Your thoughts on Randy Shannon as UCF Head Coach

Your assessment of Randy is pretty accurate with the major exceptions being his prowess as a recruiter and that his defense came under fire because we became predictable and reactionary. However, most Canes would take that defense over the defense our current DC installed everyday of the week and twice on Saturdays.

Randy was not ready to be an HC when given the job at UM. That was a terrible administrative decision. He had only worked at UM. He needed experience working at different programs under different coaches to see how different administrations and different staffs work at other places. He has that experience now. I would think after failing at his alma mater he is hungry to show that he's a better coach than he was the first go round. So, I do hope you guys give him a shot. Good luck to him.

Friends, I come to you in peace. As you may or may not be aware, UCF is giving serious consideration to Randy Shannon as Head Coach. What were your thoughts on his coaching abilities during his tenure at UM? What kind of program did he inherit? What were his strengths and weaknesses? Here are some comments I have already attained from Canes fans:

GOOD

* Great recruiter for the 305 and Florida in general
* Had some great defenses

BAD
* Too much of a players coach
* Teams were unprepared strategically and physically for games. Didn't develop talent very well

Overrated as a DC, but adequate in that regard. He's the polar opposite of 'Onfrio who plays zone almost exclusively...Shannon is a pure man under, cover 2 guy...on every down...for better or worse. His defenses are highly susceptible to crossing routes and running quarterbacks. TE's tend to run free as well.

He's a God awful abomination head coach though. Has zero understanding of clock management and gameday decisions. He's not the type of guy that makes quick decisions on the fly, on his feet

In theory...if you can get him CHEAP as a figurehead HC and then surround him with two OUTSTANDING coordinators....it could work, but then again if you give pretty much any HC two great coordinators, it would work.

Unfortunately, he hasn't shown much vision in terms of picking coordinators either, so there's goes that idea.

For a program like UCF, which I'm sorry if this offends you but it's true, will never be a national player....Shannon I guess could be an decent hire if you take the choice of the coordinators out of his hands and make sure you hit on those.

I do wish the man well, but run and run fast. I dislike saying that, but it's the unfortunate truth. What's even scarier than him being hired is the idea of him filling his staff. Again no disrespect, but I'd have to question the sanity of someone going to work under him. If need be though, he can have the remainder of ours.

Too sum it up. If Randy has better connections with offensive coordinators across the country... He will be fine. His biggest issue was getting offensive coordinators. Randy didn't have the pull to get any goodies to work for him. Now that he has coached around a few gigs in sure he can do much better. If Randy Shannon had jedd fisch we would have been won the acc. Randy has a lot of talent playing I the NFL that didn't go shid here. He def has a goof eye for talent.

Not perfect.. Buy not a terrible al golden type coach.

Randy is too smart not too learn and change.

You will get a name well known in South Florida and a decent recruiter. How much his coaching journey improved his access and choice of good assistants and his general coaching skills is yet to be determined. You will take a risk there. He could be smarter and much better second time around or he could be the same.

One thing for sure, the pressure on him at UCF is not the same one he had at Miami and now he "SHOULD" be a better coach. You never know.

People need to understand that Randy wasn't ready to be the head guy at this program but you would be a fool to turn it down. He made many mistakes and didn't have the rolodex of coaches to turn too. Wasn't his fault the clowns running **** at Miami offered the job to him.

He has left the nest, is older now and has had time to sit back and think if he could do things different. I would be interested in seeing him get another chance somewhere. He maybe the same cat and tank it at said program, but hopefully he has grown and maybe he won't get stuck with a **** upper management team again if he does.

+1 Randy is about as orange & green as you can get. I hope he does well.

He was terrific at alienating some of the main high schools around here, completely ignoring miami central. had basically no visits lined up his last year here so you found a terrific quitter to hire.

Prepare your self for:

-guys "flying around" in practice, every practice
-repeatedly hearing "It's like anything"
-players getting "nicked"
-at least two consecutive recruiting class where one position does not get recruited - i.e. QB
-no defensive back will be recruited unless he is 6'5"
-hope you never play Duke - he finds that stadium very intimidating

Also likes to recruit lbs cut out of his own mold. Relatively slow, unathletic , but "overachievers". Guys that will grab unto your hand warmers to bring you down if they have to.

I think it is orange and blue now.

I agree what just about everything in this thread said about Randy. Whats really ****ed up is after all of his many faults.
Randy>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Al Golden.

Randy's shortcomings as a HC are still his shortcomings. I don't think anyone thought the guy didn't know his X's and O's. Just because it's a "smaller program" doesn't mean he will do better. In fact, I almost think at a smaller school like that you kinda need to be more flexible and nimble....I think he found his place.

better defensive coach by far and if you told me I had to pick one guy to coach 1 game, I'd choose Onion. But as an overall head coach tasked with building a team, roster and all that other crap I might pick Golden....Christ...I don't know. Can I just punt?

The thing with Shannon is that he doesn't bring anything special to the table.
Not a great recruiter, not a defensive/offensive genius, not innovative..
I would think at a place like UCF with the way college football is headed, they would want an offensive minded coach that can take advantage of the Florida talent.
There are to many quality coaches available for UCF to settle on Randy. Major draw back if they do.

Wasn't ready to be a head coach. He might be ready now for somebody like FIU or FAU but IMO he's better off just focusing on being a defensive coordinator.

At the time of UM, his pedigree was only UM and the Coker coaching tree, so he was not capable of purging bad habits due to lack of experience. He's since diversified with gigs at Arkansas and TCU, as well as UF. That has got to count for something, yes?

We need a solid recruiter. Are you guys for real that he was a mediocre recruiter? He out-recruited Golden statistically, but I know stats can sometimes be deceiving.

Not sure if mentioned but his best recruiting class was in 2008 i believe. It is a little skewed however because that was the year a Miami high school, Miami Northwestern was an absolute monster and basically all of the 4* and 5* players stuck together and chose UM.
