Worst set of DE’s since Manny has been here..

On paper at least.

I was listening to podcast Lake and Ivins said this.

2016-Chad Thomas/ Joe Jackson
2017-Chad Thomas/Jackson/ Harris
2018-Joe Jackson/Jon Garvin
2019-Greg Rousseau/Jon Garvin
2020-Roche/Phillips

They are not wrong on paper at least.

I do think Deandre can be more effective here in this scheme than Tennessee.

I also expect Harvey and Williams to make a jump in their 3rd year.

thoughts? I’m thinking Jess can maximize this group I also think the DTs can help.
Don't forget about Chantz Williams.

Neither Ivins nor Lake know anything about Football.

Harvey is set to be the next up that will breakout the same way Garvin & Rousseau did after they became the full time starters. People just don’t seem to understand that eventually you have to develop talent, which means sometimes guys who haven’t played a lot will be put in a position where they will play a lot & when you’ve seen over the last 4 years is nothing but good productivity at DE, then it’s pretty clear the system we run is conducive to having guys step up & maximize their ability.

Jahfari had 4.5TFL’s last year all while not logging more than 20 snaps a game until the OK State game. GUARANTEE he will have 10-15TFL’s, again the system creates productivity along the line because of the style of play with the DL’s focus mainly being predicated on getting upfield vertically & stunting heavy between the gaps.

We also have a ton of Depth, Jahfari Harvey, Deandre Johnson, Cam Williams, Elijah Roberts, Chantz Williams, Jason Blissett, Quentin Williams, Jared Harrison-Hunte, Nesta Silvera, Jon Ford, Jordan Miller, Jalar Holley, Leonard Taylor, Jabari Ishmael, Thomas Davis & Allan Haye (although I don’t think the TF’s will play that much if at all), plus Zach McCloud is supposed to be moving to DE as well this season.

We have more than enough players who can get the job done.

Ivins is the worst. He doesn’t think Stevenson can play outside. He thinks he’s a nickel corner. He also prefers Jakai Clark over Donaldson. Take nothing he says seriously.

So to be clear, the 2 ends from last season will be first round and second round NFL picks and I’m supposed to feel like we are good because we have a lot of guys named Williams at DE?
Yeah why not. Back in the day we lost all those studs and you would be like "who is this?"...The next stud aka "next one up".

Much better than last year & around the same level as 2018.

I’m not going to lie, this surprises me, and I’m saying this because I respect your opinion. I’m just reticent on our ends, obviously we will either stay the same or improve at tackle, but maybe I’m just looking at it from a “flash“ standpoint with respect to the ends

So true Liberty. Out of all those names 3-4 are going to eat buffet style at minimum in 2021. Probably more like 5-6 honestly. I think Chantz/Cam Williams plus Harvey and Johnson will be a nice 2-deep rotation at DE. Then JHH, Nesta, Elijah, Ford/Miller make a very nice 2-deep at DT. And that’s not, to your point, having any of the frosh in Jabari nor Leonard playing that much to preserve their development for 2022 and beyond. That leaves a lot of players still who can surprise completely across the DL front. Someone’s going to pop out from the remaining group and become a pleasant addition.

It’s America , you can feel however you want to. I feel just fine about the unit. Agree to disagree friend.
Fair enough. People are always talking about the next man in with great hope that next year is the year. GR15 kind of came out of no where so maybe one of our many Williams can do the same. That said the whispers of what a freak JP15 was were very loud and QR was a guy that had shown production on the field. We don’t have that IMO. Hopefully someone bursts out. I liked the flashes I saw from Cam early on but he seemed to slow down a little as the season progressed.

then again I’m a moron so I’m likely wrong.

People are sleeping on Deandre in this system with his hand in the dirt. The staff absolutely loves him and were excited as **** we he told them he was coming. I guarantee he doubles his sacks here......at minimum.

So doubling puts him at 9 sacks for the year, one more than Phillips. That would be a nice start for the new DE rotation.
You think DeAndre starts? There was some talk of a 'specialist' role, doesn't seem to fit the staff's excitement level. Team politics?

Did he actually say both of those things?

Yes. The Donaldson thing on the podcast they just dropped and the Stevenson on the one they dropped when Stevenson announced the transfer. They’re podcast is decent but he has some crazy takes.

It's actually the opposite. You shouldn't mope because we lost first and second round NFL picks at DE. Jess will get those guys right, and we've got plenty of young talent to step in and step up.

I'm not worried about DL at all.

No reason to think we shouldn't improve at tackle with everyone coming back and a better technician coaching them.

I know it’s cool to call people a mope if they are anything but overwhelmingly positive.

you are not worried because you think Jess is the truth. He has not shown that, but that may be the case and I happen to think he will be a true technician as a coach. So I may agree there.

you are also not worried because we have “plenty of young talent”. In my opinion what we have is a lot of potential. In the NFL potential is what gets people fired. I know this isn’t the NFL but I’d feel a lot better if some of that potential was previous production.

I’m optimistic but concerned if that makes any sense.

Ivins has some terrible takes for sure, doesn’t know much football I just thought it was interesting topic.

Doesn’t like Donaldson at guard, even though PFF ranked him our best OL in 2019. Think Stevenson is a slot CB, even though he transferred to Miami so he wouldn’t be a slot CB, keeps hyping up Lashlee to UCF, thinks Miami should only sign 17-18 high schoolers per year to hold 7 spots for transfers moving forward.
