What Would You Like To See Improve

I'm "anxious" "excited" to see us play some comp that has someone on the team that can complete a forward pass. Want to see how the coverage holds up on those times the pressure does not make it.

You may have to wait a while. Most of the opposing Qbs on our schedule have looked pretty bad at times throwing the ball. I can't wait to see what Diaz has in store for them.

Everyone wants to be a **** critic; but don't have the eyes to critique.

STFU with these dumb *** ASSesments

Oh, I'm sorry, I participated in a message board discussion and gave an opinion. How idiotic of me!

Here, I'll make you feel better, Miami has nothing to worry about. We are perfectly perfect. Happy now?

Stop being childish. I dont care about the thread. It's a good one. But if you make an assessment, do your diligence and research.

There are a lot of people just saying anything and are not taking into account the full picture.

For a line facing more than they could block they did darn good

What research is needed dip****??? Watch the fugging game. Outside of Waltons long run (which was 80% him), the OL was stoned majority of the game. Pass pro was good, run game was horrible.

Don't knock sense into him. He is embarrassing himself and I'm loving it.

It's been a long time since its been fun watching the defense play. It's been even longer to see all this positive energy around the program.
We head into the bye 3-0, getting healthy, and begin entering ACC play.

Although we're 3-0 and have looked much, much better than before, we can improve in some areas. One thing I noticed the last couple of weeks against FAU and App Store is that sometimes we sacrifice gap integrity for all out pressure, and we've been gashed for long TD runs (although one was called back). I personally would like to see a slight bit more gap integrity and a reduction of off side penalties (on both sides).

What have you gents, and ladies, noticed that you would like to see improve after the bye?

Nope. Gap integrity as the cost of aggressive violence is the golden brick road. Meet me at the QB and play run along the way is our best plan. Let the big dogs hunt without a collar. Notice on the first long td run, Corn ran the guy down and took him out of the game. THat is Cane defense. DO not fear the big play but rather bring fear to the other team for their welfare.

My guy, I feel you...but I want you to keep in mind that we've played against lesser opponents. Meeting at the QB may not always be there. Corn tracking down a RB may not always be feasible. I love the pressure we're applying, however, we have to play with some discipline as well, which is why Diaz gets a little hot w the players. I love that. But I feel what ur saying; I'm just saying the integrity can't continued to be sacrificed or we're going to be caught butt naked against other teams with better athletes.

That was always a issue with even our great teams. For now, we have been so slow footed because all that crap I think we need to cut the kids loose and let fun be had. Maybe we give up a few big plays, but I long TD is not a damaging as a bone crunching soul crushing 15 play 75 yrd drive that eats the clock. Plus the defensive big plays make huge impacts. After Al, roll the dice and roll them hard. Bring pain and maybe those big plays will not be happening late in game.

Its amazing how dumb you guys are.

Its an oxyomoron to say the oline was stoned when they didnt give up 1 sack.

If app state sends 1 or 2 more guys than we can block then wtf are we supposed to do?

use imaginary lineman?

when app sold out to stop the run and bubble screens we made them pay with the passing game where the o-line was excellent.

The fact that i even have to explain this should be embarrassing to you.

But umm ye, what research is needed, eh?

how about knowing wtf you're talking about before you type. idiot.

I'm looking for DL and blitzers to get their hands up when they're not gonna get to the QB in time. Deflect and knock down passes so opposing offenses can't set up screens off our blitz. There's been a bit too much hero ball with dudes going for the QB hit after the pass has gotten off.

I'd like to see everything improve. We're nowhere near a finished product in any area.

But we're clearly headed in the right direction with proper coaching and more high-quality players headed our way in future classes....

The O line has to improve. Got flat out dominated on most rushing attempts. Not acceptable.

We need more production from our return game.

I want to see the offensive line improve steadily as the season progresses especially playing well against good Defenses.

I want to see the secondary start turning those batted passes into INTs and those INTs into Tds

Another is special teams.... When was the last time we had a big kick off or punt return for a td(other than last yr at duke). Hester or roscoe? I know it's happened to us a lot... I want us to finally do that to a team

OFFENSIVE LINE

The pass protection was very good against App State.

The run blocking was god awful.

This right here. Outside of Walton's 80 yards scamper we managed a mere 84 yards on 30 carries I believe. That is flat out atrocious and unacceptable against a physically outmatched opponent like App Store. I'm actually surprised no one has mentioned his before. It is true that the OL was very good in pass protection but against a stout P5 DL.......As of right now this OL is average. That's not a knock on our guys just my observation.
Edit update....I just re watched the game and App Store was loading the box and selling out to stop the run. I would still like to see more toughness and physicality from this line going forward but I'm confident we will see that.

To be fair I have noticed significant improvement from last year and this unit will IMO steadily improve over the course of the season. What really lowers their ceiling however is the lack of a LT. The group needs an infusion of elite talent at the Tackle position in a bad way.

As far as the team in general and what I think needs improvement, I think that quality depth is certainly an issue but it's not something that can be addressed during the season. We need to build depth at OL, WR, LB, CB and S but that is fairly obvious to most of us. Other than the OL needing to keep improving, I also see potential issues in the secondary. To this point what I have observed is a group that collectively lacks quality depth and elite talent but is very well coached and looks to be in great condition. It's so refreshing to see what quality coaching can do for a unit that had a plethora of question marks entering Spring. Guys like Ryan Mayes and Michael Jackson have stepped up their play and look to be solid contributors and with good coaching they could become good solid players. I can also see that they have been the beneficiaries of a dominating front. I will be very interested to see how we hold up against a legit passing attack.

I think Manny Diaz has done a truly excellent job so far and having the sort of 3 game "preseason" we have had has been crucial. As has been mentioned before, I would like to see us maintain gap integrity as opposed to sacrificing it a bit in order to create more chaos. We have an immensely talented front four and we should be able to lean on them most of the time without having to constantly blitz but what the **** do I know anyway lol. It has also been pointed out that there has been a huge hole off tackle from time to time that a good RB will will make us pay for. I certainly believe that these issues are obvious to the coaching staff and they will do their best to fine tune things.

I'm a huge fan of Brad Kaaya but it seems obvious to me that he is still not 100% comfortable in Richt's offense. This is something that I think was completely overlooked by the fan base after the new staff was hired. I think we all just assumed that Kaaya + Richt would immediately yield video game numbers. We never stopped to think that there would be a learning curve involved. This is another reason why our little preseason has been so enormously beneficial. It has given Kaaya and Richt time to adjust to each other and for Kaaya to work the kinks out in real games. The good news is that in watching Kaaya the last 3 games it seems to me that he is almost to the point where he is comfortable and has full command of the offense. He will get better in this offense every week and when he finally gets it, this offense will be a total bytch for defenses to deal with.

All things considered I am very pleased with how we have played, where we are at and where we are going. I haven't been able to say that in a very long time. So this is what it feels like to have an intelligent, competent staff. I had almost forgotten. The future is bright indeed! Go Canes!e

First off, we don't have the depth to have great return guys. We need Corn too badly to risk him and nobody else has shown the ability as yet. Second, while helpful and real fun to watch, kick/punt returns aren't all that important beyond field possition. If your kick returner can get you decent possition, then he's done his job. Getting a TD out of it is just gravey, and not worth risking your best CB. Third, how many kicks have we received? 7 maybe 8? The defense is robbing us of kick return opportunities, and I love them for it. Kick/punt returns will improve in the coming years, but for now we just don't have the ability.

People critical of the OL are ridiculous. The OL did a good job and has played well this year. App St loaded the box with 8 and 9 guys the entire game. No OL in the country could run block against that.

Uh, did you forget about Stacy Coley?

I remember him taking one back against Pitt. So did Benjamin, Lamar Miller, Duke, and probably more

Some of this is less of what I'd like to see improve and moreso our weaknesses, but:

1. KO return coverage--our problem here is a lack of linebackers IMO. We have too many small guys (corners especially) on this unit and better teams will gash us if we can't get touchbacks routinely.

2. Pressure with 4. We actually haven't been as good with this as some might think. We have brought major heat thus far against teams that could not hurt us throwing, but we won't always have that luxury.

3. Feast or famine D. This is not a weakness as much as what we are, but there are a lot of plays that will be major if one guy does not make a tackle. A healthy Dalvin Cook for instance will probably hurt us with big plays.

4. Play action reactions. Not a strength of our backers. The flats will probably hurt us badly against good teams.

5. Short yardage.

Kaaya I'm not all that worried about. He is a known. We have a tendency to expect too much of our best players. If the line protects him he will be fine. We'll miss him when he's gone, much like we underrated Dorsey late in his career and haven't had anyone equivalent since until Kaaya.

I may have scrolled past it but I would like to see the DBs and LBs work on their catching ability. I didn't count but I would estimate around 5 opportunities for interceptions that just weren't taken advantage of. It's nothing as big as the OL issues right now but definitely has the ability to flip a game around or solidify a win.

Coley did not have a punt/kick return TD against Pitt. He had a kick return TD vs some FCS school (Savanah St??) and a punt return vs Duke.

And corn had a few punt returns last year. I believe it was 3, with 2 being called back. And 2 of those were in the same game. Also I seem to recall a kick return by corn (and pretty much everybody else) against dook.
