Why did Richt hire Manny Diaz?

Trust in Richt... Pruitt was already attached at UGA... I think if Richt wanted him he would have come.

Papa Shaq! Haven't seen you post in a while. How are summer workouts going for your son? Is it a different regime than early spring?
Going good..he said they are still working hard Gus hasn't let up...he is liking the small and fast pace of summer school...the new guys are adjusting fine...but he is extremely glad for being an EE....He has grown an half inch...a legit 6'2... Will be home tomorrow to walk across the HS Grad Stage...some of excitement is gone..since he already has a semester of college under his belt.. but will formally end that Chapter

I'm not sold on Diaz either. I watched the Texas/BYU game where a one-legged quarterback named Tayson Hill ran for 200 yards against a Texas defense with one good leg.

Before halftime, I saw Mack Brown and Diaz really get into each other.

We'll see. Supposedly he was held back at Texas.

We're watching.

Same problem texas has we havehad, there not rexruiting as well as peoplethink regardless of ranking. If we get studs from sfla Diaz will field a elite d, if we let people leave den he will suck

The fact that Diaz's system requires the DL to get their feet across the line of scrimmage is definitely an upgrade over the previous staph infection.

That said, there are issues of concern. The first being spot dropping the linebackers, especially when he's dialing up those vaunted zone blitzes. The main issue here is asking the three underneath defenders to cover grass as oppose to matching and carrying the vertical seam route. We witnessed No D's defense on numerous occasions get absolutely torn to pieces using the exact same concept. Although I'm not a fan of this method I do understand the simplistic approach in term of teaching it.

The second issue relates to the coverage behind the zone blitz. No pattern matching with the corners. It's basically your typical three deep coverage of yesteryear. Meaning the corners stay over the top and deep as the deepest receiver. Again, I'm not a fan of this, but the coaching method is very simple.

The third is gap control upfront. Diaz allows his DLmen some freedom to attack space as oppose to maintaining gap control. As it relates to getting lit up via the running game, I think this is the primary reason. You'll often see two defenders in the same gap, and the ball carrier running to pure daylight. That's problematic to say the least.

In general, I'm curious to see if Diaz has evolved as a DC, and just how much influence coach Kool has on the overall scheme.

ALL EYEZ on MANNY

He hired Diaz because his first choice Dave Aranda went to LSU instead of Miami.. we offered 1.3 million for him..but LSU offered more....

Really dont matter as long as saban is at bama hes going to get the better players which means miles wont be there tolong. Aslong as saban is at bama lsu will taste second place all the time based on recruiting, and since saban got to bama lsu roster slighty dipped and its enough to damage lsu because bama targets r lsu targets. Same with us fsu takes the cherries and they win while we struggle, until that changes they will continue to win. It looks like theMR can go head to head with saban and hopefully go head to head with jimbo for guys they really reallywant.

**** what he did at Texas tbh....They didn't have players drafted at all more than 2 times in the past 5 years or so.... Hard to judge on his tenure in his last season there... Instead I will take note of the defense he fielded in the best conference while having arguably the worst talent on defense in his division.... Which was pretty good when you consider that...

Let's just trot him out and see how it works.

It don't work - then we have something to say.

At a minimum, he has to be four times better than D'Onofrio.

I get the feeling that Diaz may call a majority of the defensive plays - but he is going to be spending more time on the DB's while Kool is handling the D-Line and possibly calling some of the defensive plays.

That feeling based on anything more than wishful thinking rooted in our collective respect for Kuligowski's resume?

This hire scares the **** out of me. I don't like it at all, and I have a feeling he will prove very quickly to be the worst coach on the staff.

Diaz is the Lb coach and dont think he has ever coached dbs. Diaz is the dc and will call all the plays. Where in the **** are you getting this **** from?

I'm just sayin Kool will run the dline for sure and will have an influence on the defensive play calling as far as calling blitzes etc. do you not agree? (More than your avg D-line coach). Diaz seems to be pushing the DBs early on. Maybe out of necessity.

I think our defense will look worlds better this year but it may take a couple of years to field an elite defense due to lack of cbs. Agree that Coach Kool will have a huge impact, but don't see him calling plays though. This will be Mannys baby, good or bad. I think he will do fine, like others have said, Texas` talent was way down and that was years ago. People can learn and improve. Time will tell.

A good DL can cover up a lot of flaws in a defense, or expose them, which is what we've seen with Miami for years. Of all the hires, Kool was the home run. Kids will see a defense that attacks and the DT's that have been going to FSU, Clemson, and everywhere else BUT Miami, will start to come. From what I read, there was a clash with the DB coach at Texas, who refused to go along with the scheme Diaz wanted. It'd be different if he had no success anywhere, but he has. It's just been inconsistent. He can always dial back the blitzes, and call a more conventional defense if things get ugly.

Very questionable hire. Hopefully, Richt won't be stubborn if Diaz fails. Richt is a loyal guy, and he held onto Willie Martinez way past his expiration date as DC at UGA.

Agreed and agreed. Hopefully it works out with Diaz.

First, this is difficult to understand.

Second, are you saying that he needs X# of draft picks to coach a quality defense?

Fellow Fans,

I thought it was reported early on with Diaz that he might (will) run a four tiered defensive call scheme. What I mean by that is:

1) as DC, Diaz sets overarching defensive strategy for the given opponent;

2) during the game, DL defensive calls (by those specific coaches) are made separate from the DB;

3) during the game, DB defensive calls (by those specific coaches) are made separate from the DL; and

4) during the game, Diaz as DC ensures the separate DL and DB calls are working together overall to disrupt and stop the opponent's offense in support of the Hurricane's overall win the game strategy.

Am I making sense? Did i actually read that ir dream that?

Thoughts???

Just saying that last Texas season was an abberation IMO, the lack of talent only at Texas lately only confirms that notion

I don't think he was CMR's first choice. He could flourish here in his home town but if he doesn't he will be replaced.
