Why do we refuse to play with any kind of tempo?

We have more talent than Oregon. Specifically their offensive line is crap... funny that.

But you said more plays equals more points, and Oregon is your best example. Why doesn't Oregon score more points by running more plays?

I’m guessing you never played a sport.

@TaylorWalls misunderstanding football tactics

@CanesSkins26 you can face palm or watch the game. In fact, I’ll give you a quick example. On our first drive after the first down to Pringle we go outside zone on first down for five yards. Beck immediately signals formation and they go no huddle.

Not only did I play a sport, I have over 400 wins in a sport. And execution is infinitely more important than "MOAR PLAYS".
Tell me any sport where a less talented team is trying to upset a more talented team and they say, geez let’s speed things up so our opponent has more opportunities to beat us.

And whoever said execution doesn’t matter? I know simple facts that if im successful 35% of the time in a game that means I do a whole lot better if I get 15 chances as opposed to 12. Not only are the odds on my side but my talent advantage eventually wins out. It always does.

But keep thinking Mario is on to something with his slow plodding style of play.

I have to go here first, since it is so stupid. I posted, and the other guy confirmed, that we are right there with the best teams in the country in how often we run plays. His one example, Oregon, is also the one team that has struggled to score in the last month. So if we are slow and plodding, so are Ohio State and Indiana.

We lost both games because of unacceptable mistakes on offense. The goal should be to fix the mistakes, not run everything even faster so we can make more mistakes.

Give me Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate at WR and their defense and I’ll run a pro style I formation system and win. Indiana runs a strong RPO system and has a QB that can keep defenses honest by running. Neither team needs to play with tempo.

We run an air raid system that would be better suited going more 4 wide spread sets and using space and tempo to exploit lesser teams. But we make it harder than it needs to be. It’s been a constant in Mario’s career and a reason he’s never gotten to the CFP and sadly won’t this year as well.

So they don't need tempo since they have more talent. But less talented teams want a slower game, therefore we need to speed it up against them.

Read that out loud.

OP is correct. Dawson is adjusting but it isn’t enough to make a playoff run if we make it in. We need tempo, for 70% of the game or more. If you disagree you are simply incorrect and should sit this one out.

We're slower than the top teams, that's what the data says.

Only IU that struggled with a terrible Wisconsin team was slower, and they're not over the course of the season.

We're the slowest, we're not right there.

What’s often overlooked, and I get Dawson doesn’t run a traditional system, but tempo is part of an air raid system. He runs a hybrid of it but without the tempo which I think is wrong.

We ran 78 plays against SMU. We lost because of two JV mistakes by receivers.

Way to use OT to mislead, 73 plays in regulation, 37:22 TOP(!) = 31 seconds per play. This would be bottom 10 nationally.

SMU ran 64 in regulation in just 22:18 Time of Possession = 21 seconds per play. This would be top 10 nationally.

They get 3 plays on Offense for every 2 of ours in the same time, enough to squeeze out a victory with a bit of luck over superior plodding talent.

Let's try to be a bit less of a smooth brain with the numbers please.

Two plays would have allowed us to escape with a W.
But we should have won that game by at least two scores, so more than just two plays were left out there. Many more.

I’m in favor of tempo not to run more plays, but that allows the players to just play instead of getting set, look at me, give a fake snap call and boom, false start. Those are self inflicted wounds that tempo would eliminate.

We did a much better job of calling plays and formations that fit our personnel yesterday. Just wished the coaches could have had this realization a month ago. We play SMU and Louisville with similar frequency of formations and playcalls we had yesterday, we would be ranked #2 still.
