What do you all make of Pickett's fake slide?

Smart, but it needs to be addressed. Puts the defense in a lose/lose situation. If they don't do something about it a QB's are going to start getting decapitated.

Clawson is a bit salty about it:

I think you play to the whistle, but I can see where penalties and injuries could result from if it became normal.
Not cool and he should be hot about it. It's just one more element of the game you add to the defense to slow them down and start analyzing should I hit him or should I pull up. Ncaa and NFL favor offense and write the rules to give them the upper hand.

Yeah, they have to outlaw that sort of thing. The slide is to protect the player. Once you start the motion, that’s it. You’re down
100% agree, you don't get to have your cake and eat it too. It's not fair to the defender. Usually these guys land awkwardly when trying to avoid a slider. Play should be reviewed and placed at that point.

They were comparing it to the Marino fake spike which I also did not like at the time but there is no rule against it so it was a smart play.
Apples and oranges.

The slide rule is there to prevent QB's from getting hurt. If players are going to use it as a form of deception to gain an upper hand on defenders, defenders in turn are going to continue the play, QBs will get hurt, and the rule will no longer have its intended result.

The fake spike was created just to stop time from coming off the clock. If the offense fakes a spike, it is their decision to forgo stopping the clock. No players have heightened risk of injury. If the Jets were fool enough to not keep their heads in the game, shame on them.

I’m torn on this; they need to treat it like the faint fair catch call. The slide is to protect the QB, so a QB going into a sliding motion alerts the defender to not take his head off in the open field.

However, since there’s no rule on it, I like the heezy fake. Clearly, they need to address this; it’s already hard on defenders to know how to play defense w/o getting flagged. They have to think so much which puts them at a disadvantage.

It needs to be looked at similar to a fair catch signal on a punt... refs need to call that because of the penalties involved in roughing the QB

Agreed, should be a 15 yard penalty. The only other option is to have the refs blow the whistle as soon as a slide gets started and that would be no good as I think you'd have to many early whistles blown.

I would have told my players if he does it again to take his head off.

I would have sent a walk on headhunter to take one for the team and knock his head off at the very next offensive series... that would put an end to this nonsense.

I think some PAC 10 punt returner pulled that stunt on Pat Hill's Fresno State team in the nineties... Pat made him pay for the rest of the game inspite of penalties. .

Yup. I thought that was bush league. I have seen dudes in baseball get their head targeted for much less.

Yeah they’re going to have to address this one. That can’t be allowed, defenses are already neutered in what they cannot do and they shouldn’t have to worry about trickery like this.
If I'm a college football player and I get a rule named after me, "The Pickett Rule", I'd be proud as ****. ngl.

Bush league… but a smart play by him. He exploited the rule. Good for him. Now change the **** rule. As a defensive coach, I’m mad as ****. The rules favor the offenses already. They don’t need any more advantages.
