Your thoughts on Randy Shannon as UCF Head Coach

People need to understand that Randy wasn't ready to be the head guy at this program but you would be a fool to turn it down. He made many mistakes and didn't have the rolodex of coaches to turn too. Wasn't his fault the clowns running **** at Miami offered the job to him.

He has left the nest, is older now and has had time to sit back and think if he could do things different. I would be interested in seeing him get another chance somewhere. He maybe the same cat and tank it at said program, but hopefully he has grown and maybe he won't get stuck with a **** upper management team again if he does.

Don't pay attention to these guys. Randy will be a fine coach for UCF. Miami is way to hard a place for him and most coaches. He is fine for Orlando.

Randy Shannon fielded the last good defense we've had at UM. None of this slow off the ball...****y bumpin'...patty cake **** that's been on display since Golden's ****got *** took over.

2010 Defense:

115 TFL
37 Sacks

I agree with this. Living here in Cen. FL, UCF would be well served by Randy. I do think his recruiting acumen is exaggerated (he shoulda recruited Miami Central HS to say the least when Freeman was there). He knows Florida and recruited the Cent. FL area pretty good when he was at UM (Boone HS, Dr. Philips, Seminole HS, others).

That said, I think UCF has the 'clout' to attract a bigger name. Current annual enrollment of 50,000+ ...this is a big big school. It has money to spend. It's sports facilities are nice (basketball, baseball, football, practice fields, etc). But it doesn't surprise me they're thinking somewhat 'small.'

Sigh. Randy Shannon gets a bad rap for what was, in essence, all Shalala's doing. A friend of mine grew with Randy and they are very close; he would be on the sidelines for many of the games that Randy coached. I was shocked when he first told me that Randy never had any aspirations to be a head coach. Randy was asked to be the coach by Donna Shalala.

I wish I could find that old Hurricanes Gameday footage when Joe Z asked Randy when did he decide to be a head coach. RS replied "I didn't, I became the head coach because they asked me to," or something to that effect; he was fired shortly after exposing Shalala.

Randy was completely unprepared to be a head coach in general, and definitely not ready to be the HC of UM. He still proved to be a better head coach than Al Golden and that guy had a mentor, head coaching experience and wrote a 300 page book on the subject.
Go figure.

i thought his recruiting was pretty mediocre.. he defenses were terrible too, considering he's supposedly a defensive "guru".. his defenses were at their best with other people's players.. (namely, Butch's)

His 2005 defense was top 5 in the country. His 2006 was top 10. Neither had Butch's players.

As a HC he was a complete clusterfvck, but as a DC he only had one season outside the top 10.
as an HC, which is what the thread is about.. his defenses sucked.

"His defenses were at their best with other peoples players (namely, Butch's)" implies that Butch Davis was responsible for the 2005 and 2006 top 10 defenses. I just wanted to clarify that this is NOT the case, as it seems BBB fanatics want to attribute every single Miami success to Botch.

meh.. i'm not the fanatical BBB guy.. shannon's first four defenses were built off the back of what butch built.. 05-06 we were still riding high from the 01 and 02 seasons with regards to recruiting.. nick saban puts out a good defense because that's what nick saban does.. randy shannon has done that as well.. but not when he had the opportunity to do that as HC

Shannon was an unmitigated disaster as HC. About the only thing he did well was recruit MNW in 2007. Not sure why our fans seem so intent of making it a "who was worse" contest between Shannon and Golden. They were both horrible in their own way.

Freeman was a phuckin' pu$$y. He stole on one of our players in the 2013 game, and He was chokin' out one of our players at the bottom of a pile in 2011...*****!...HIM!

doesn't change the fact that Randy (and our staff) shoulda recruited Miami Central

LSL exposed that top defense for what it really was. They played two decent teams all year and they both put up points.

In 2006 his D got exposed a number of times. In fact, any time they played a talented team his D got exposed. Those rankings are useless without considering who they played.

He is an awful coach and was never a good DC.

Well we ended up getting Thomas Finnie, didn't we?...how did that turn out?
Randy kept tabs on kids, said so Himself, that's probably why He didn't recruit Finnie.

True. We did get Finnie. But our school had ZERO communication and relationship with Cook. That's why he committed to uf and then fsu. We barely signed Yearby from there.

Randy has his recruiting moments, but one of them was not keeping up with a school so close to home. He shoulda done better. He'd be well served, if at ucf, to create and keep Cent. FL talent at that school.

About the only kid we probably missed out on at Central, was the CB that ended up at Louisville, forget His name. Besides that, who are ya'll mad at that Randy didn't land...

Jose Jose?...LMFAO!

Todd Chandler...double LMFAO!

Cool man. Agree to disagree then I guess. I won't defend Randy (and staff) not recruiting Central.

Fair enough sir. And I thought we missed on Freeman also...but after witnessing that crap He did in 2011 & 13', I'm glad He didn't come to UM...Randy probably saw the coochie in em' also.

She is so incompetent

In all fairness to Randy, Shalala and Dee were too cheap to pay for assistants or anything else for that matter, so I dont think he had a fair shake. Having said that, I think he is a great coordinator, unproven head coach.
