We are a real program again

Carson was excellent coming off injury and led the team to victory.

But a couple better timed/better thrown balls, and this thread is probably singing a happier tune in terms of Dawson play calling. Throwing behind Josh Moore comes to mind. Throwing it in the dirt on the Marion screen. Missing over the top to Jojo (maybe Marion, haven’t rewatched yet).

Again, **** of a game and he earned the W. Just saying, small things like that, in the weather conditions we had, compound things as a play caller.

Agree I’d like to be less vanilla, but a Brown slip here and a Lofton whiffed block there change how some of those runs look.

I thought our WRs struggled to get open versus the very elite ND DBs. Big play TDs were acts of God. Had some bad drops, too.

I thought Beck lacked some velo on some passes, too. But I say that watching the game from under the roof so I was nice n dry considering and maybe the ball sucked tonight.

Playcalling in the 4th quarter could have lost us the game. Not throwing on those third downs is wild to me. I guess Mesidor told Coach he got it, just run.

Things took a nosedive for the offense once they put their best CB on Toney.

In the 4th quarter it felt like the offense was focused on just trying to kill 2-3 min a drive then put and let the defense get a stop rather than try and go for the throat and secure the game. That’s not a good mentality and will bite us in the *** later this year.

Also, 0 excuse for taking a delay of game penalty to open the 2nd half. Awful

It’s a constant theme with Dawson though, always going into a shell while we have a comfortable lead. Every game outside of the Texas A&M game in 23, has the same results.. stalled offensive series, and it’s where we all shake our heads and ask why he does that. Yes, we had the #1 offense last year, but take Cam Ward out of the equation and what would it have been?? For what we have in Carson Beck, I would think he would let Beck do more than just hand it off, by the way our run game needs to be opened up, this running into a stacked box with condensed sets is irritating to watch. Especially, since we have the line we have. Don’t get me wrong, I am ecstatic we beat Notre Dame, they’re my most hated team followed by Florida and FSU, I just can’t stand those asshats. That said, this game should’ve been a comfortable win.

Agreed, Mario has built up the talent level to match top programs; especially OL, DL and provided us with 1st round type QBs

Now the question is, will his in game coaching get in the way again of what could a special season. Let’s see

We clearly were the better team, and ND is very good. Without Mario and staffs passiveness, and the refs wearing gold underwear we win this game by 2TDs easy

Gotta get the run game right/open it up more and clean up the in game coaching mistakes or conservative play calling. Outside of that, this team should compete with anyone
Mario will be Mario. He is too stubborn to change. I’ll take the W it was a big win. At the end the conservative play calling almost cost us. Even the TV guys were saying we were very vanilla. Handoff run between tackles.

I’ll have more detailed thoughts after the rewatch, but all that matters to me is that we are a real program again. We were a joke for 20 years. These types of games were not competitive. Teams like Alabama were playing a different sport.

Now, we can play big-boy football with any team in the country. Alabama is dead. The sport is open. And we are a real program again.

Even the club level was locked in last night..out there fighting ND fans and acting like “unintelligent thugs”

Gotta be a good sign.

While I agree with what you're saying in large part, it's important to remember the reason we play the game. It's about winning first and foremost. The way you win is important to fans and recruits. My issue has far more to do with the monotony of the game Dawson called. I don't mind running the ball. Just don't use the same God **** run plays in the same exact situations over and over again. Mix it up. On top of that, with the line we have nothing at all wrong with calling higher percentage passes so we can free up the box or atleast loosen up the run lanes. Defense i had an equal amount of issues with and it's the side of the ball I take far more personal. We're still not playing as a unit. No excuse for that first touchdown. That was entirely on the secondary falling asleep and just watching the play instead of playing assignment football until the down ends. That **** with Toure I don't even wanna remind myself about. We just gotta tighten up
That’s on Mario. He loves DUO. Double teams across the board and let the back sort it out. It’s not inside zone or RB dive it’s just DUO and a heavy dose of it ALL GAME LONG! I saw Dawson’s offense at Houston. It had inside and outside zone, power, counter, sweeps. I think he calls that because that’s what Mario wants. Mario’s gotta evolve. I think I saw outside zone once and a gap play inside once. Other than that DUO

I get it, we all wanted to dominate like we did in 2017. However, it was week 1, it was raining, and that ND team we just beat is pretty damm good. I’m not worried about the offense. The ceiling of this team is very high, and we’ll get better every week. The defense played excellent. They were gassed late in that game, but clutched up when it mattered the most. Shoutout our DBs, they played lights out. Nds wrs were a lot better than I expected. Reuben Bain is back

I agree

beck took some time to settle and the hope is that he'll only get better and he'll only play worse defenses

I do think it's fair to point out that the field was wet and there was a downpour the hour before kick off

It's not an issue to call a run behind the strength of our team on third and short. IT IS AN ISSUE TO CALL THE SAME EXACT PLAY EACH & EVERY TIME ON THIRD AND SHORT. Even the announcers are calling where it's going pre snap. What do you think a defense is thinking.
It was terrible the conservative play calling playing not to lose. That’s the caveman Mario.

If we take down fsu and the gaytors im with ya …long season

We looked big time in the trenches against a very good team there. The DL was a pleasent surprise. What stood out as well was Beck’s ability to be decisive and accurate on short and intermediate passes. He got the ball out quick. Toney is a star in the making.

We still had numerous gaffs in the secondary and need to clean that up. Also, CJ Carr was giving me flash backs of Krenzel from the fiasco bowl. We will need that cleaned up against FSU. Lastly, we paid a **** ton on money for our CBs but they weren’t really tested by Carr last night.

Yeah we really went into a shell offensively late but we just beat a top 10 team. Major major win for the program. We should be top 5 next week.

Did anyone notice if it was Lucas or OJ that was covering Greathouse most of the game? Whoever it was, is not getting enough credit. Complete lockdown

This has always been the point when people wanna say I'm just being a homer cause Mario and the university mean this much to me. It's never been reality. I call a spade a spade & say what I see. What I think. We kept them in that game and had to stress it directly because of play calling. After Reubens pick(which he should've scored himself on) to call the same exact run plays we've called all game and settle for a quick 3 is absurd. Even more absurd the last drive of the game after we've had snapping issues throughout the game, the muffed snap early in the game and a field goal kicker who wasn't good enough for fau... That's how you wanna call the drive and put the game on a unknowns leg... Again not an issue to run the ball. But Jesus do we have more than 3 run plays in our game plan.
You could be called a homer for deciding that things that have happened with different playcallers at Miami and with different playcallers at Oregon don't fall at the feet of the HC. When it gets tight you see tight formations and big bodies and running in between the guards. Now he had mobile QBs at Oregon so that gave the run game a variable that he has not had at Miami but the announcers can call it out just like anybody who has watched Mario and Mirabal at multiple spots.

Up 21-7. Over half the 3rd quarter gone and you have the ball back? After how the first drive went, absolutely bullying Notre Dame? He wants to do it again and he's gonna want to limit possessions. And you do that by running the ball on first down. If you pick up 5 yards? Great. You can run it on second down.

And even in the unlikely event that this was all Dawson's doing Mario doesn't get the excuse of being a passive onlooker. He's got a headset. **** Dawson is 10 feet away from him. He can change the course of playcalling if he wants to. He didn't.

We watch another issue in clock management happen that is wiped out of memory because of the catch by Daniels. Those issues are consistent no matter the playcaller. The playing not to lose is as well.

Really is our best roster in over 2 decades.
I said That about a week ago and it’s not only Mario’s Best roster here, but in my opinion, his best he’s ever had as a head coach. We won that game last night and it was pretty dominant aside for the fact that the refs were clearly helping Notre Dame the whole second half. But Canes won and that’s all that matters! 🙌

100% agree. All that chatter about Beck’s 24-3 record in the SEC in Miami can’t manage a first down after the opening second half touchdown draft. Not until the last minute field goal drive, which includes a 15-yard pass interference penalty on the Irish. Maybe Notre Dame adjusted and Dawson had no answer.

Nor is Miami signing top receivers out of high school unless we have a returning quarterback of note. Cam Ward was a gift from the football gods and I am so happy we have Carson Beck.

But if you’re an elite high school wide receiver or a top portal wide receiver this December your first and only question regarding Miami is going to be “who is the quarterback?”. There very well maybe be another worthy portal QB next year, but that can’t be the answer.

I am hoping Miami gets enough big leads in enough games to give Luke Nickel enough playing time and he proves he’s the real deal for 2026. I doubt this happens though because Emory will get those reps, handing off on more inside running.

Great win tonight. Beats losing.
Playing calling was meh but that 15 yard penalty would have been 6.
