What year is Mario seriously on the hot seat?

Objectively speaking…

+He’s fixed the OL, LB, RB, and WR if he can close the ‘24 and ‘25 classes as is.
+The Edge defenders are top shelf and most are young and will only improve.
+They have a good amount of bodies at Safety
+The defensive scheme is flexible and fits this roster and recruiting base like a glove.

- Too many projects in the QB room. ‘24 is his 3rd recruiting class and they are all projects. That’s bad news.
- Too many slow DB’s. At some point, you’ll need athletes out there. When you start playing for conference titles and playoff spots, a certain level of athleticism is needed at the position that is not being recruited.
- DT is full of young bodies not ready to compete. This will be a problem in 2024. A lack of depth there will torpedo the season next year.

I’m confident that if the scheme stays as is, you won’t be able to attract a QB in the portal.

For DT, Leonard Taylor is playing like a mad man and is really helping his stock for the draft. It’ll also help (if the scheme remains the same) with DT recruiting in the portal.

The philosophy at DB is somewhat perplexing for me. I don’t get it, but it’ll keep going apparently.

So that’s my saying that by 2024, the two positions that Miami will be lacking in is QB and CB.

That, my friends, is another 8-4 or 7-5 season.

Thinking out loud, combining that with the mistakes Cristobal makes during game day…the ceiling here is 9-3 or 8-4.

Everyone talking about Norvell, I guess…

But the Norvell wasn’t getting paid but half of what Mario is initially and had the grace of Covid for his Y1. He wasn’t FSU’s golden child and didn’t have insane NIL support his first year or 2 either. They shouldn’t be graded on same curve IMO.

A guy I think would do well here with our talent is Mike Gundy. Yes he's probably a terrible cultural fit but paired with Mario's recruiting prowess in my opinion would make a formidable program.

I’m close with the family of a former OC there.
Not that I don’t like the guy, but don’t underestimate the bad cultural fit.
I’ll leave it at that.

Can you expand here a bit?

Is it across multiple OC’s? And is this based on player buy-in.

Why do their paychecks matter? It's not like Mario making what he makes gives him less resources than Norvell or another coach gets because more of the money is allocated to the coach's pockets. I completely get what you're saying but IMO a coach is a coach. If you pay him $8M, if you pay him $5M, his job is to win. If some other aspect of the program was lacking because we're allocating more money to Mario personally, then I think that becomes a much more valid argument, but I don't think that's the case.

Norvell also inherited a program that had won a national championship 7 years prior, and was in the playoffs 6 years prior. Obviously Jimbo torched that place on his way out, and Taggart was a clueless boob, but it's not like he was resurrecting a dormant program. Miami hasn't been good for 20 years. IMO the curve is the same...these are traditionally proud programs in the same conference and state who compete for the same kids. Win or GTFO. Same as Billy in Gainesville, or any other coach at any of these schools.

One thing I will say though is it looked like FSU was getting better in the 2nd half of 2021. They were a laughingstock in 2020, and then started 2021 0-4, and we all were in heaven. But they won some games down the stretch of 2021 (including getting Manny fired), and looked to have some momentum into 2022. We are going the opposite way, or at least just sputtering. We looked great early, we should've beat GT, we got beat by UNC, we were all excited about beating Clemson (as we should've been), and then the last 2 weeks were just offensive duds, so here we are again. Still have 3 games left to play that will tell a lot about this story, but yeah finishing the year on a 5 game run of beating a terrible UVA team in OT and then losing 4 in a row kills every ounce of goodness the first part of the season built. And then some.

I’ve said many times comparing one program to another is like comparing apples and oranges. There may be a few similarities but there are also countless variables that make each situation completely different from another.

Nope not them. The fanbase he has lossed since Middle Tennesse last year, Georgia Tech this year, and now the TVD fiasco this season on top of his caveman offensive identity totally neutering Shannon Dawson.

But I appreciate you bringing that group up because that only increases the % of the fanbase that thinks the guy was a terrible hire given the resources now being put into the building program

Jesus. Can we ever let things play out without this kind of gibberish?

This is like asking back in 1997 when Butch Davis would be on the hot seat, after the 1-2 start as banners flew over the Orange Bowl on September 27th before the West Virginia loss with all the champs-to-chumps nonsense that wasn't his fault.

This program has sucked for 20 years and fans are whining in year two about buying out Miami's third coach over a five-year span and sixth head coach in 17 years.

Let's talk buyout in 2-3 years, not halfway through year two.

If Tyler Van Dyke was merely playing decent instead of awful, Miami is 8-1 right now—and if he was playing good, this is a 9-0 team and a top five match-up in Tallahassee this weekend.

Some of you really can't let things play out and see that a broken quarterback is literally 90% of the entire problem right now?

Rhett Lashlee? Seriously? A 7-2 team that beats up on nobodies, Lashlee is really going to come to Coral Gables and win recruiting battles against Saban, Smart, Norvell, Napier, Kelly, etc.? Stop it....

The problem is that we have now seen enough of him, confirming previous fears that he will have to extremely out talent anyone else to reach the mountaintop because he’s clearly not going to get better as an actual endgame coach at this point. He literally never learns concepts, that even some of the dumbest posters on the site understand, so even if he builds the program amazingly and gets great talent, we have to either get lucky or have a class like one where there are five first round draft picks from it in order to beat somebody in a theoretical national championship game if we even get to one

I’d start inquiring Year 4. A lot can happen between now and then, but in terms of worst-case scenario, it would take something catastrophic like 4-8 or 3-9 to get the board to consider firing him. Probably gets Golden-esque 4 years, look hard at year 5.

Dang it. 5 years is no long. I’ll be approaching 70. I once had I great canes team but that was 20 years ago. In our short lives a great Canes team might not happen again for me and like aged cane fans. What a shame. For those of us from the old OB in the mists of team those memories have faded and we are left with a dysfunctional **** sandwich.

Maybe it's not fair to generalize based on one OC's experience.
I'll just say Gundy is very comfortable with the Stillwater lifestyle and, in my opinion, wouldn't be a good fit in South Florida.
