What happens if Mario…

Mario is gonna cost at least his Oregon salary ($5.5m), plus his coaches like Mirabal (600k). That’s gonna add up to several million more than Richt and his staff. I don’t think Miami will bite that bullet.

Mario will make more than 5.5m this year with incentives - probably close to 7.

Several million more than Richt is something Miami can easily do. Don't let this "we have no money" theme get legs - we have the money...we may not have money for a $10m coach but we certainly have money for a new staff.

I think if they tabled the contract, along with contracts from other cheaper coaches, they will convince themselves the cheaper option is the smart, moneyball option, and that they are so wise for getting value. It’s not that I think they have no money, it’s that I think they are cheap.

There's no what if - I think that's pretty definite. No way he comes with James there.
Probably true.

But there are always ways to manage these types of relationships. Not that I have any confidence the Admin would or would be be willing to do it here. I just know there could be a way to manage this if they really wanted to....which I don't think they do.

I think the President and some on the BOT would pick BJ over any coach. If Nick Saban walked through the door and said he always wanted to coach Miami and would do it only for only a couple million, but remove Blake or the President, some on the AdMin or the BOT would probably still say no. I have no faith left.

Blake is out regardless. If what has been said is true, and Blake hired Diaz despite there being financial support for hiring Mario, than he will be canned the moment Diaz is done, if not sooner. That said, I wouldn't be shocked if Mario was hired, he got to have a legit say in who the AD is. While I don't agree with that philosophy(You shouldn't get to pick your own boss), I wouldn't be shocked if that happened.

His Oregon salary isn't 5.5 million. It's an average of 4.55 million under the new contract. At its peak, if he hits the incentives, he gets the option of an extra year on his contract that is worth 5 million (which in S Fl is equivalent to paying him about $4.4 million due to no state income tax). The bonus option year is typically going to be the highest salary, otherwise it makes no sense to include it.

If you mean Miami is going to have to pay him at least 5.5 m, it's possible. But consider what would have happened if Blake James master plan had worked out like he hoped and Diaz had been successful. Diaz is supposedly making around 3.5 million right now. If hypothetically he had won the ACC coastal this year, I think we all know he would have received a contract extension that would have bumped his salary up to probably around 4.5 million if not more through 2026 or 2027. So there would really only be a 1 million salary difference between the two coaches.

I believe Mario signed a 6yr 26mm contract. Definitely doable specially that acc teams get additional 10mm per year from acc tv deal

Wants the job later this year but doesn’t want Blake involved? @Cribby @TheOriginalCane ?

While the hypothetical is interesting, I think that if we are willing to pay over $10M in Manny/Mario buyouts, we would also see a Beta Blake firing if that is a really a dealbreaking point (and I think it would be to Mario).

We shall see...

The BOT needs to bite the bullet. Not sure where they are in the Julio decision process, and I'm sure it seems a bit tawdry to fire/hire multiple people at the same time (and as much as our football fans don't like Julio, there are ample NON-athletics reasons to fire him), but the AD/HC situation needs a rapid response. They can drag their heels on Julio, a few months faster/slower aren't going to make a difference.
