We better have a Top 10 defensive backfield this year

No, people saying ,”he’s the best in the last 5 years as a freshman “ etc when we have seen guys like jalen Ramsey, Denzel Ward and a host of others who DIDNT allow anywhere near 5 tds 624 yards on 36 receptions in a season.. that’s where it’s overhype imo

Bruh u should stop while you’re not ahead. Ramsey was Freshman All American but didn’t have anywhere close to the season Stingley had considering he started every game and went up against maybe 5 or 6 1st round talents at WR. It’s also funny you mentioned Denzel Ward because I’m a huge fan of his but he doesn’t belong in this conversation due to the fact he only played 5 games as a Freshman in which he had 7 tackles and 0 Ints.

D money smoking the Payotee again..

Stars don’t mean ****. Iveys Hs film was mediocre and he was slow. Same can be said others as well. Amari Carter killed a few guys but can’t do much else.

The evaluation of prospects is pure trash. The defensive staff has zero clue what they are looking for.
that’s broad and not a well informed
Take

eye roll...No love for non-weighted 1984 style statistics.

Pitt throws for a ton of yards, they aren't scaring anyone...And also if you want to use those ancient statistics...GA faced 3 as good as UM's best, so what's your point?

You dudes can't play these little games w me...I pay bills with this **** and every post is well thought and backed by impirical evidence.

And for the 900th time Brock...I didn't make the SEC comparison in the first place.

Reading comprehension is key, I’m saying it’s an outlandish statement when people say,” as only a freshman he’s the best cb that we have seen in a long time” etc, and I’m saying regardless of classification that isn’t true. In ANY year, Ramsey didn’t give up that much yards or tds.

Also you just Throwing out 5 or 6 first round talents like its absolute lol. I see 2 for sure and then 1 more that’s maybe a fringe first round guy(Higgins) and also another day 2 pick in Collin Johnson

CollinJohnson likely a day 2 pick

devonta smith first round talent

Tee Higgins first/2nd round talent depending on how he tests.

ceedee lamb first round talent

We all agreed we need to be better. It seems like you were seemingly writing off those 2 as tho they were scrubs..talking about them like they were AJ highsmith jr and Nate dortch
Well I'm pretty dashed by both of them considering what I expected and what I ended up seeing on the field. Last year has me really hurt but I didn't intend to go so far as Highsmith and Dortch. I'll leave it at I hope somebody plays those positions way better than they were played last year.

I expect our pass D numbers to fall this year. If our O scores the way we all hope they will, other teams will be passing a lot more. I do expect our INTs to go way up, though. You can't look at rankings alone. If we are scoring 40 a game, teams will be passing, a lot.

I fully expect our D to get more sacks, and more turnovers. The chaos the D will bring playing with leads will be a wonderful thing to watch. Just don't be upset when we give up more passing yards than you'd like.
Completely agree mate. I too believe the defense will be capitalizing on more turnovers that last year as well as sacks and TFL. It will be by product of a finally healthy offensive scheme and production.

We don’t have a secondary talent wise that matches up well with most of the premier db producing programs(bama, LSU, Ohio state etc) however miamis db talent is ABSOLUTELY in that range after that though comfortably. Anywhere from top 8-15 or so in the Country in terms of overall db talent. I will confidently say Miami has a better db group talent wise than 2 programs who compete annually for the playoffs in Clemson and Oklahoma. Sh*t Clemson still be playing what looks like a bunch of walkons at safety

Those guys definitely aren’t scrubs yet but they also haven’t lived up to expectations to date either. Campbell got benched because he wasn’t playing well and hasn’t been nearly as impressive as people expected. That’s a fact. Jobe has been mostly a special teams player. That’s a fact. Those guys are still more talented than the guys starting at Miami. All of these things can be true and they can still be better than the Corners we have here. Nothing sour about that.
What expectations though?
Those teams have OTHER ELITE PROSPECTS competing for the same spots. I don't expect ANY kid to walk into a top-5 program in the SEC and light the world on fire right away.
That requires SO MUCH from a physical AND mental standpoint.
It's a bonus if a kid does that.

Campbell was a 5 star recruit who many thought was an even better prospect than Surtain.

Jobe was very highly touted too. Top 50-75ish kid. There’s a far cry between lighting the SEC on fire and being benched for a lower ranked guy in Campbell’s case. I think Jobe may have been a bit older than his class so he was advanced physically compared to his peers. The elite, bag getting SEC recruits we expect to come in and make an impact within the first two years, right? That’s not a crazy expectation at all. And you don’t have to be all-conference as a frosh or soph but those guys haven’t even been close to that yet. Still time left, though.

Or the high-profile recruiting losses will really hurt.

247Sports recently released projected depth charts for Alabama, Florida and Georgia. All four of Bama’s projected starting DBs (Surtain, Jobe, Battle and Wright) were from South Florida. Three of Florida’s starters (Wilson, Elam and Davis) were from South Florida. Finally, two of Georgia’s starters (Tyrique and Campbell) were from South Florida, along with their top backup (Wilson).

There is plenty of talent in Miami’s defensive backfield. Eleven total four stars. But given what has left the region, we need Rumph and Banda to coach our guys to an elite level. 37th in yards per pass attempt is not good enough, especially considering our pass rush. Anything less than a Top 10 finish is a failure.

Rumph needs to challenge Ivey & Blades as the older guys. Push them knowing Couch & Williams are capable. He needs to challenge them to make plays. Know down and distance, defense being called and this is the route I jump. Help them make plays that build confidence. It doesn’t take a lot of them, just one or two at the right time.

Go Canes!

I think Ivey will be OK, and far improved from last year. He had to add weight which he did, and get familiar with the physicality, which he didn't have to do at the high school level. Blades has always had great build and the frame as an athletic football player. His technique was never great, but his competitiveness to recover when beat, and ability to tackle (still needs to improve using his hands), made him ready sooner, and think with his confidence, size he put on, athleticism and improved technique hes going to bed very good.

Safety room is very good, and ideally we should see Hall and bolden the most. I think carter is best suited at the striker, or in box safety for next level, but Hall, Smith and Frierson need to improve in coverage. All the Canes safeties have proved that can come play in the box. Bolden the best in instincts and coverage, with Hall being the guy that can stick people & solid in coverage, but we need him to get more instinctual and look for more takeaways. Hall & Bolden might be the best pair in a long time.

Bolden and Blades are the only ones in the secondary that have proven anything. Even then, that sample is small. Ivey is a backup IMO. He doesn’t have that dog, isn’t fast, lacks cover skills, and has suspect recognition. Hall has flashed big hits but nothing we used to see 20-30 years ago. Hall is also very inconsistent in tackling and coverage. Carter is another guy who should be a backup. He looks out of place back there and lacks athleticism. I’m hoping Couch steps it up because he’s the most natural CB on the roster. Again, banking on Ivey sounds like a recipe for disaster. Hope I’m wrong but just don’t see it.

Even though the season will be cancelled:

DE Roche / Harvey
DT Nesta / Ford
DT Rousseau / Miller
DE Phillips / Blissett
LB McCloud / Joyner
LB Brooks / Huff
ST Frierson / Smith
CB Ivey / Couch
SS Bolden / Carter
FS Hall / A. Williams
CB Blades / C. Williams

That’s not a bad two deep on paper with the exception of not having a proven stud at lb or in the secondary.

Rousseau at DT and Ivey starting?????????

The way I see it Roche, Rousseau and Phillips are outta here after 2020 so let's maximize their snaps. And Rousseau caused havoc when he lined up inside. Ford, Silvera, Miller round out a stellar top 6. Outside of that top 6 there's nothing but freshmans.

As for Ivey starting ahead of Blades, Couch, Christian Williams...may the best man win!

Might as well include Silvera in the group of DL who are outta here after 2020. Of course, if there is no season then all will likely return in 2021 except perhaps Roche.

Hall is a tackling machine and a great safety blitzer, he was one of our most consistent defenders all season. He does get lost in coverage some but he was still young. Him and Bolden should do some things at safety.
