The pass protection was very good against App State.
The run blocking was god awful.
This right here. Outside of Walton's 80 yards scamper we managed a mere 84 yards on 30 carries I believe. That is flat out atrocious and unacceptable against a physically outmatched opponent like App Store. I'm actually surprised no one has mentioned his before. It is true that the OL was very good in pass protection but against a stout P5 DL.......As of right now this OL is average. That's not a knock on our guys just my observation.
Edit update....I just re watched the game and App Store was loading the box and selling out to stop the run. I would still like to see more toughness and physicality from this line going forward but I'm confident we will see that.
To be fair I have noticed significant improvement from last year and this unit will IMO steadily improve over the course of the season. What really lowers their ceiling however is the lack of a LT. The group needs an infusion of elite talent at the Tackle position in a bad way.
As far as the team in general and what I think needs improvement, I think that quality depth is certainly an issue but it's not something that can be addressed during the season. We need to build depth at OL, WR, LB, CB and S but that is fairly obvious to most of us. Other than the OL needing to keep improving, I also see potential issues in the secondary. To this point what I have observed is a group that collectively lacks quality depth and elite talent but is very well coached and looks to be in great condition. It's so refreshing to see what quality coaching can do for a unit that had a plethora of question marks entering Spring. Guys like Ryan Mayes and Michael Jackson have stepped up their play and look to be solid contributors and with good coaching they could become good solid players. I can also see that they have been the beneficiaries of a dominating front. I will be very interested to see how we hold up against a legit passing attack.
I think Manny Diaz has done a truly excellent job so far and having the sort of 3 game "preseason" we have had has been crucial. As has been mentioned before, I would like to see us maintain gap integrity as opposed to sacrificing it a bit in order to create more chaos. We have an immensely talented front four and we should be able to lean on them most of the time without having to constantly blitz but what the **** do I know anyway lol. It has also been pointed out that there has been a huge hole off tackle from time to time that a good RB will will make us pay for. I certainly believe that these issues are obvious to the coaching staff and they will do their best to fine tune things.
I'm a huge fan of Brad Kaaya but it seems obvious to me that he is still not 100% comfortable in Richt's offense. This is something that I think was completely overlooked by the fan base after the new staff was hired. I think we all just assumed that Kaaya + Richt would immediately yield video game numbers. We never stopped to think that there would be a learning curve involved. This is another reason why our little preseason has been so enormously beneficial. It has given Kaaya and Richt time to adjust to each other and for Kaaya to work the kinks out in real games. The good news is that in watching Kaaya the last 3 games it seems to me that he is almost to the point where he is comfortable and has full command of the offense. He will get better in this offense every week and when he finally gets it, this offense will be a total bytch for defenses to deal with.
All things considered I am very pleased with how we have played, where we are at and where we are going. I haven't been able to say that in a very long time. So this is what it feels like to have an intelligent, competent staff. I had almost forgotten. The future is bright indeed! Go Canes!e
