We better have a Top 10 defensive backfield this year

This is a make or break year for Coach Rumph. Ivey, Blades, Williams, and Couch are all guys he recruited and has been coaching for years, it's time to see the results or a change is needed because he can't really recruit. Anyway, hopefully Ivey steps up because he's long as **** and built like a stud but we need to see it on the field.

We had a Top 5 pass defense in 2018.

And finished with a disgusting 7-6 record.

And what does that stat even actually mean in terms of overall defensive efficacy?

Also, honestly, would you rather have our talent in the defensive backfield or Floridas talent or Alabama’s talent or Georgia’s talent?

This is the problem with statistics, Manny must’ve been looking at his 2018 statistics, seen all those high numbers on overall defense and pass defense, and thought he had it all figured out. Just get a decent offensive coordinator and we’re good to go. How did that work out in 2019?

Being a better team takes much more than that, there’s a ton of intangibles, but at the end of the day it starts with having as much talent as you can possibly stockpile. And we’re nowhere near that. Just look at our cornerback situation.

I reject the premise of threads like these. To me they are nonsensical. What we need to do is maximize the talent we have to consistently beat a weak coastal division, and get in the ACCCG consistently. and do better job of evaluating and recruiting. No, we can’t recruit like the bag SEC schools. But we can do a whole lot better job of recruiting and evaluating recruits. Let’s start there, and not worry about meaningless statistics.

we don’t need to be top five or top 10 in anything to roll through the coastal division

Or the high-profile recruiting losses will really hurt.

247Sports recently released projected depth charts for Alabama, Florida and Georgia. All four of Bama’s projected starting DBs (Surtain, Jobe, Battle and Wright) were from South Florida. Three of Florida’s starters (Wilson, Elam and Davis) were from South Florida. Finally, two of Georgia’s starters (Tyrique and Campbell) were from South Florida, along with their top backup (Wilson).

There is plenty of talent in Miami’s defensive backfield. Eleven total four stars. But given what has left the region, we need Rumph and Banda to coach our guys to an elite level. 37th in yards per pass attempt is not good enough, especially considering our pass rush. Anything less than a Top 10 finish is a failure.

Im not sure why people want to keep looking over the next man's fence, who cares about those guys on other teams, what were their secondaries ranked in yrds per pass attempt as well, put that up to. People still sweating non-Canes, lol, we got our guys, they got theirs, we straight over here. Coach rumph and banda have been doing work,if you worried about our secondary, you probably dont understand football. I could careless with who they have at db, what you need to be focusing on is who do we have on offense that can dust those guys and is this rhett lashlee guy legit and aggressive or does he only get aggressive against lesser opponents, that would be the smart comparison, our offense vs those defenses.

He had deflections in that game as well lol.

OK so let's give him the Thorpe?

I like him moving forward, I never didn't like him, back to his soph School tape which I thought was excellent, I'm just saying...I hope there's a next step, because while he did some good things this year, I don't think he's a star by any means, just 2nd or 3rd team all conf corner/late round pick type at this point.

Lol...About 18 dumb statements in a 5 line paragraph

We about to find out this season. Just get Ivey out of my sight. Also rating is no indication of elite I look at it as what schools were going full court press after a DB......like houses money etc. I don't think we have guys like that. Guys that got offered the world....maybe Hall
Just because you got offered the world doesn’t mean **** after you get on campus. Jobe and Campbell haven’t been worth half of what they got paid to go to KKKville.

Cracks me up every time some *** kissing slurper comes on here defending Rumph. There are 2 possible things going on here which not even Rumph's family can argue.

1) He's letting too many of the elite players at the position (including a couple he coached in high school) get away and thus not getting it done in recruiting

Or if you do the blind slurping "BRO, HE'S RECRUITED A BUNCH OF 4 STARS BRO" mantra....

2) Then he hasn't done a good enough job of coaching up and developing the 4 stars he HAS gotten.

Debate 1 or 2 until your heads turn blue....all I know is Rumph better be on the hot seat after this season if our DB's don't peform A LOT better this upcoming season. For better or worse, that depth chart at CB is RUMPH'S DEPTH CHART. He's been here long enough where he's directly responsible.

Defense gonna be exposed this year if the offense can put it together.

Rumph and Banda should be on the clock this season

Top 10 or failure is a bit ridiculous. Blades and Ivey are our starting CBs and the rest are either 2nd year players or Freshman. We're losing are starting LBs of 4 years and Bandy,Knowles and Finley. That's a lot of experience walking out the door and you expect an elite secondary despite that...

A couple people I’ve talked to on the inside think that Ivey has the highest upside and will ultimately be the best CB.

Obviously, it’s just their opinion, and they realize that Ivey had a very rough start. But I thought it was interesting.
Led the team in INTs last year.

NONE of those DB's have impressed at the college level, and tbh, you could make the argument a few have been disappointments (wouldn't call any busts). None of the 5 stars have lived up to that billing.

Bolden and Hall are better than any of the other Safety tandems listed there tbh. Our Cb's are suspect af, and Ivey -- who I was high on -- ain't gonna cut it.

Even then, the point is still well taken. I'd love to have EVERY SINGLE one of those db's on the roster. Right now.
Ivey was a freshman last year and still played well in stretches. Hes only going to get better.
