Where is the Gators hype coming from?

I’m struggling to see the vision here. DJ Lagway is a legitimate talent, but they’ve added nobody and lost a lot.

The only blue-chip transfer they added (J. Michael Sturdivant) is a fifth-year player with a career high of 755 yards in 2022. They lost four blue-chip transfers up front (Pyburn, Searcy, Collins, Robinson) and another blue-chip corner transfer (Jackson). They also lost 7 players to the draft.

What is the argument they’ll be good?
There isn't one.

They did better at the end of the year than they were expected with a tough schedule. Add fairy dust. Possible national champs next year.
That’s the main reason…the way they ended the season knowing Lagway would have experience under his belt for next season…and allegedly playing behind a solid OL.

Last year, their hype came from their building. Their staff swore Lagway was Superman. I guarantee you, their staff are the ones convincing local media and the Andy Staples of sports media, they are unstoppable.

Lagway is pure potential. Could he be great? Absolutely, but he struggled mightily no matter what they try to tell you when he was forced into action last year. We will see if he is even throwing in the fall before we can evaluate them anyway
My daddy always told me “ potential means you ain’t done nothin’ yet “…and I don’t know how what this kid did last year with a GOOD arm coming into a year with a throwing arm that supposedly needs surgery is giving people hope that he is going to be some kind of program savior.

But I guess they will be able to protect him with that #4 OL …😜….long enough to allow him to drop back and throw an out or a screen pass cause unless all this shoulder problem is BS that’s all he will be able to throw….

D$ mentioned it….but one key area where Florida is hurting is DL depth. They lost a lot via the portal and maxed out eligibility/draft. Jackson and Sapp are good players, but they don’t have any depth to support them

I think Lagway is legit. I think Dallas Wilson is gonna a ******* NFL starter.

That being said, as a team bc Lagway is gonna be inconsistent, they will be inconsistent. They're gonna beat some SEC team they shouldn't, win some they should, and lose at three they shouldnt. 7-5

/I dont think they're gonna stop the run and pass block well enough to be worth a ****

Well that's easy... It's called they're one of the 4 most marketable teams in the SEC...

They won their last four games in which the defense surrendered 16,17,11 and 8 points. That would be a reason for hype this season if almost their entire starting defense hadn’t graduated or transferred out.

They’ve got all this “positive momentum” yet they’re losing defenders to the transfer portal. Something definitely smells funny in Gainesville and it’s not just the usual smell of human fecal matter that permeates the city.

They’re not going to be able to win games 24-17 this year. They’re going to need Lagway to have a Cam Ward type of year to carry the offense (which doesn’t have any skill position talent) . Not to mention Lagway apparently has some lingering injuries that should have resulted in off season surgery but he opted against it.

My prediction is the wheels fall off mid season and Lagway makes a business decision not to play injured. They finish 4-8 and Billy gets canned right before DJ enters the transfer portal.

They won 2 homes games against solid teams, then beat a severly depleted Tulane team in bowl game. That is where all the hype is coming from.

I think they will be 2-2 after the first month.

I don't think they are better than Miami or LSU on a neutral field much less having to go on road against those teams.

My opinion on lagway is that he's this years nico iamaleava. Last year the vols anointed him as a heisman trophy winner because he beat up on utc and NC state. I feel like gators are doing the same because he showed he isn't gram ******* mertz. Hope im right

It’s all down to Lagway really. Again though, while the flashes are there, his body of work last year wasn’t all that impressive. 2021 TVD blows him out of the water, and Lagway’s stats were nearly identical to 2008 Jacory Harris (I’ve done posts comparing stats on both).

The arm talent is there, but he’s incredibly inconsistent. Like TVD, now that teams have film on him, I anticipate some regression. Also, like @DMoney noted, they lost a ton of production. I’m genuinely baffled where people are getting the idea that they’re built well on the lines. They’ve got a few guys on the DL, but little depth. On the OL, they sucked last year.

The reason they get hype is because Billy pulled a Miami 21’. Like our team then, we started the season abysmally, found a QB with upside, and beat some ranked teams to end the season. Unlike Florida, our athletic people had made the decision in October 21’ to ****can Manny and go after Mario. Florida chickened out and made the financially easier decision, short term, and basically mortgaged the SwAmP for the 26’ class, hence their very small portal class an d abysmal 27’ class.

They’re a 6-8 win team. Like every year, they’ll beat some team they should lose to (probably Rocky Flop). But when push comes to shove they’ll lose like they did last year to better teams. Billy is, still, a terrible gameday coach. Mario put on a clinic against him, to give you an idea of how bad he is. Also, their Ole Miss and LSU wins were solid, but those teams were overrated to begin with. It’s also worth something that they struggled against a completely depleted Tulane team.
