What do you all make of Pickett's fake slide?

If the NCAA doesn’t immediately outlaw this, the response will need to be that you hit a guy even if you think he is sliding. 15 yards is better than a touchdown. Injuries will be on the league.

One way to stop this is to adopt the NFL rule where you have to touch a guy for him to be down. It’s never made sense to me that a college guy can stumble with no one near him and be called down.

Much like Danny Vermin from Johnny Dangerously, this is the kind of thing that happens once. Once.

It reminds me of back in 06 when the NCAA changed the rule on kickoffs so the clock starts as soon as the ball is kicked. Then Wisconsin was playing Penn St, scored right before the half, and Bielema had all 10 coverage guys go offsides and swarm the returner. And then kept doing it to drain the clock.

I mean, good on Pickett for going full Belichick and exploiting the rule, but the NCAA will have to close the loophole

Clawson is a bit salty about it:

I think you play to the whistle, but I can see where penalties and injuries could result from if it became normal.
That’s funny. I didn’t see the play, but wondered the same thing. Like can’t you just keep faking that? Either it works or the QB gets hit and it’s a penalty.

He didn't break any rules so I am ok with it. However, if the rule is to protect the qb, you can't fake giving yourself up. It needs to be treated like a fair catch. You give the sign, the play is dead.

I compare it to the fake injuries/cramps to slow down the pace of the offense. Is it ok per the rules...yes. is it chicken shlt move.....yes

Not mad at him for pulling it since it’s within the current rules. I’ll be glad it happened if the talk about it leads to a rule change.

The idea that qbs can do this but the defense can be ejected for hitting him if he does slide is a joke. Defense has been getting ****ed on rule changes the past 15 years, give them a ******* break.

They need to make a rule that if ur fake slide ur automatically ruled down. Bc if they would’ve hit his *** on a slide it would’ve been targeting

To be honest., his 'fake' was lame. Defense pulled up too soon.

Faking a slide should still be illegal, or at least prevented by calling the QB down earlier in the motion, but Wake was weak AF IMO.

The refs may have also blown the call, and should have ruled Pickett down when he started to slide. Not sure when how rule defines ‘start of slide’. From some angles it may not have looked as it did on television. Were there any other angles shown on the broadcast? I’ve only seen the shot in the tweet. Was the play reviewable?

Personal foul and back that **** up. Same thing with acting like you’re going out of bounds. Defenses are already f’d , they need some kind of break

I still hate the way the targeting rule is implemented.

Also the full body weight rule.

And the fake injury TO rule.

You can’t play to the whistle with a QB. Claw son has a point. Defenders are taught to pull up with a scrambling QB who begins to slide. If a fake slide is permitted then so should hitting a Qb who slides. This isn’t hard.

They should change the rule. But with the current rules it was brilliant in a huge spot and kudos to him. Kenny P can play some ball, it’s been fun playing him the past few years. He’s a pro.

I would have sent a walk on headhunter to take one for the team and knock his head off at the very next offensive series... that would put an end to this nonsense.

I think some PAC 10 punt returner pulled that stunt on Pat Hill's Fresno State team in the nineties... Pat made him pay for the rest of the game inspite of penalties. .
This^^^^

Exactly what I would do. I’m old-school when it comes to **** like that. He knew what he was doing. He admitted to doing it on purpose.

I would’ve had my first and second stringer fake injuries in consecutive plays on the next series, and then sent in a walk-on with instructions to seek and destroy.

It’s just like in baseball. There are consequences for doing **** that you’re not supposed to do.
