, hustle). If any of the new kids step up, we have an honest to god rotation. I love Green's dedication, but the kid is hardly a warm body. Need playmakers. Someone who's marginally a threat, at the very least.

I think the real comparison that people are going to have to make is between AQM and Figueroa. I think those two are going to battle it out for snaps and whoever is the odd man out, will shirt.

Have you seen that Figueroa will be a DE for sure?

I don't think either of them will be exclusive "hand in the dirt" guys. Both of them will play a hybrid role, even after they put on some weight.

Am i the only 1 that hates the hybrid ****? I really have no idea wut they want this d to eventually look like. So many tweeners. No NT's.

I think were forced to call them tweeners cause we are forced to play them before they are ready. McCord in a perfect world would have taken a RS then probably played garbage time in year 2. By year 3 he is 245-250lbs and nobody is calling him a tweener.

This. Right now its a jaggle-fest. When a few playmakers emerge, then we can talk as if we have depth. Green had ZERO sacks this year from his DE position, and while Chick is a great kid, its clear he was thrown to the fire too early and his lack of athleticism lowers his ceiling. Its still a problem position, as are the DT spots.

We had arguably the worst D in D1 last year and it all started on the DL. A kid as talented as Muhammid would have a great shot at being in the rotation from day 1. Chances our he very well has the talent to be a 3 and done kid with the premium the league puts on pash rushers. Golden told the kid already he's going to be a star wherever he goes to school. I don't believe he is blowing smoke.

It's been a long time since we have seen a difference maker coming off the edge at Miami who has been consistently productive. These guys can impact games like no others - watching LSU play last night reminded how important a couple bookend stud DE's can be to a defense.

All I know is that we need someone to be good enough to eat up Shayon's minutes. He's got zero business playing DE at this level and especially being axed to play the minutes he played last year.

Definitely hope that Green is not playing near starter's minutes next season. He should also really never be in on passing downs. IMO he should backup Chick as primarily SDE. Regardless of his size, he is strong at the point of attack and can do alright at stopping the run. But, I'm really hoping that McCord (gains good size without losing athleticism) and Jelani Hamilton (get stronger and more explosive) develop enough physically to make Green 4th in the DE rotation (at best)

I agree.

I don't know what it is but Chick needs to get in better shape. Not sure if that means lose 20 pounds and get incredibly lean at around 245-250 pounds or just improve his conditioning at 265-270. Something didn't look right last year, maybe he was injured or maybe it was his conditioning.

Chick will be fine at his weight this year. He doesn't need to drop anything he just needs to adjust to the added weight. We packed the pounds on him and played him every **** snap of the season. Not always a great combo, also giving him zero help along the way. His performance in the GT game showed the added strength should be a plus down the road.

He is the type of kid who is going to have a really really good senior season.

He may not be a starter, but I don't see how a guy like Bond has a significant advantage over him. Isn't AQM bigger?

All things being equal (size, speed etc.) the guy EE and is older [Bond] usually has the advantage over the true freshman [AQM]. The thing is nothing is equal and no time is guaranteed at DE next season. A freshman has as much change as a Rd-Sr to play.

If AQM is legit and willing to work, he will get burn early...a lot of burn.

I don't see why being older is a *significant* advantage. If he were older and weighed more and had a MUCH deeper understanding of what we're trying to do (schematically), I'd concede.

I tend to agree with you that there won't be very much of an advantage. If Bond plays a lot more than AQM, it's because he beat him out on effectiveness.

My point is EE is the advantage, learning the playbook and getting in Utough is the advantage.

As for being older and coming from JUCO (Footnote 1) that may be an advantage. The experience coming from JUCO (better competition) and the game played at a higher level (JUCO v. HS) is an advantage IMO. For some reason kids don't do well on the line (undersized, not ready for the game, not in shape etc.) and elders do a lot better (more physically ready, better shape, more experience).

By the way great clarifier "*significant*"...it is an advantage (IMO) to what degree, don't know?

I am not here to debate age, but for some reason age and experience is helpful for a team.

(Footnote 1: Remember people in JUCO leave JUCO older than HS Players)

All fair points. Probably also important to consider that, at least in my opinion, we're going to be pretty good or at least extremely competitive next year. That means a guy like Bond (for the reasons you state) who may have a slight advantage over AQM would get the nod because it affects the bottom line (wins and losses) moreso than, say, this season (2012).

Great point Lu. I too think you will see the rotations shrink in 2013 bc the coaches think they can be really good next year. I think this year they wanted to get as many guy experience as they could because they knew it was going to be bad regardless. Was a chance to build depth and get a bunch of guys on tape.

super pumped about the rumors and the "insider info" regarding AQM. This would be a HUGE HUGE HUGE get. Think about it this way, with this kid announcing a final 3 of us and the 2 teams in the BCS national championship, along with the fact that he is the number 4 DE in the country, and number 2 prospect out of NJ this year, really says something about Al Golden and the rest of our staff.

Like al golden said in his into presser, people need to lose our sense of inferiority, and it looks like that is coming to fruition. The fact that we are in the top 3 with this with bama and nd, the two best teams in the country shows that kids believe theres something special brewing down here in south florida. so pumped about the rumor, but again, its so hard to believe it until i see it, and most importantly he signs the dotted line on national signing day.

That being said, if we are lucky enough to land this kid, I'm super pumped to see what he can do opposite of Chick during Chick's senior year (assuming he bounces back and becomes a stud) as well as McCord who I really think is going to be a freakin beast before he's done here. Gabe Terry has promise and Bond is going to be a great pass rusher. It looks like our problems of getting pressure on the QB are quickly coming to an end within the next year or two.

If we land Thomas as well, assuming we get Grace and retain Artie and Jamal, this is a great, great defensive minded class. With Olsen and hopefully we land Collins or Green (longshot) we hit a lot of positions of need here and were gifted enough to get an unreal TE who is ready to be dropped right in to our #1/#2 spot. Thats remarkable. This could be a special year boys, and I can almost guarantee (pending good QB play) its only gonna get better as time goes on.

Lets get em yo

Unless something drastic changes between now and Saturday, I expect Alquadin Muhammad to throw up the U on national television.

Can he play DT?

No, he is a DE/OLB. Sarcasm?

Definitely.

Although as Lu said above I would think it does lesson the sting of not getting Bryant.

the question I have is what do you get with bryant? Huge question mark at this point. seems to have under performed senior yr. rumors are he could be lazy, plus he could be a little bit of a diva. If he signs I dnt think he contributes right away .. all that said, Hope the kid puts in the work and shines at the U

We know he has the ability to be a stud but the laziness is getting in the way. He needs the right push by the coaches to really succeed at the next level or he'll end up just another avg. DT. IMO he would get some burn next year because of that ability and the basis that we would get him in shape to make some plays. It all comes down to Bryant putting in the work though and not coasting like he has, will he though? That is a question mark to me.

I'm skeptical til it happens, but this is an absolutely gigantic pull if it happens. If he and McCord pan out, our secondary will finally have a chance to survive and we can get more creative.
