We better have a Top 10 defensive backfield this year

Or the high-profile recruiting losses will really hurt.

247Sports recently released projected depth charts for Alabama, Florida and Georgia. All four of Bama’s projected starting DBs (Surtain, Jobe, Battle and Wright) were from South Florida. Three of Florida’s starters (Wilson, Elam and Davis) were from South Florida. Finally, two of Georgia’s starters (Tyrique and Campbell) were from South Florida, along with their top backup (Wilson).

There is plenty of talent in Miami’s defensive backfield. Eleven total four stars. But given what has left the region, we need Rumph and Banda to coach our guys to an elite level. 37th in yards per pass attempt is not good enough, especially considering our pass rush. Anything less than a Top 10 finish is a failure.

Agree, however, it should be noted that our pass rush from our interior DL was not that good last year. See what a dominant DT does to your secondary... like Willis. Rushing direct into a QB passing lane really makes a big disruption.

As simple as it sounds, an improvement on our offense will affect defensive recruiting for sure. Guys just wanna win in the end of the day. We can’t win if we can’t score points.

LMAO..Huge lol..idek what dude talking about..was gonna say troll but he been around since ‘13...we just have football dummies in our fanbase

yeah I’m definitely not a troll, try again. And I’m Laughing Out Loud hysterically that you think Gurvan and Ivey won’t be in the two deep.

So which is it? We have the talent we need and it isn’t about recruiting? Or we need to evaluate and recruit better?

We have 11 four stars at DB. Highly recruited players. Most schools would kill for those kind of numbers.

The OP was about the elite of the elite. The rarefied air. Because we had some high-profile recruiting losses in that demo, there is a lot of pressure on Rumph/Banda to put out a top product.

They did it in 2018 with a Top 5 pass defense across the board. Last year was a disappointment with some new players. The pressure is on for a strong performance this year.

He’s good but he’s not as good as he’s hyped up to be. Shut down is what jalen Ramsey was at FSU and he wasn’t that imo, he gave up over 100 yards vs uf, **** near 200 yards vs bama and was beat by lesser competition too at times. Like i said, giving up 600 plus yards 6 tds is not some mythical season. Don’t believe the hype, actually watch the tape. No one said blades was in the same tier, however just was putting things in perspective of who y’all hype a guy who gave up 6 tds 600 plus yards vs one who gave 0 tds and less than 250 yards on the season.
Come on now. Devonta Smith got him, but he was lockdown before and especially after that game. He is a certified stud.

I feel like with a now fast pace Offense, the Defensive stats are going to dip. Due to the fact they’ll be on the field a lot more, although (fingers crossed) won’t be defending a short field as often, like last season.

Lets hope our DL has a great season as we’re aspecting, or that back field is in for a really long season.
I don’t see them being in the field “a lot” more. Did you forget how inept our offense was last season? We almost never sustained drives and almost always lost the time of possession battle.

He was bad in a lot of games (UNC, CMU, Va Tech GTech, FIU & Duke).

I think a lot of people on board have simply overlooked his poor performances or they just forgot, but I rewatched every one of those games (I recorded them all on my DVR) & people really don't understand how often he was beat, there was just a lot of times the QB either didn't throw at him or made a bad throw, but I'm telling you, he was beat so much it was ridiculous.

The UNC game he was exposed by offenses, Phil Longo figured out all you have to do is make him run down the field & you'll beat him every time, they discovered that he gets ate up vs the Deep ball.

UVA put on a clinic vs him too, **** near every play they was throwing at him because he simply couldn't get his feet under him & was playing too wide out of his stance at the LOS, he gets beat off the first move by the WR on the line because his footwork is subpar & he doesn't stagger his feet, he lines up too square & he does what we call "Opening the gate" which is basically allowing the WR a free release, so as soon as the WR takes a step off the line he's already trailing.

Not trying to bash the kid or pile on, but I just think it's being undersold that CB is a issue due to lack of depth & the fact the CB2 has a long ways to go before he deserves blind fan confidence in his ability to hold down his side of the field.

It's why I've been screaming all offseason for a GT CB, but unfortunately it's gonna be one of those things that we just have to deal with all season. Because trust it, OC's are gonna attack TF out of Ivey's side of the field.

I'm sorry

Disappointment to whom? What were you expecting exactly after losing 3 starters to the nfl who had started for the last 2 years? That’s a lot of experience gone and it takes time yet still finished 18th in pass defense 37th yards per attempt

Still taking blades, didn’t give up a td pass all year allowed 18 receptions on over 40 passing attempts while giving up less than 240 yards. Just for context that Cb stingley who Most hyped up as begin some sensational never seen before freshman cb gave up over 650 yards 6 tds this season.
Fam..... stop it give me Stingley over every DB we have and have had the last 5 years lol not even close he’s playing premium players.... he’s only a freshman and already went up against what 4-5 1st round wrs

Premium players AND Non premium players were beating him too. Everybody gets beat, I’ve been saying that, Watch the games. I’m not saying he isn’t good but he’s being overhyped by too many

I don’t even know where to start with this nonsense. Good lord.

Stingley is gonna be a Top 10 pick at worst in 2 years. His floor is pick 10. This is complete diarrhea. We talking Al Blades vs Derek Stingley on this board now LMAO. I’m headed back to Earth, y’all got this thread from here.

Carter, Bolden, Hall, Blades, Ivey, Frierson, Couch, Smith, C. Williams...none of them had major experience heading into 2019. A case could be made for Carter since he did start a game or two but he'd been firmly behind Jaquan and Redwine for two full seasons and used sparingly in blitz packages.

The same cannot be said heading into 2020. We have Avantae and Harrell squeezing from the bottom. There can be no excuses.

Stingley would be a 2nd round pick today. He'll be a top-half 1st rounder when he comes out, barring injury. LOL @ the idea that any of our DBs is on his level.

I expect to see the most improvement on third down. In 2017, with a new secondary, we were 64th. In 2018, with everybody back, we jumped to 1st in the nation. Then in 2019, we fell back down to 53rd.

Third down performance will define the 2020 defense.

It’s nonsense in saying stingley gets beat? I dont Care who you are freshman or not giving up 624 yards on only 36 catches and 5 touchdowns allowed is not some mythical season. No need to just latch on some media hype, I watch the games, I’ve seen teams routinely attack him and go after him uf game comes to mind the first drive after half time with van Jefferson who was working him play after play .

And not sure what you were trying to insinuate but No one is saying blades is better than him let’s get the clear

Freshman all American is overhype ?
No, people saying ,”he’s the best in the last 5 years as a freshman “ etc when we have seen guys like jalen Ramsey, Denzel Ward and a host of others who DIDNT allow anywhere near 5 tds 624 yards on 36 receptions in a season.. that’s where it’s overhype imo
