Worse power 5 coaches than Shannon and golden

Actually Shannon is a better coach than what you are putting out there. He excelled at each position he coached as an assistant and DC. He was one of the top available hires as a DC in the country before getting the HC position at Miami. After only receiving a 4 yr contract for 4 mil and nothing to pay Top Tier OC's and DC's, today one wouldn't be surprised by the results. But one would have to assume the success he would have had if given the money to hire coordinators. Randy consistently brought in recruiting classes ranked in the top 25. Three members of his second recruiting class—Marcus Forston, Marcus Robinson, and Sean Spence—were recognized by College Football News as freshman All-Americans.

On January 5, 2015, the University of Florida announced that the Florida Gators' new head coach Jim McElwain had hired Shannon as the Gators' associate head coach, co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. McElwain stated that Shannon was at the top of his list for potential assistants, and media sports commentators opined that Shannon would be a significant recruiting asset for McElwain and the Gators.

Today we can admit that the last regime failed to develop the talent on those teams. Some day we will also admit that the Administration failed to pay for qualified Coordinators and Assistants so that Shannon could succeed. Truth be told, the Administration contributed a lot more money for Golden to be successful.

That's a flatout exaggeration, it was well known how many bridges shannon burnt during his recruiting days in miami and i'd challenge to look at his body of work regarding camps and not laugh. He'll get a few kids because he's from SFL and because he's a black coach (see teddy bridgewater) but he wouldn't even rank in the top 20 of coaches who recruit SFL.

There are no excuses for Randy he's a decent position coach and coordinator but he's not a HC at all. Name 1 thing he excelled at as a HC....or better yet name one coordinator under shannon that excelled. Part of a HC's job and contract negotiations is to inspire the Admin to spend on quality support staff, with the money he was given he could've at least afforded 1-2 solid hires. He was terrible at player development, terrible at recruiting (don't even mention his 1st class which was 80% failure), terrible at motivating players (see randy shannons doghouse), terrible at game management, and terrible at roster management (see the roster golden inherited).

And then there was the last game in orange bowl vs UVA....

Terrible at player development, terrible at recruiting???

Did i mention he ruined two Mr. Florida Football Qb's as well?

Harris came to University of Miami to compete for the starting quarterback position with former Mr. Florida award winner Robert Marve. Harris and Marve split time as starters, with Marve starting 11 of 13 games. Marve subsequently transferred out of Miami, leaving Harris the full-time starter heading into the 2009 season. During the 2008 season, Harris led Miami on two comeback drives against the Duke Blue Devils and the Virginia Cavaliers. Harris finished the season with 1,195 yards, 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions as the Hurricanes wound up 7-6.

In a July 31, 2009, interview with Dan Le Batard, Harris told the world that he will pick up his Heisman trophy wearing a pink suit and with a "pimp cup" in hand. He also earned himself a new nickname in this interview: Afro Butterfly.

Harris who is currently signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League.

How did he ruin two Mr. Football?

Randy played favorites and nudged Marve out the door so he could play a woefully underdeveloped physically and mentally QB in Jacory Harris. Did i mention he kept the athletic freak Tommy Streeter Jacory Harris teamate plastered to the bench his whole tenure. Another casualty of "randy's doghouse".

Randy Shannon was a bum. Just as bad as Golden. Make all the excuses you want. He burned a bunch of bridges with local high schools, played clear favorites with players and lost...a lot. The only reason he got a job was because the cheap *** administration wouldn't spend on a good coach.

But those days are over. The new president cares about football. The new coach is a proven winner. Everything is moving in the right direction.

There you have it... If the cheap *** Administration would not spend on the HC you know they didn't spend on quality assistants. End of story. Randy good coach with out the support of the Administration.

The current Administration has obviously learned from past mistakes and have graciously provided the funding needed to Right. Now you will see how proper funding equate to successful coaching and wins on the field.

Randy won more than 7 games once as a HC....they payed him accordingly.

Actually they way underpaid him. With only two picks in this years draft class which is one year after all of Randy's recruits are all gone. It is quit evident that you would have had been lucky to get two wins even from the cupcakes that we play every year with Golden's recruits.

Lol this is a joke Golden is the worst coach in hhistory, the end... He's much worse than Shannon.

Yall basically still defending Golden smh.... Golden has managed to achieve historical levels of failure that no other coach at UM has been able to accomplish no matter how bad they were.

Marve was 6–5 as a starter during the 2008 season, splitting his playing time with true freshman Jacory Harris. He started every game except the season opener against Charleston Southern, for which he was suspended as the result of Marve's arrest in Coconut Grove when he was charged with two misdemeanors – resisting arrest without violence and criminal mischief – after he punched and broke a car mirror then tried to elude police by running away. Marve finished the 2008 regular season with 9 passing touchdowns and 13 interceptions. He also had 1,293 passing yards on 116 completions on 213 attempts, for a passer rating of 107.19. Miami accepted a bowl bid to play California in the 2008 Emerald Bowl, but Marve did not play in the bowl after being suspended for academic reasons on December 18, 2008.

As a junior, Streeter led the Miami Hurricanes in receptions with 46, receiving yards with 811 and touchdowns with eight.

On December 5, 2011, Streeter announced that he would forgo his senior season and enter the 2012 NFL Draft. Streeter was drafted to the Baltimore Ravens in the sixth round, 198th Overall, of the 2012 NFL Draft.

When players adhered to Randy Shannon discipline they had success. I can't make this sht up.... The facts don't lie Randy Shannon knows how to develop and make talented players reach their greatest potential.

So far you've said he's good at recruiting and good at developing but he was 28-22 as a HC, never won a bowl game, So who's fault would that be...?

2007 Miami 5–7 2–6 5th (Coastal)
2008 Miami 7–6 4–4 T–3rd (Coastal) L Emerald
2009 Miami 9–4 5–3 3rd (Coastal) L Champs Sports
2010 Miami 7–5 5–3 2nd (Coastal) Fired before bowl

Next your going to tell me he bears no responsibility for allowing the proliferation of the shapiro scandal. I ******* hate apologist. Randy failed Miami in every facet as a HC with the exception of grades and reducing the "crime rate".

Darrell Hazell is far worse than Shannon or Golden were. 6-30 overall, 2-22 in the Big 10 and he's being allowed to return for 2016. Many on this board believe it's impossible for a coach to be worse than Golden but it actually is possible. Hazell might be the worst major conference coach since Paul Wulff.

Although maybe you have to wait one more season to make this judgement I believe Charlie Strong is worse than Golden as well. Although supposedly we were considering him as a replacement for Golden.

Hazell is 3-30 against FBS competition and 3-0 vs the FCS. Come on, nobody can argue that Golden or Shannon is anywhere close to as bad as him. Unless you're a really unreasonable Miami fan.

Next your going to tell me he bears no responsibility for allowing the proliferation of the shapiro scandal. I ****ing hate apologist. Randy failed Miami in every facet as a HC with the exception of grades and reducing the "crime rate".

In his second season in 2008, he guided the Hurricanes to the program's 34th overall bowl appearance at the 2008 Emerald Bowl. Miami finished the 2008 season 7-6 and 4-4 in the ACC which was just one game out of first place in the league.

McElwain said he received interest in joining his staff from coaches all over the country, including many he did not even know. Shannon's name came up immediately from the coaches McElwain knows best.

"Guys that I trust, guys that I have been in the rooms with, guys that I consider true friends that can and will tell me the truth recommended him and knew what a great person he is and how great he was for players," McElwain said. "And it was instant when I took this job. He was a guy that was at the top of my list from a standpoint of the people and how they speak about his integrity, his discipline and his organization and his ball coaching ability. The thing that gets lost, man, this guy is a great ball coach.
"I feel it was an unbelievable hire to be able to get that done."

McElwain said Shannon's head coaching experience will prove invaluable.

But the Hurricanes were unable to return to their glory years under Shannon, who was 28-22 during his time in Coral Gables. "Until you’ve sat in this chair, it’s really hard to understand all the things that come with it," Shannon has already helped me immensely on things and he’s a guy you can bounce ideas off. Not only football ideas, but organizational ideas."I can’t tell you how excited I am that he’s here."

Shannon will not serve as recruiting coordinator, McElwain said, but he undoubtedly will bring a lot of talent to UF. The Canes signed the nation’s No. 2 class in 2008, according to the rankings of 247Sports, and were among the top 20 classes every season under Shannon.
"I don't get into titles," McElwain said. "I never have."

As for Shannon's title of co-defensive coordinator, McElwain said said he co-coordinator Geoff Collins, defensive line coach Terrell Williams and secondary coach Kirk Callahan each will have input."As will me when I come in and mess with them," McElwain said. "There will be a lot of that, but (Shannon will) have a big hand in that. And part of that is just because he’s been a defensive coordinator.

"I’m a believer in that, guys who have done those kind of things.”

This dude said Charlie Strong, a coach that beat Florida in the Sugar Bowl / beat Baylor and Oklahoma last year, is worse than Golden lol

He beat Baylor because Baylor was playing with their 4th string QB who was a converted wide receiver. Once Art Briles finally realized you can't pass under those circumstances Baylor nearly overcame a 20 point deficit to win that game. Not an impressive win for UT in the least. He's 11-14 at Texas and would be 10-15 if he hadn't totally lucked out with the Baylor QB injury. He only got to the Sugar Bowl because of Terry Bridgewater and the coach he beat in the Sugar Bowl was Will Muschamp. Wow.

Until Charlie Strong can at least get his record at UT over .500 I'll view him as worse than Golden.

He became the 21st head football coach at the University of Louisville on December 9, 2009. In a telephone interview that day with ESPN.com columnist Pat Forde, former Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy, himself African-American, said of Strong, "When they see what he can do, you're probably going to have a lot of people disappointed they didn't hire him sooner."

This quote from Dungy has proven to be true. Why not just give Strong his props?

People have listed far bigger failures. I swear, some of you people just like to hear yourselves cry.
Golden is the worst coach of all time.

Agreed. Yes I think that Golden sucked. With that being said some of the posters on this board are a bit silly acting as if he's the worst coach ever. Pretty much every program has had a coach every bit as bad as Golden in just the last 20 years. And plenty have had a coach even worse than him.

In fact I'd say that Ohio State is the only program I can think of off the top of my head that hasn't had a coach every bit as bad as Golden at some point in the last 20 years. And that's only if you decide to not count Luke Fickell's single year as an emergency HC.

Charlie Weiss was pretty terrible. Lane Kiffin sucked ballzack with a TON of talent. Whoever just got fired from Iowa State. Every Colorado coach since 1995. Brady Hoke was super incompetent.

Give James Franklin about 1 more year before you're able to seriously discuss him in this thread. That clown and his buzzwords and phony ra-ra nonsense is just Golden with a little more skin color and slightly more energy.

There is no way you can argue that Al is better than Strong. Dude has accomplished more at UT than Al ever did and Strong's tenure has been putrid. You discredit his victory against Baylor but didn't they demolish UNC in the bowl? And dude beat OU last year. There is no way you can defend Al anymore.

No one can ever prove how RS burnt bridges. Because some Dade county coaches were upset he didn't recruit their players? That has happened since Erickson. Every Coach feels they have stud. I mean RS still comes down and recruits south Florida heavily. I actually think Al burnt more bridges when you see the amount studs that left. He actually had kids turn him down for Arkansas and even FIU. Not considering how he didn't prioritize Cooper, attempted to pressure Kirkland, and lossed out on all the top 2014 backs and the stud USCe linebacker. That being said, Al still isn't the worst p5 coach. Mike Riles doesn't have a stellar record and Colorado coaches struggle.

Maybe not worse than Golden but I agree that there's not a lot to suggest Strong is any better. Golden actually had a winning record. I'm not sure how much credit you can give for beating a team with all the QB injuries that Baylor had, no matter how good Baylor was when they had a healthy QB. Strong deserves credit for beating OU but that's it. He also got shut out vs Iowa State. Sure Golden got shut out vs Clemson but not friggin 3-9 Iowa State. Or even the 9-4 KSU team Strong got shut out by in 2014.
