Having a losing season may ultimately be the greater good as it gets Mario here. But as a fan, I still cling to the hope we win the Coastal, maybe even the ACCC, and that Manny goes on to hire an Aranda-level DC during the off season and becomes a legendary head coach.
Here are the minimum changes he needs to make to have any chance of a future at Miami:
The Low Hanging Fruit:
* Get the ball out sooner, no more slow developing RPOs or checkdowns. More slants, timing routes and pre-snap movement so guys are in gear and running downhill when King takes the snap
* More multiple sets on offense. We're way too predictable
* CBs playing aggressive press to add another body in the box
* DTs and DEs having gap integrity responsibility on more snaps. It's fine to stunt and crash down, but sometimes lining up and punishing the guy across from you works, certainly it frees up the LBs.
* Play the freshman now.
-- Move Carter and Chase Smith to start at LB, with Cave coming in when a MLB is needed. Flagg and Jennings should never see another meaningful snap. Steed is a good substitute.
-- Have Gil and James Williams split reps at Striker
-- Have Kinchens taking more and more of Hall's reps
-- C Brown and Knighton need to split reps with Cam, whoever has the hot hand gets the most reps.
-- Use the freshmen WRs in 4/5-WR sets and actually target them on certain package plays
-- Arroyo splits reps with Mallory. He's already the better blocker, and looks like he'll fight for the ball more, too
The hard fixes:
* Do whatever it takes to improve tackling
* Do whatever it takes to improve special teams coverage units
* WRs need to practice blocking because they're horrific
* Get the OL to work as a group. Most of the breakdowns are mental not physical. Gaynor gets roughed up sometimes. But usually it's just bad coordination leaving a man unblocked.
If Manny survives to the offseason, hire a DC, replace Patke, take a very hard look at Justice.
