What Would You Like To See Improve

Feel like a byatch even saying what I want to see improve...considering how far things have come in such a short period of time.

Three changes I'd welcome:

1. Swap roles with Jaquan and Jamal on early downs/run situations: Others have mentioned it, Jamal is slow. Still a far cry from the days of AH and KR but he is a devastating hitter. Why not put him in the box with the savages and let him eat? Similar to the way the Cardinals use Deone Buchanan.

2. Improved run blocking: We have run very well thus far but I think it's in spite of what has been spotty and inconsistent blocking. too many times I see Walton or Yearby forced to avoid a would be tackler at or before the LOS.
3. More Gerald Willis: 'nuff said. Give me a heavy dose of Willis and Norton.

OL. Punt returns needs to improve. Maybe force more turnovers. But at the same time, we are still playing so vanilla, it's difficult to tell what really needs to improve.

O-LINE needs to be able to get a better push on short yardage downs. Even with them outweighing APP. States front by almost 50lbs per man we could not get a push to pick up a third and one.

It's been a long time since its been fun watching the defense play. It's been even longer to see all this positive energy around the program.
We head into the bye 3-0, getting healthy, and begin entering ACC play.

Although we're 3-0 and have looked much, much better than before, we can improve in some areas. One thing I noticed the last couple of weeks against FAU and App Store is that sometimes we sacrifice gap integrity for all out pressure, and we've been gashed for long TD runs (although one was called back). I personally would like to see a slight bit more gap integrity and a reduction of off side penalties (on both sides).

What have you gents, and ladies, noticed that you would like to see improve after the bye?

Nope. Gap integrity as the cost of aggressive violence is the golden brick road. Meet me at the QB and play run along the way is our best plan. Let the big dogs hunt without a collar. Notice on the first long td run, Corn ran the guy down and took him out of the game. THat is Cane defense. DO not fear the big play but rather bring fear to the other team for their welfare.

In this order
Penalties
OL
LB play in play action/passing. Too many open TE and plays across the middle.

There haven't been a ton of returnable punts, but I agree. It's not just Berrios, but the blocking.

The only thing "controllable" to improve for the GT tilt is penalties.

The Canes ACC regular season starts at GT and they have to get O and D penalties to ZERO (as unrealistic as that may be) as quickly as possible.

As for depth, that is outside what the Canes can control and is just a function of healing and time. Some will be ready by GT, others will (might) take longer.

Punt returns: we don't have a viable alternative. When we had stars as return men, there were other stars backing them up, that's not the case right now. Brx isn't amazing, but he picks up yards and hasn't fumbled. For now that's plenty.

Kayaa: it's not that he couldn't improve, but people make it sound like he's prone to INTs and missing open receivers. First 2 games weren't his best, but I think app shows you that his head is in the game and he can do the job. That pick was stupid, but everybody makes mistakes. That's not some feel good ****, it's the truth. Every QB throws picks and Kayaa throws fewer than most. Let's stop making assumptions based on 2 games and look at his career, no reason to worry about him as yet.

Gap integrity: in an ideal world we'd see more AND a ton of TFL. For now I'll gladly take an active defense getting TFL and giving up a few big plays. I'm sure we haven't forgotten that our previous scheme got few TFL and still gave up the big plays. As for that app run in particular, we didn't look good there. That said, without the hold maybe that's a 10 yard run and nobody thinks anything of it.

Special teams. Coverage and such. Also who is the long snapper, we usually are good to go here but seems that this years snapper takes awhile to get to punter, that can only set you up for a blocked kick against more talented teams.

OL and safeties. Jenkins and Carter will be tested in the coming weeks. They better play smarter. Not sure why Jenkins shoots his mouth off as much as he does. Richt sat him after running his mouth on the Rewine PI down the sideline in the 1st half. If he makes play and wants to tell opponents about it, I'm fine with that, but make a play first. Last one he made was against UF 2yrs ago.

Go Canes!

My guy, I feel you...but I want you to keep in mind that we've played against lesser opponents. Meeting at the QB may not always be there. Corn tracking down a RB may not always be feasible. I love the pressure we're applying, however, we have to play with some discipline as well, which is why Diaz gets a little hot w the players. I love that. But I feel what ur saying; I'm just saying the integrity can't continued to be sacrificed or we're going to be caught butt naked against other teams with better athletes.
