Your thoughts on Randy Shannon as UCF Head Coach

Friends, I come to you in peace. As you may or may not be aware, UCF is giving serious consideration to Randy Shannon as Head Coach. What were your thoughts on his coaching abilities during his tenure at UM? What kind of program did he inherit? What were his strengths and weaknesses? Here are some comments I have already attained from Canes fans:


GOOD

* Great recruiter for the 305 and Florida in general
* Had some great defenses

BAD
* Too much of a players coach
* Teams were unprepared strategically and physically for games. Didn't develop talent very well

Wish him nothing but the best. He's a Cane alum, was a long time member of our staff and just wasn't the right fit nor qualified to lead our program. Hope he gets it
 
He is a mediocre coach and recruiter. He recruited well when he was newly appointed but once the team started sucking and people started seeing the losses mount up the recruits stopped coming and he quit. Has no personality, but his players like him.

I don't think he's the type of guy who would win at UCF. He's just not a head coach. Always had solid defenses but just doesn't have what it takes.

His ability to recruit was largely overblown. He was an average recruiter while here and most of the time he was assigned kids in the sofla area - i.e. low hanging fruit.

Biggest issue with Randy is that he is intractable and was very slow to adjust his approach to games and in-game. He's a hard nosed guy that is better suited to be a DC, imo.
 
UCF can and should do better. They should get Meacham or one of these rising assistants. Florida schools don't need a guy with Florida ties, thats what assistant coaches are for. Get a solid Xs and Os guy and the rest falls into place.

As for Randy, God love em, but he was not a good coach, got lazy with recruiting. He had his first year bump and it was all downhill after that. His staff wasn't too bad IMO, it was much better than Golden's. His player development also left a lot to be desired. He would have you at 8 or 9 wins per season.

Good luck, but you guys should be clamoring for either a rising assistant like Meacham or Michigan's DC or get one of these DII coaches that are doing well.

True but Nix was choice number 12391827 after everyone else said "no thanks". His inability to field a competent staff was glaring. And if he did hire somebody competent, he'd usually be at odds with them.

He's good at producing the lulz during his press conferences.

I think his staff were better than most think at least from what I remember. Stoutland, his OC after Nix (he was ok not too bad), a couple others that actually went on to do well. I think it was much better than Golden's staff.

Shannon couldn't get us to 8/9 wins a season, no chance he can do that at UCF, regardless of schedule.

The guy had a 275 pound TE returning kicks.

This is the story of all coaches who can't win quickly. Al Golden. Happened to Butch at UNC.

Wish Randy well. Let's just say he is a very good LB coach!!

Randy had his problems here, he was a first time head coach that was on the hot seat since the day he was hired. He did not have much support from the admin in terms of resources. He was arrogant, and did not learn much. He did however make changes to his staff unlike Golden. I think he will be much better the second time around, if UCF hire Shannon they will have a better version of him.

****, you right. Especially with the caliber of coaches in the AAC. UCF would be a perennial bottom dweller.
 
At the time of UM, his pedigree was only UM and the Coker coaching tree, so he was not capable of purging bad habits due to lack of experience. He's since diversified with gigs at Arkansas and TCU, as well as UF. That has got to count for something, yes?

We need a solid recruiter. Are you guys for real that he was a mediocre recruiter? He out-recruited Golden statistically, but I know stats can sometimes be deceiving.
