These guys were pretty highly recruited, yet are having the same issues… coachingIt doesn't matter what defense it is. Dudes can't tackle and just are not very good.

One where CBs aren't playing 17yds off the LOS...
"Well, we haven’t. We’re 68th in sacks and 15th in TFLs. Those numbers are way down from 2016-2018. We were 3rd in the country in TFLs in 2017 and #1 in 2018. We led the country in sacks in 2017. #9 in 2018."Manny’s defense is predicated on havoc. When you have a very disruptive defensive line, it can work well because it creates a lot of negative plays. That’s his whole scheme. Get you behind the chains a couple times in a drive and I can get a stop or a turnover. It’s not bend but don’t break, it’s more I’ll break you once and then hold. He believes that if you’re in 2nd and 13 or 3rd and 9 all day, he’ll win more often than not.
The problem this year is there are no difference makers on the DL, especially on the edges. All of us who talked season outlook all summer probably underestimated the impact the lack of edge pass rush would make. We all said “DE factory” and “if we can somewhat replace Phillips and Roche..”. Well, we haven’t. We’re 68th in sacks and 15th in TFLs. Those numbers are way down from 2016-2018. We were 3rd in the country in TFLs in 2017 and #1 in 2018. We led the country in sacks in 2017. #9 in 2018.
That’s the biggest difference for me. DL and safeties have to be great in this scheme. Nobody is even close to Quan on the back end, and we have no disruptive defensive linemen.

what were we in 2019 and 2020 with Phillips, GR and Roche?
honest question
Thanks for the info.4th in the country in TFLs in 2020 and 2019
4th in the country in sacks in 2019. 31st in 2020.
Numbers much worse this year of any since No D was here.
Look at the highlights for Armstrong. Two of the highlights are picks not made and they leave out Kinchens in the endzone.
Scheme. Play calls. Whatever. They didn’t make the plays.
The huge juggle catch TD should have been an INT. We just dropped it. Kinchens had a pick, if he catches it, it is likely a 100 yard pick 6 unless he gets caught from behind, Williams misses a pick early in the game by behind a tad late.
****!
Same thing against MSU, drops, fumbles, etc. had the plays, didn’t make them, changed the early complexion and momentum of the game.Yup. Been saying this. I’m done with Manny too like all of you are. At the end of the day, he’s the head of the snake and if the team isn’t performing, he goes. Just the way it is.
But it’s a cop out to blame every single bit of this on a coach. Like you said, first drive, ball hits Kam right in both hands in the endzone. He was “coached” to be there. He was recruited to have the athleticism to be there. Didn’t make the play. 7 points. Marcus Clarke later, perfect position to make a pick. Nothing wrong with the scheme there, was it? Nope, he’s right where he needs to be. Drop, touchdown on a circus catch. Week 1, ball goes directly thru Bolden’s hands in the endzone on the 2nd drive. Maybe changes the game a little? Who knows. But his coaching and the playcall put him into position to take points off the board. He didn’t do it. Coaches have to coach better, players have to play better. As usual, it’s not black and white.
Lack of Talent and alignment as wellTackling
This 100%…. Everyone praises nesta for shooting a gap and making a couple plays for tfls a game but what they don’t realize some of our biggest runs is when he specifically shoots the wrong way and gets washed completely leaving a massive hole.Zero gap integrity by our DL. They just run up the field & our LBs have 320 lb guards hitting them at full speed every play. In the rare instance our )
LBs have open field, they are too unathletic to even make a play. This scheme works against teams that we have more talent than, but this season the cupboard is so bare on D we are getting eaten alive.
Our CBs struggle to cover anyone, but that also might have to do with our lack of pass rush. At safety, Bubba Bolden is serviceable but lacks physicians. Gurvan Hall might be the worst UM safety I've ever seen. To add insult to injury, it seems like none of them can tackle.
You're just highlighting everyone else's point.Look at the highlights for Armstrong. Two of the highlights are picks not made and they leave out Kinchens in the endzone.

Spot onBad schemes put players in the wrong spots... players out of position take bad angles and look slow and outmatched.
Missed tackles is more than just "not wrapping up"; it is also a factor of body momentum in the wrong direction, i.e.; being out of position and forced to adjust to bad attack angles.
Certain schemes have no recovery time... when you are right, its gold. Else you are chump...
Plain & Simplescheme
If you watched Manny’s defenses at Texas and Miss State, it was the same nonsense. Ask Mack Brownscheme
It’s been exposed. Ifs a gimmick defense that’s ran its course.Paging Lance, Macho, Roman and any other X&Os folks
What defense should we be running with this personnel currently on the roster?
